live contact on qb's

Apr 14, 2014, 9:42 AM

if the coaches are going to allow live hits on the qb's during spring practice, which they did, then why not allow it during the spring game? if your theory is you don't want to take a chance of getting a qb injured then why start now in practice doing it? I heard boyd asked the question as a visitor in the tv booth, when did he face live hits during practice and he said never. injuries can happen anytime I know but I was just curious why the change about live contact. I guess it could have been because of the injury to Watson.

Isn't that a college-wide idea? Aren't all spring games

touch-contact only?

We had a QB battle...it was another way to evaluate them. Why not practice how you play, or should we have touch plays now to save the QBs from getting hurt before the next level?

Why does the NFL encourage live-contact pre-season games that don't mean anything?

Clemson

teams are split, so there's little continuity.

i don't think that makes for a good medium to go live with your qbs.

yes it probably is a college wide idea of most to not have your qb's get hit live in practice or spring games to prevent injuries and because how important your qb is to the team. but no there is no rule, as we saw that the coaches were doing it in practice. I just don't understand why they stopped doing it in the spring game. if you want to see how the qb reacts to live play to help with evaluations go live but have a quick whistle to stop any unnecessary pile ups and allow for scrambles. but if you are going to go live in practice, do it in the spring game. just my opinion.

we went live during practice so the QBs wouldn't take advantage of the no contact rule and sit worry free in the pocket. Morris wanted to see how they handled live bullets as far as a pass rush.

there are a lot of QBs who are good in 7 on 7 drills. the game changes when you have to worry about getting ear holed.

They need it live practices to create separation between them. Tajh was a known quantity and separated at the time already.

I thought the same thing as I watched the spring game. They wanted them to go live in some practices to get a better evaluation as to how each QB will handle the pressure. It could be too late to wait until week 1 to see how they will play live under pressure considering 2 out of our first 3 games are in crazy hostile environments! So why not go live and add a little bit of pressure to the spring game when you have a small crowd watching so the players might try to play a little harder and better than a normal practice?

Only logical reason I can see to answer that is that 1 of the 3 have already gotten hurt from live practice so we really couldn't risk dropping another especially since 1 of the remaining 2 tore his ACL last year in the spring game.

Another reason in my opinion (which doesn't count for much) is that unless Watson is just some freak of nature you have to believe the coaches are wanting to redshirt him (even FSU redshirted Winston) and let Stoudt and Kelly battle it out for the #1 job and maybe even use this season to flirt with a 2 QB system kind of like USC did with Shaw and Thompson. If this is the case then they couldn't risk 1 maybe even both of them getting hurt this past Saturday.
