NOTES and OBSERVATIONS ON UGA

Aug 21, 2014, 9:49 PM

While watching the Spring Game and a few practice clips of UGA I have noticed a few differences in the offensive scheme. However let me express what I've noticed in general.

DEFENSIVE: The strength of their defense is not their line, but rather their LINE BACKERS. Not sure how well they will fare against a speedy CLEMSON RB who runs the Off Tackle. We shall see. They are good and jamming the middle though so a run between the tackles is not preferred unless we are going to use a power back to gain a yard or maybe two. Their secondary is a complete cluster f*ck. They have no clue what they are doing. However, they are speedy and very physical. The good news is that they won't know who the intended receiver is without Sammy and Byrant out there. I'm sure they will bring extra coverage to Williams and Peake, but they don't even expect Kitt, Priester, or Scott to be immediate contributions to Chad Morris and his team.

OFFENSE: While our Clemson offense is built around the QB their entire offense seems to revolve around the running game. One thing I noticed about Gurley was that he appears to have lost some weight this season. He is a lot faster this year. The way they used him in the spring game is a lot different from the way they used him last year. He was catching a lot of bubble screens on the outside and doing it pretty well. They are doing this to increase tempo and compensate for weakness on the offensive line. They do not have the tackles to run up the middle against a Clemson front 4. They will try to spread us this this season by attacking the edges and then going deep. Look out for NICK CHUBB... He doesn't have a whole lot of skill but he is very fast and has tons of power. He is just a very raw running back. With improvements on his footwork and agility he could be really dangerous. In fact more dangerous than Gurshall. Their wide outs look very capable of doing great things but will not fare well against the likes of Alexander and crew. "JUST MY OPINION" However, they are good enough to keep us honest. Their WR do not concern me nearly as much as their TE named ROME. He will need to be pressed hard to slow him down. Hutson Mason is easily rattled in the pocket so they don't want him having possession long. If we get to him early and often then he will have to run Gurshall up the middle and they will get stuffed in the box like last season. He will then make mistakes out of frustration and desperation. May see a few INTs in this game from him if our DE can get to him a few good times.

Special Teams: They are an atrocity. This is the result of having an arrogant coach that doesn't prepare his field goal units because they don't think they will need them to win a game. I can see many blunders this season. I believe they have Connely returning kicks and he has some good acceleration and speed to him. Not a big guy, but very tall and fast. Sort of reminds me of Aaron Kelly.

My recommendations:

OFFENSE: In my opinion we will need to run the ball very well to gain the respect of out ground attack. I do not recommend running up the middle between the tackles due to having great Line backers to run up against. I recommend the off tackle and lots of speed. Our TE game will be very crucial in winning this game. A few fake hand offs up the middle and a couple of quick passes underneath can keep drives alive. If we can get them to press the middle then we may have a shot a few deep routes, Corner Post and Screen passes. By far we will need to have a balanced attack with the ball being spread around to all skill players. This will keep them on their heals.

Defense: I would recommend a PRESS COVER TWO for the primary platform of play. This keeps their offense honest and if we play assignment football then I do not see us having any deep threats. However, if we cannot contain the edges then it will be a long night for Clemson in between the hedges. Pressure the QB like there is no tomorrow. He will then have no choice but to put the weight of the game on the running back and run him up the middle. This will not win the game for UGA. If we can contain the edges and pressure the QB then we will win easily.

MY PREDICTION: This will be a low scoring game if Stoudt doesn't find a mismatch early in their secondary. Our offensive line will need to protect against their line backers coming hard on blitzes. Should Stoudt execute his check downs and take what is open then we may have a blowout against UGA in their own stadium. If he gets pressured due to missed assignments on offensive line then it will be a disaster in Athens. It will not hurt for our defense to get a few pic 6 or scoop and score. So creating turnovers with our defense will be key to giving us the advantage for a win.

DISCLAIMER: This is strictly just an opinion. I'm sure that there are many factors about both Clemson and UGA that I am not aware of, but based on what I do know this is my opinion.

Not a bad assessment in the least. Some very astute observations in there.

To help you out a little, Conley won't be returning kicks. It will be Reggie Davis and Isaiah Mackenzie. The kicker is very dangerous but punts were scary bad last year.

One other thing, Sony Michel is running ahead of Chubb on the depth chart. He's not as powerful, but he is faster.

Rome is running behind another TE currently I believe. Their FG kicker is deadly accurate. Bobo always incorporates a passing game into the mix with a heavy dose of running to be expected of course. They have two to three big rangy WR's that can be dangerous on deep balls and in EZ. Pruitt blitz's from LB spots often in his defenses. UGA was good against the run last year in spite of their other woes on D. Stout will have to make some plays in the air. Peake and Williams need good games, they create mismatches vs. UGA's secondary, have to take advantage of that.

Yep. Got a bum foot.

His backup has made real strides this offseason. He looked good with the ball in his hands last year from the FB position, and it looks like he's going to fill in as a H back type this year.

You tigers should remember Hicks.....absolute stud and Cu doesn't have a lber that can stay with him. He'll play FB,TE and H-Back.

Anytime UGA has an injured player the guy stepping in, is an absolute stud... Better than the starter was.

Like this Hicks player taking over for your 5* TE Rome, he is a stud, and can play almost any position in the field...

Sure sure, just like the walk-ons on your defense.

Hicks will be dealt with according. When you say that we don't have a LB that can hang with him, what do you imply with that statement? Speed, athleticism, or what? I will have you know that before season's end Clemson will have the following:

#1 Defensive FRONT 7 in the nation

TOP 5 Defensive Secondary

We may even be ranked the #1 Defense in the Nation before dust settles this season. So I wouldn't dare to say that a LB can't keep up with Hicks when Beasley may be seeing time at LB this season. Also, we have a very physical secondary this season. For a little further warning watch out for Boulware, Steward, and many more that can keep up with HICKS. If any UGA player runs up the middle on a Clemson front 7 then I would say to expect that run to get stuffed for no gain or even a loss.

your defense could not deal with him last season.....

Hicks-

3 rushes for 38 yards and 1 TD 1 reception for 38 yards

Destroyed Anthony and Shuey with his lead block on Gurley's 75 yarder.........

Re: NOTES and OBSERVATIONS ON UGA

Aug 22, 2014, 4:57 AM

The strength of the line will be greatly improved from a year ago. We are hearing much better things out of them since they all shed about 15-20 pounds in the off-season of excess weight. Grantham had them playing fat as part of his "style", which sucked. The linebackers should be better than last year as well, and more balanced. Our All-american in Ramik Wilson is being pushed for playing time, and was actually moved to second string this week. Jordan Jenkins has been coming into his own and actually has been wreaking havoc this off-season during practices/scrimmages. The secondary, though inexperienced, will be much better. Under Grantham, they had no clue what to do at any point in the season. They will play better football because there will be no more questioning position and responsibilities as the ball is snapped. However, unproven unit and it could get very dicey back there.

Offensively, Mason will do okay, but without our fastest two receivers on the field it will be a lot harder for him to find a receiver open for long gains. Mitchell and Justin Scott Wesley provided us with tremendous amounts of speed and athleticism, and unfortunately for us, both will be out this game. This will force us to rely on Bennett(great possession receiver), Conley (very quick and superb route runner with very good hands, and Tibbs who has been coming along quite well. Tibbs will be our weaker point and it will allow for your DBs to focus more on Conley and Bennett. The play of our TE/HB will be important, because of the receivers being dinged up a bit. At running back, I do respect that Chubb will be a great back in our system eventually. However, Gurley is unquestionably better. If you get to see the two standing side by side in the game on the sideline, then just take a look and you will understand. Gurley has incredible core strength, but his legs are like tree trunks. He is a much more all-around back, and a down hill runner. He will also be a threat in the receiving game as well, and has very very good hands for a running back.

Special teams: OMG.. please let us be better. They have addressed this issue a lot during the off-season by turning it over to more qualified hands. Also, rather than scrubs on the field, everyone is participating in special teams some way or another. This was not the case in recent years are Richt for some reason chose to ignore it. This off-season he could not ignore it, because the outrage was tremendous. Every game we lost could have been won if a catastrophic special teams blunder did not occur. Most teams expect maybe two of those per season, and we had nearly 8 of them. The only game that did not fall under this category was the Clemson game. Our special teams blunder that resulted in missed points was the 3 point fail at a very short field goal which would have only tied the game. Isaiah McKenzie is probably going to be the main return man from what I hear. Reggie Davis may get some opportunities here, but he also had a few blunders last year. Ultimately between the two, this will be decided by whomever provides the most protection to the football during the return.

I agree whole heartedly with your prediction section giving credit to both teams strengths and weaknesses, and what they would need to do to pull out the win.

Aug 22, 2014, 8:36 AM

Nice post OP and for the most part, you make a lot of great points.

The strength of our defense is ILB and OLB. However, our DL was much improved against the run last year and I think they are only going to be better this year under Rocker. We have very quality depth across the entire front 7... A legit two deep across all positions. Considering CU has some depth/youth issues at OL to start the season, I really have high expectations for our DL and Floyd, Jenkins, and Lo. Carter.

The secondary is an unknown for sure (cluster F is overstating it quite a bit IMO). We return 3 starters from the end of 2013 (Moore, Mauger, and Swann) and right now the only 2 of those that will def start are Swann and Moore. Top JUCO CB, Fenteng, will likely start opposite Swann, while there have been quite a few names tossed around at the other safety spot and 2-3 names at NB.

The one thing I will say about our secondary is we have a lot of depth (some with solid, little, and zero CFB experience).. but Pruitt has been rotating the group around like musical chairs seeing who is best fit at CB vs S vs NB in his scheme. I love the cross-training and seeing who is best fit for this scheme. I doubt they will reach their full potential in game 1, but I think there will be an improvement from what you guys say last year when we returned 2 starters on defense. But like you said, a lot of fast and physical talent...

Re: exactly-- if it had been a 1 score game, UGA wouldn't have

Aug 22, 2014, 8:48 AM

On OFFENSE...

I do think we will run more up-tempo this year as Mason seems to excel at it (see his comeback vs. GT). You are correct on Gurley, back down to 225 and in his words, best shape he has been in. We have started passing to RBs alot more starting last year (where Gurley had almost 500 yards receiving). Marshall is said to be back to 100% for a few months now, but after him, I think you will see Douglas and Michel but who knows. Chubb has had praise as well. Many good options at RB for the season.

Loss of Mitchell and JSW for this game does hurt. However, Conley and Bennett have been our consistent targets in the passing game for 3 seasons now. Add in Davis (who has similar speed to MM/JSW), Tibbs, Towns (both young but coming on) and I think we have a handful of guys that can be relied on our in offense. As you know, a lot of times it is not talent but can a WR be counted on by the QB to run the correct routes... it sounds like a few guys are now on the same page with Mason (many came up in the system on scout team with Mason) so we might not see much drop off.

Regarding TE, hard to say what Rome will do... his toe has been bothering him all camp but he's still been playing through it (recovering from surgery). Will be interesting to see what Hicks does...but the name to watch out for is Jeb Blazevich...apparently he's a great route running with elite hands (5* TE freshman)...sounds like he will play from game 1. Dont expect us to run much to his side, but will be running routes when in the game.

8 days now...cant wait. Here's to a great game.

Re: NOTES and OBSERVATIONS ON UGA

Aug 22, 2014, 4:54 PM [ in reply to Re: NOTES and OBSERVATIONS ON UGA ]

nicely done......i might add that freshman Lo Carter (5-star) has apparently earned some PT. He supposedly had a great camp @ OLB. None of the Tnetters want to acknowledge that we started Connor Friggin Norman at Safety in 2013. Of course you can catch him in action in just about everyone of Boyds passing tds. Norman earned a scholly after walking on. He was really like a 4-5 stringer.

WRs- you didn't mention Kenneth Towns 145 yards in the last scrimmage....he's making waves as well. The Hback (Hicks)will be a different look for Venables.....we didn't use it last year so he's got no film. If TG can stay healthy the sky is the limit for this offense. Word out of camp is no one wants to tackle Gurley...lol! He's 225 and in the best shape of his career.

McKenzie- the Human Joystick. Now we know why....has been electric in camp. Still he's a freshman. I'll be all puckered up watching him field punts....not so much on KOs. Conley has been getting some looks on KO as well.

Can't wait for this one.....its been a long year. time to right a wrong! this time next week I'll be sitting at general beauregard's drinking a cold one. Go Dawgs!

Looked like a good analysis, but when I didn't see Humphries in the list of receivers that UGA should focus on, then I just kind of quit reading any further. Sorry - but Adam Humphries arguably has the absolute best hands wearing ORANGE, and is MONEY on 3rd-and-long. I hope UGA misses that too.

Aug 22, 2014, 8:54 AM

I couldn't agree more... He is the unsung hero. A secret weapon of sorts. OPSEC is key because loose lips sink ships. I like the fact that nobody covers the short white kid in the game and they have to get burned for 2 scores before they even realize who Adam is... He is very consistent and dependable in 3 down situations underneath. Sneaky guy with great hands and good footwork. I actually tailgate beside his parents in Lot 14... He comes from a rare breed these days. I absolutely love his family. They are genuine southern folks. Also, I have Adam Humphries sign my Clemson ball cap last season. He and D ROD come and tailgate after the games and we all kind of chat. I really enjoy it. D ROD Will be another one that will surprise many.

Re: ADAM HUMPHRIES

Stout will use Humph as his early release early and often, will have the most catches on the team based upon Cole's style of play, lot of underneath stuff will be sent his way. Those 6-7 yard passes add up. Cole will use the TE's more as well, he will not send it downfield as often as Taj did. More ball control, move the chains type stuff. Probably less turnovers as well. Just less explosive plays.
