Even more disappointed in the Braves ownership after...

Mar 18, 2022, 8:36 PM

...reading this. I wrongfully assumed they at least made a hard run at retaining Freddie. But, based on his comments, the lack of communication was abhorrent. Very sad to hear that.

It’s a business. As fans some things just make no sense.

...and wanted a huge long-term contract. The seeming lack of respect shown for the unquestioned leader of the team coming off a world title is strange though. Freddie is a great gentleman and his restrained comments are kind of telling.

If you look at the Braves offer

Mar 19, 2022, 8:57 AM

they offered the same money as the Dodgers in June with 1 less year. He could have accepted 5 years and 162 million in June. It was his choice. He got 1 more year and no more money. I’m more disappointed in Freeman for turning down an offer that most could only dream about. If he wanted to stay, he could have.

or, he could have listened to Chipper

Mar 19, 2022, 12:10 PM

Chipper Jones told him Braves would call his Bluff if he tried to squeeze more money out of them.

Chipper with the truth. It's all business. Atlanta offered what they could considering the entire team and it wasn't enough for Freddie. Really, no hard feeling should be had by anyone. Next page......

Freeman's a HOF stud

Mar 18, 2022, 9:04 PM

He will be 33 this September.

Albert Pujols left St. Louis in 2012 at 31 years old. He was never the same player for the Angels.

I wish Freeman the very best, but world class hand-eye coordination is a tricky proposition for any MLB player in their early 30's. No guarantees. Braves are playing it financially conservative.

Liberty Media

Mar 18, 2022, 9:14 PM

I'm angry that they didn't work hard to keep Freddie. And I've questioned a lot of their moves in the past (like when they traded Jason Heyward).

BUT...

They got us a championship last year. And that forgives a lot of 'sins.'

I'm still bummed about Freddie and I know every Braves fan just hates that he's now playing for the Dodgers. But flashback to the 1990 Dale Murphy trade. People were ticked off. It turns out it was Dale asking for a trade. But, at the time, I just don't think Bobby Cox or Ted Turner fought very hard to keep the man that was at the time a fan favorite.

It's business. It's baseball. And sometimes, it sucks.

I loved those final years where it would be Murphy, evans, and I think one other guy who all basically just swung for the fences, and we’re going occasionally successful at it.

Jason Heyward turned out to be an overpaid disappointment. Gold glove outfielder but floundered at the plate.

Sounds like to keep the majority of their A+ young talent

Mar 18, 2022, 9:57 PM

They had to get rid of the A+ veteran. They aren’t losing much on the field or at the plate with Olson. This was a good move for the organization. They offered Freeman a good deal. He was worth more, he knew it, the Braves knew it, but also knew to keep Freeman, they’d have to eventually give up some of those arms. The Braves want to avoid having those bullpen games that every other team has now. Basically giving up a game to keep starters fresh. The Braves beat the Dodgers this year because Scherzer was forced to pitch too much against the Giants and he was garbage in the NLCS

Mar 18, 2022, 10:42 PM

In short term, he said the Braves needed a response and he ignored it.

He chased the money and Braves fans won’t be saddened much by his replacement.

Sounds as though it could have been a miss by Freddie's reps if he really wanted to stay.

Re: Even more disappointed in the Braves ownership after...

The right move was made. I believe Freddie wanted to stay, I believe Freddie’s wife is more into the L.A. lifestyle and judging by some things she put out there, she wanted L.A. L. A. Will regret that money come year 5 and 6 . However they have a lot more money to spend than the Braves.

Olson was signed long term for what is thought throughout baseball was a heck of a deal. Also his agent is also Chipper Jones agent and Chipper relayed to the Braves he could be had for a hometown discount.

They have Acura locked up cheap, Ozzie locked up dirt cheap, and Olson at a bargain. Ozuna comes back and supposedly looks in great shape. The bullpen just got another solid arm from the Astros who also signed with the Braves on a hometown discount. The Braves have run into a lot of luck with hometown guys wanting to come back to Atlanta who are willing to take less money to do so. This team is stacked.

News flash - Freeman is from So. Cal and his family still lives there. I believe he and the Braves could have done more to make it happen in ATL.

6 years for $162M or 5 years for $130M is $1M a year difference. I'm sure the Braves would have beat that annual difference if Freeman would have compromised on the 6 years.

Re: Even more disappointed in the Braves ownership after...

Mar 19, 2022, 9:14 AM

Nope - had nothing to do with it. I listened to an interview with Chipper and he made it clear Freddie wanted to be a Brave for life and Chipper told him be careful in free agency and make sure your agent is working for you, not you working for your agent. The Braves CLEARLY communicated they weren’t going past 5 years and they had a deadline they needed to know from Freddie by. His agent thought he had leverage to get a 6th year and wait them out. Alex Anthopolous was true to his word so they had to move on. This fell squarely on Freddie’s agent and all Freddie has to soothe his feelings is $30M or so. Everybody involved will be A OK except the fans who don’t have any representation.

There are several articles out quoting Chipper saying that he told Freddie that this is what was going to happen and that he was playing a dangerous game. I hate that Freddie is gone but he is just as culpable as the Braves are. It’s sad that this is how it played out. Freddie was a true team player and felt he deserved what he was asking for but he allowed his agent to overplay their hand and from numerous sources told the Braves that this offer is what you have to take by this deadline and after that deadline passed the Braves moved on.

Agree. Agent played hardball, gave an ultimatum with a deadline and lost.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then you and I didn't read the same article.

Mar 19, 2022, 12:11 PM

When you count guaranteed money, Braves offered more per year than the Dodgers, just not the sixth year.

Freeman's agent tried a punk move of floating a fake Dodgers offer and demanding GM Anthopolous sign immediately. They were trying to clown him.

No one should be mad at anyone here except Freeman's ####### agent.

Good move for Braves in long run. They have

Mar 19, 2022, 12:46 PM

Olson locked up and have freed up $ to sign Anderson. Fried, and Riley the next few years. They already have Acuna and Albies signed to long-term deals.

Sorry moab, but thumbs down. This is all on Freddie.

Mar 19, 2022, 3:32 PM

I like Freddie, I really do. But the Braves called his bluff and came out on top. Freddie was slow playing the decision wanting more money and the Braves simply moved on without him and acquired arguably a better prospect. Yes, he should have listened to Chipper. Now, of course Freddie is gonna say, “I was blindsided” in attempt to save face with the fans who loved him as he goes to play for a rival.

Re: Even more disappointed in the Braves ownership after...

Mar 19, 2022, 7:16 PM

Agree with others that this is on freddie and his agent. Braves offered him 5 yrs $140 mil and he slow played them and made an ultimatum.

Read that his deal with the dodgers has a lot of deferred money, so the present value of the contract is basically identical to the braves offer. Don’t know if that even accounts for tax difference. So all in, he probably ended up making less money than he would have by taking the braves offer, and he tarnished his legacy in atlanta. His comments on the process and AA were juvenile at best. Really disappointing the way he handled himself. Go braves
