went "WHUMP" like it does when someone closes a door really hard and fast. 10:21 pm on that particular evening it was. Even though I lived (and still live) over six miles from the chemical plant where I worked at the time, I instinctively knew it was there that the whump originated.

It turned out to be one of many times over the years when good safety practices combined with just blind luck to spare all the human lives involved. The explosion and fire that night could EASILY have resulted in several fatalities, but all were saved by a fellow employee giving those in that plant a heads up that something very wrong was happening out in their back yard, which allowed them (barely) to get out in time.

It was also one of the factors that led me to take an early retirement package 13 years later. Production Chemical Engineers can make very good money, but to say it is a high stress environment would be VERY correct on a whole lot of fronts.
