Let’s face it, Clemson is not a basketball school ?????

I’m not sure why folks keep holding out hope that we ever will be.
And if the NIL crap is allowed to become an arms race to buy players, Clemson should be satisfied to let go of trying to be an elite football school too because then it has just become a semi-pro, NFL farm league. No more amateur, student-athlete facade. Pure, unadulterated pay to play pro type sport.

15 years ago who would have thought Tennesee and Alabama would have credible basketball teams. FSU's basketball team is also credible. Who would have thought Kentucky would have a good football team.
Like many things that change, they become priorities.
Let's make it happen here! Mediocrity sucks!

I was talking to my Notre Dame buddy during the game, and slipped up by saying “….well, after all we are a football school….” The silence from the other end was all I needed to ‘hear’. Well, at least he didn’t laugh at me! Wow, one off year, and it didn’t take long for that fall from grace in the eyes of others, eh? At least he did say he was glad for us, otherwise the sec would own almost ALL the 21st century championships…. sigh….

One problem is that a mid conference level program like ours has to compete with the elites who are in the tournament every year and the best teams from mid level conferences that also regularly make the tourney. Players can go to Gonzaga, Creighton, Oral Roberts et al and get national exposure. I certainly don't know the answer as to how but it takes building a team that makes the tourney more often than not and growing it from there.

Even if we're not winning at a high rate every decade, it doesn't change that fact. Football has an all time ranking of about 20th in the country. Basketball is nowhere to be found. I would like nothing more than Clemson to be a perennial winner in basketball (as well as football and baseball), but unless things change that's not going to happen. Here's to wishing... Go Tigers!!!

Football is that good historically because we've made it

a priority, consistently. The school has funded it as such, and the fans have supported it as such.
Basketball is mostly an afterthought, and our results over 100+ years of basketball show that.
We can't inconsistently support basketball, only when it fits our mood that day/week/year, and expect a coach or a star player to overcome that. It's just not likely to happen.
We have NEVER been consistently good in basketball. We have had a good year here and there, or rarely a few good years in a row, but that has never been sustained.
Hope springs eternal though, doesn't it?

I've said the same thing. To have a successful program there has to be support given to it through $$, facilities, advertising, hires, etc. I wish we were better because it's so fun to watch. I was at Clemson in the early 80s when Bill Foster was coaching. We didn't win them all, but it was exciting and almost always competitive against a high level of competition. We wouldn't miss a home ACC game. That excitement is just gone now.

We (Clemson) SHOULD be able to have a successful

basketball, baseball, or any other athletic program. Because, Clemson people are generally successes. Therefore, it ticks us off when our sports teams are NOT historically successful.
In basketball, for sure, we have reason to be angry at the lack of success. Look at basically every other school in the original ACC. At some point in their history, they have ALL had successful basketball programs, even Georgia Tech under Bobby Cremins. Why does the success tour not stop a Clemson more often than not?
In our current situation, we are asking a zebra to change its stripes. Brad Brownell is an "even keel" type of guy, who patently lacks a fiery temperment. This "Milquetoast" personna spills over onto his teams. I hate to bring up Rick Barnes, but, even though he bailed on us at the first opportunity, the reason the Clemson faithful LOVED him was that he coached hard, his teams PLAYED with fire, and he himself actually got right in Dean Smith's face at one point and stood toe to toe with The Schnozzola Icon. HE had that "It" that I want to see in a Clemson Coach.
A Tiger is a predator, and we need a basketball coach who exemplifies that attitude. Brad Brownell will keep proving he ain't it, as long as we will let him keep on doing it.

I agree, but that wasn't the accusation.

The accusation is that Brad doesn't show emotion.
Rick Barnes getting in Dean Smith's face was the example used as a basketball coach who shows emotion.
I simply reminded everyone that Brad does show emotion, and in fact, got in Roy Williams' face.

We know we are not, but things change. I have seen it. There have to be some really good years in the mix with average ones. That's not asking for much. I am not expecting us to win the National Title or even go to the Final 4. We have been to the tournament 1 time over the last 10 full season. I think it's okay to want more than that.

This wishing and hoping we will strike gold with the right coach or the right recruit and be an elite basketball program is ludicrous.

No one expects Clemson to be elite in basketball... I'm sure most everyone would be happy if we made the NCAA tournament 50% of the time, and competitive in the ACC most years. An ACC crown would be special as well.

We have made 2 of the last 3 NCAA Tournaments

and people still complain.
We finished 5th in the ACC last year, and have finished 6th out of 15 teams on average over the past 4 years, and people complain.
We had a program record number of victories last year over NCAA Tournament teams, and people complained.
Our team consistently plays hard. We've had some really big wins over the last few years. But people still complain.
What's even more amazing to me is that they think our coach is overpaid and that Clemson isn't getting a good return on its basketball investment.

That's why he is still coaching. Somehow we need to bring the excitement back to Littlejohn. The caliber of competition has dropped over the years, and that hurts as well. I wish I still had my "Foster's 6th Man" tee shirt. Good discussion... thanks.
