Lake Keowee...abandoned house...uhhh, castle?

May 17, 2021, 5:31 PM

First time on Lake Keowee this past weekend and had a great time. Saw this partially completed abomination that looks like a combination old Spanish fort and Disney attraction. Anyway, I’m guessing those that know the lake/area know exactly what I’m talking about. What’s the story with this thing?

We call it the Olive Garden house... We went on the lake yesterday and noticed the tarps. I have heard a lot of stories about that house, but not sure of the accuracy.

Olive Garden...I can see that.

Yeah, I’ve since stumbled across a few things online about it...interesting. I would just love to have the money spent on the stone...assuming it is real and not just EIFS.

EIFS or ACMV?

May 18, 2021, 8:33 AM

EIFS is exterior insulated finish system. Synthetic stucco.
ACMV is adhered concrete masonry veneer. concrete "stone". or lick-and-stick in my book. I consider ACMV to be the next EIFS. it's often installed very poorly. I could write a book on improper installation of may building products in the residential market. Even to this day I see window flashing done incorrectly.

What kind of substrate for ACMV?

Directly over dens glass/gypsum or generally block/similar?

A Christian organization bought it at one point...

May 17, 2021, 7:32 PM

... it was used as a retreat for their staffers. Not sure who owns it now. I've walked around the property and it's extravagant, especially for it's day... noticed some blue tarps around parts of it recently.... might be undergoing renno?

I heard it was overtaken by sadists.

I sold real estate at keowee key back in the 80's. Used to boat all over the lake. Used to be a little secluded (small) waterfall we'd go skinny dipping at. Probably grown up now. Great place, great memories.

We did visit a small waterfall in a secluded cove

...no skinny dipping as far as I could tell.

The only waterfall I’m aware of on Keowee is the one at Party Cove. It’s where Fall Creek comes into the lake. If that’s the one you are referring too then I hate to say it’s no longer secluded.

I won’t reveal the location of other hidden coves but most are no longer secluded with all the development!!

That's sad to hear. Great for commerce in the area I suppose. I remember going out for hours and never seeing another boat. Bet it's not like that anymore. Lol

Not a bad gig... Either on a boat with clients or a golf cart.
