B1G Ten problem

Jul 4, 2022, 1:33 PM

Lots of chatter lately about which is better fit for Clemson....Big Ten or SEC. One problem with the Big Ten people need to remember. The currently play a 9 game conference schedule. Meaning 9 of our games will be conference games, plus South Carolina, that's ten games on a twelve game schedule that Clemson will have no option to play. That leaves only two games where Clemson can schedule against whomever....and your dreaming if you think we will schedule a major program and give up playing two minor teams every year (due to adding home games) So basically we will never play Georgia or Auburn ever again in season. Now, it is true that the SEC May also go to a 9 game format....but even so South Carolina would count as one of those games and we would still be free to choose a good non conference opponent. Just something to keep in mind.

I see your point but with the rumored $100M annual payout Clemson will not need the 7th conference game to try and keep up with the SEC and BIG.

7th conference game? What are you talking about? We currently play 8 conference games. In the Big Ten we would play 9. I don't understand what you mean by 7th unless it was a typo.

You can count on both the SEC and B1G to move to 10

conference games at minimum with this new 16-sized + behemoths evolving. The big money is there for conference games, and they will expand those to maximize those media rights dollars. Neither will need to schedule much outside of their own leagues going forward, if any, especially with the new mix each already has on hand.

SCar will fall off our annual schedule unless we are in the same league, IMO.

All posts like this are predicated on thinking in the old model. Forget all that. This will be a new world order where football revenue decisions drive the bus. Who says we will only play 12 regular season games? In my opinion, in the new paradigm, the players will be pseudo employees of the various institutions. As such, they will be paid and asked to generate more dollars for their employers (ie, the universities). More games = more dollars. We could easily play a 15 game regular season schedule.

If the "powers that be" (network execs) determine that us playing Usuc will generate eyeballs on TV screens, we will play them!

Do I like the professionalaztion of college FB? Hell no. But, this train has already left the station. If our beloved Clemson wants to remain relevant, we #### sure better catch it!

Lady I seriously doubt we will see more than a 12 game season

They already don't want to expand the playoffs because of concern of the physical repercussions on the players adding extra games. Head trauma has been huge talk in the NCAA for the past ten or so years. Hi ce why we now have targeting penalties. So I doubt they will subject the player to further wear and harm by adding games.

Iron, I see your point but I guess I'm more cynical than you. To me, this is all about money (unfortunately).

In my opinion, NIL was the first shot across the bow that the idea of the "student athlete" is now circling the drain. The players who choose to go to any of the schools within the "Mega conferences", will do so understanding that they are now "minor league" professionals. They are there to be paid and to generate income for their respective institutions. That being the case, I believe you will see rule changes and schedule structure more like an NFL model.

Players who either don't get recruited to the Mega conference schools, or choose schools outside those conferences for whatever reasons, they will play under guidelines much like what we have today.

You are right Ironcat. Most people don't realize what it means going to a 9 game conference schedule. No more big out of conference games.
9 conference games plus SC means 5 road and 5 home games. The other 2 games would be teams that will come to your stadium without a return game.
