TNET: Elliott says lack of any rhythm stifled the Clemson offense

Elliott says lack of any rhythm stifled the Clemson offense

Clemson’s offense never got into a rhythm Saturday night in the Duke’s Mayo Classic and that led to a lack of success in the run game, especially the quarterback run game, according to offensive coordinator Tony Elliott. Full Story »

Absolutely. The head scratching at the calls started with LSU. Elliot has to go, we are wasting talent

It wasn't a lack of rhythm but a lack of creativity I'm the play calling. No misdirection plays, no screens, no tight end utilization, no draw plays, etc. These are the things that put Clemson on the map. The pop plays and the fake pop plays kept the defenses baffled. Quarterback won't run when the field in front is open. I'm disappointed as a lifetime Clemson fan since the 1970's. Better play calling is needed!

Agree with the lack of screens and draws, but the fact is their Linebackers are bigger faster, and stronger than our RB's, we lose that match-up more often than not. We could have guessed right a few times, as opposed to taking a sack, and picked up some chunk yards though, and all we needed last night was a spark, but nobody stepped up.

yup, we don't go vertical until 3rd and long, when everyone

LJD improvised on that run - was meant to go up the middle

Tony Elliott struggles adjusting game plan. He doesn't need to be the OC. Need to make a trip down to Texas and see if Chad Morris is interested in coming back. O line coach should've known this was a problem. They're weak compared to Georgia. Strength coach needs to be looked at as well.

Tony Elliott is not a good play caller. With all the talent we recruited and you mean to tell me we can't get a single td. Wth man you need to go back to the drawing board. All in all not having a true slot receiver in spector hurt us. Just my opinion.

Lack of offensive creativity and plan left an overated quarterback “a deer in headlights “ And unfortunately CLEMSON still doesn’t have an offensive line… very disappointed and really sad for a Defense that played their hearts out… Gonna be a long season ??

Tony "pass the buck" Elliot was never the creative offensive genius he obviously thinks he is. Jeff Scott was the risk taker, Elliot is plain yogurt.

No Lynn J? Was he in the doghouse?
No designed runs for DJ?
TE's blocking was sub par
No adjustments whatsoever
Running Shipley off tackle? Stoooopid

I agree Crawdad. And will add our entire offense needs to be more physical. The WR’s and TE’s can’t hold blocks so the few times we tried to use the width of the field we were stuffed. Conversely GA was successful with that at times. Just disappointed.

flag link

Rhythm? What?

[1]
Sep 5, 2021, 11:35 AM

More like we got completed manhandled and pushed around. Rhythm doesn't mean a darn thing if you get physically dominated. You can't even think of getting into a rhythm offensively when you give up 8 sacks and rush for a net of roughly zero yards.

The UGA OC gave Tony E a wealth of information last night..

emoji_events [5]
Sep 5, 2021, 11:36 AM

how to get the ball out of your QBs hands quickly.

How long do our plays take to develop?

Sometimes you just need to take the snap and pitch it to the RB and let the OL put a helmet on a helmet. 2-3 yards a carry and you might eat some clock and pick up a first down.

A 250# QB should be able to push the pile for 2 yards.

Heck a few more screen passes might have worked last night but you have to be quick about.

A couple of screen plays would have been nice,

emoji_events [5]
Sep 5, 2021, 11:46 AM

but I am not sure how much more he could have done once the ball was spotted. They were getting pressure with 4 and had their backs sitting in 2 deep all night, th best we could hope for a PA call which did in fact bail us out 2x when we threw a contested ball downfield.. This offense just was not prepared for the big stage. It was hard to even know what plays were called because so many were blown up before they started.

I am also underwhelmed by these backs and their "advanced pass protection" as well as any ability to find a soft spot in a zone defense. So many things went wrong on offense, and that falls on Elliot's shoulders, but I am not sure what he can do about 8 sacks, a lack of talent at RB, and mistakes being made up and down the field. And I am not sure what led to the decision to hold #23 out of the game until the 4th, it could have been the difference. Hopefully, we can come to a consensus that a team that has made it to 6 straight playoff appearances should not have this much trouble landing quality running backs and developing them into "next man up".. I could run through a list of wasted scholarships here, but I am not. It is going to be a long year until one of these guys steps up into a workhorse. #23 has the skills, but I am not sure he can carry this team the way ETN did. Having him in the game and getting chunk yards would have given us this rhythm.

Totally agree. I understand that Will Taylor is a scrambler and has good footsteps. Having a running QB in for a few plays might have worked against a UGA D that was not concerned about DJ running. Will got 1 play, and it was for positive yards. Why not more?

PS: did we make ANY adjustments?
Only 1 pass to a TE?
Where were the passes to Ross on the sidelines?
Where was Ajou Ajou?
Did DJ EVER look at any receiver other than the primary target?
Will Dabo be asking Elliott any of these questions?

The yutes seemed overwhelmed with the pass protect side of things. LJD looked motivated and "faster" than the other two. Looked comfortable and seemed to help calm DJ. Might have been smarter to start the experienced back with the young QB against the beast defensive line.

we also had receivers getting their routes confused, backs missing blocks, open receivers streaking down the center of the field, which was wide open most of the night on slants and skinny posts, yet DJ never threw them the ball. I do not want to watch this one again, but mistakes were made all over on that side of the ball. Thank god we had some dudes step up on defense, or this could have gotten silly.

"Rhythm" is having a string of successfully executed plays. The question is"why did you not have a string of successfully executed plays?" You did not have "rhythm" the entire game because you did not have a string of successfully executed plays the entire game. Another code word I despise is "finish" You did not "finish" because you did not string successful plays together in order to score and win the game. Let's face it and tell it like it is. Once that is done it may then be possible to make progress.

Lack there of. Sometimes it is just not the scheme but personnel. Ross had some success but Ngata was a beast and I kept wondering why Ajou wasn’t on the field. He brings a different type of physicality and size to our WR group. Seemed to be worth a shot anyway. Also, why Galloway is in any game where we need any level of toughness is beyond me. He is so soft and always has been. Davis should get 60% of the plays, JaeLyn 30% and the balance whoever. I may have even liked to see another QB play one series in the 2Q to allow DJU to settle down, get on the headset or beside Streeter and talk thru what was happening on the field, how to manage it, etc.

The OL issues aren’t going away but we need to try to run more to allow our defense to stay fresh but more misdirection is needed given our lack of ability to get any push.

This is not what I wanted to see out of the o this week, and I'm going to be all over it this week getting us prepped and ready. No excuses, we were not playing like the elite team we are, and I 100% own that.

Since Scott left play calling has been crap.
Everyone has learned the few play Clemson has/uses.
And going away from the hurry up offense has hurt Clemson more than anything else. I believe Scott was key to our play calling after Morris left. I think rhythm depends on the ability of getting the plays to the offense quickly.
I think Elliott needs help. He is a great coach for the most part but not in this area.
I hope Dabo recognizes this and fixes it now.

Bottom line Tony...is when we got first downs in the second half....and had uga on the run a bit....we do the hurry up and then ....slow it down allowing uga time to adjust. ####,If we are just went hurry up a few times after getting first downs we could've gotten several too many men on the field penalties. In this type of game, considering the way our offense was going, another 5 yards would've been gold in their territory.

Yes, DJ sucked as did the OL(got a bit better as game went on)..but we did little to help them out. The better team won…… But this game was totally winnable with adjustments and creativity. Would've loved to have had Dan Mullen type play caller ...we could've manufactured a few more points IMO.

9 total runs to the RB for 24 yards. One of these was a 10 yard run by Dixon on his only carry of the game. The offensive line was abysmal, zero progress compared to what we saw vs Ohio State. Post 2018 where we’re at is a team that will run roughshod through the ACC only to get bludgeoned again by good interior lines from the SEC and Big 10.

The offense was painful to watch, but the Clemson and UGA defenses were stellar. Both defenses played excellent aggressive football. The Georgia offense was no world beater either. I would have to say a large part of our offense's putrid performance had to do with the excellence of the UGA D. The UGA punter and Spiers made it tough on both teams.

That being said, our OL is mediocre. Period. The play calling was very unimaginative and based on DJ's habits of holding on the ball too long, seemingly not being willing to put his head down and run, along with appearing to be much, much slower than Deshaun or Trevor does not bode well for having the type of season we spoiled Tiger fans have become accustomed to.

We don't have an elite offense. We do have an elite defense. We will still win a lot of games, but I think we lose 2-3 more. I hope I am wrong, but if this is the type of offense we bring to a decent opponent we are in trouble.

Need some BIG Uglies as a priority who have an attitude. I saw a lot of matador blocking last night.
