Kitchen appliances

Mar 9, 2021, 11:11 AM

Anyone have any advice, definite buys, horror stories about appliances? Looking at Kitchenaid, but open to all suggestions.

Only horror stories I have heard are Samsung stuff

Mar 9, 2021, 11:22 AM

but no personal experience. LG seems to get good ratings from Consumer Reports. I tried to get an LG fridge back in June last year, and there was a 6 week wait, so I had to go with what was in stock and got a GE.

that aint what he is axing about. Had a Frigidaire Gallery Convection oven that fried the motherboard(?) less than 3 years into using it, replaced with cheaper version and it seems to be working fine. Tried to replace the board but there was wiring fried as well and that got over my head and into the "Possibly cheaper to replace than repair" category.

I have had some good luck with Samsung (fridge and w/d)

but I think it's a crapshoot with different models.

I think NoIntro is correct below - they are all crap (potentially).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I got a Samsung kitchen suite prolly 3.5 years ago,

Mar 9, 2021, 12:51 PM [ in reply to Only horror stories I have heard are Samsung stuff ]

got the extended warranty through Costco. Only issue was the icemaker freezing over, a known Samsung design flub. They sent a guy out under warranty and he replaced the whole unit and motherboard on the back of the fridge (it's a smart'un), no charge. No issues since, so I guess they fixed that design flaw. Dishwasher, microwave, and range (besides not being gas, Obed) have all been pretty flawless. I'm sure all three will break at 5 years and 2 weeks.

I dig the Wolf range with the red knobs, but I'm doing a cooktop instead of a slide in, and the wolf cook tops don't look as nice.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you looked at Induction range tops?

Mar 9, 2021, 11:25 AM

Controls temp as good as if not better than gas, does not get hot, easy to clean up.

Re: Have you looked at Induction range tops?

Mar 9, 2021, 11:26 AM

The kind of cooking I do is just suited better for gas, and that's the look we're going for. I have seen how fast those induction tops will boil water and holy crapola. I'm so tired of cooking in my crueset and cast iron on a glass top though.

lots of chefs moving that way just to get the heat out of the kitchen in restaurants.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes but gas is still standard and what most home cooks

Mar 9, 2021, 11:42 AM

prefer. It would be the first thing I'd replace if I were buying a home with an induction top

It would cost me more to replace all of my cookware and I don't have cheap taste in anything

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you don't have cheap taste in anything

Mar 9, 2021, 11:49 AM

your cookware is probably good to go. I have All-Clad and cast iron. Only stuff that does not work would be aluminum cheap stuff. I also use a ceramic pan I love.

I would do the opposite btw, get rid of gas and put in induction.

To each his own.

Again, most home cooks have never tried induction, so they think it is similar to the electric glass top range. It ain't even in the same ballpark. And many units cost more than gas.

Mar 9, 2021, 11:25 AM

poke around and read online reviews, and they're all negative. Kitchenaid is owned by Whirlpool now, I think they're using it as an upscale option. I've liked Whirlpool since I worked for an appliance store in high school.

I posted some recently about a Frigidaire Gallery french door/bottom freezer that lasted me 6 yrs. Last year I realized the back was rusting out due to poor design of the ice maker. Then I had trouble with sensors and a control module. Now I have a Whirlpool, it looks almost the same as a Kitchenaid, except the Kitchenaid had some fake wood trim on the inside shelves and drawers, and soft-close drawers. The Kitchenaid was several hundred dollars more. I hate extended warrantees, but I recommend them for refrigerators.

I have a Kitchenaid dishwasher, it's been great for a few yrs so far. The Frigidaire gas range and microwave I bought at the same time as the crap fridge are doing great too.

Nice. I feel compelled to get the same brand fridge/oven/microwave/dishwasher. The cook top isn't as important I guess and the wine fridge only has a few options for brands for build in ones.

I like frigidaire stuff, but their wall oven has these weird knobs for temp control instead of just entering the temp? Kind of turned off by that

Re: Kitchen appliances

Mar 9, 2021, 1:37 PM

I've been a Whirlpool fanboy for years, but not anymore. Replaced all appliances a year ago during a kitchen remodel and within 2 months, the ECB was replaced on the range and light switch for the fridge. I'm now awaiting the second ECG to be replaced on the range in less than a year. Whirlpool will not replace the range and the ECB has been on back order for ~3 weeks or so. They know it's a problem but won't issue a recall, stock ECBs to address the problem quickly nor agree to replace.

I used to install appliances during my high school and college years and Whirlpool was the best of what I saw. Those days have changed. When the Whirlpool-contracted serviceman tells you to get extended warranties on all of your new appliances during a service call, that's damning. #neveragain

Read a story recently about a guy whose wife damaged a side mirror on a highend car, I forget the brand/model. Caught it on the garage backing out and broke it off. With all of the built-in sensors and whatnot, total cost to replace was over $4000. A side mirror.

Appliances officially jumped the tech shark when they

Mar 9, 2021, 4:48 PM

started putting IP addresses on clothes washers and refrigerators.

My last clothes washer had a reservoir where I could pour about 4 or 5 wash loads of detergent in so that I didn't have to add it every time I did laundry. That was a neat option, but I'm sure that in time, it would probably break, and I'd be adding it the old fashioned way. It also had an option to put a wireless wifi connection on it so that it could tell me when it was out of laundry detergent and through some home automation magic could have Amazon order it.

I like tech as much as the next guy, but isn't it just as easy, and a lot less breakable, for me to just check to see if I have laundry detergent, I dunno, when I wash my clothes?

When I moved last Oct, I sold the < 1 year old washer and 10 year old dryer to someone for < half what I paid for the washer to someone off of NextDoor. Apparently, it didn't make the 3 days it took to get to Ohio (yes..someone moved BACK to Ohio) before the washer broke. It had a warranty that I transferred to them, but I have gone exactly 1 month since then that they haven't called or emailed me asking something about the pair. Next time, rather than profit the $375 I sold it for, I think I'll just leave it at the curb for the metal recycling dude to pick up at 4 am on Tuesday, and avoid the long distance washer-dryer help desk calls.

cause me to be more leery of technology than most folks. Because I've seen what's behind the curtain. It ain't genius, it ain't foolproof, and people screw up. All the time. ####, most of the time.

My mom bought new appliances in 1966... Avocado Green. When she died in 2003, everything still worked. Stove, oven, fridge, clothes washer & dryer, etc. And the big black rotary dial phone... I think I've posted vids of it ringing, it will still wake the dead and the voice quality is crystal clear. All that chit was built to last.

Mar 10, 2021, 10:22 AM

Samsung refrigerator that tells you when you're out of cheese?

Nobody, that's who. Want to know how Skynet becomes self aware? It starts with 80 billion unpatched washers, dishwashers, refrigerators and toasters that are on the internet 24 hours a day waiting for someone in China to implant the next stuxnet on them.

The only advantage to them is that they will all break in less than 10 years, so I figure they do have some self deprecating life cycle built in.
