Just curious on what your thoughts on Ken Hatfield and his tenure here at Clemson.

one almost had to be at everygame during those years to visibly witness the drop in talent level....and while the comeback win at UVa ranks as one of the best in Clemson history, Hatfield & staff drew poor grades for gametime decisions and especially for recruiting overall....IMO

Good Coach BUT

Jun 24, 2016, 12:51 PM [ in reply to Re: Ken Hatfield ]

Ken Hatfield did not have the long term vision or the organizational prowess that Dabo Swinney has. We were blessed the day our AD let Tommy Bowden go and promote our best coach since the early Danny Ford years.

that he would be more successful today. Heck, our own people were recruiting against him. Bad situation. I dont think we know what kind of program he could have had.

Dabo has succeeded in getting everyone going in the same direction. We were so splintered then that the next coach was guaranteed to fail.

The loss to California in the Citrus bowl was the game that convinced me that he needed to go. He took a team that had won the ACC and they got embarrassed in the Citrus bowl. They were outmatch and looked out of shape. Never in my life up to that point did I see a Clemson Football team get handled like that. He Sucked.

We went to a pre-game Citrus Bowl pep rally. One of the Clemson players led a cheer which was "Cal ain't $hit. Cal ain't $hit." We had our young son with us and it was totally embarrassing and showed that the coach didn't have control of the team. We lost big time.

I gave up 6 tickets on 50 yard line after Citrus Bowl. Waited two years for everyone Hatfield was at Clemson before buying tickets again. Never stopped giving but the guy was a joke. Chester would tell him to go F himself at practice and still start the next week. He was not respected.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ford would have won at least 1 more Natty

Jun 24, 2016, 1:42 PM

in either 91 or 92. Those teams were loaded.

I was a Freshman Student Equip manager in 93. I was assigned to the DL with Les Herrin, who was a holdover from Danny's staff, and I can tell you none of the coaches on those staffs respected Ken.

It was literally a joke to hear them talk...Herrin, Stockstill and Alridge. All of Danny's defensive coaches hated Hatfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Totally Agree.

Jun 24, 2016, 1:57 PM

Definitely in 1990 and another thereafter. Hatfield was a halfway decent coach. But he would/could not recruit and his players were out of shape. He ruined Ford's program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Totally Agree.

Jun 24, 2016, 2:14 PM

Hatfield brought in Dickerson...bad move...Hatfield ran 3 plays, that was about it...bad play selection. Bill Oliver was not retained....stupid move...Our offense sucked, we had no imagination, at the end, we had no offensive line. I don't remember... which school, either AF or Rice he sucked so bad that they tried to buy him out but could not raise the money so he stayed. My biggest problem with the guy was leaving Arkansas in the middle of the night and shows up at Tigertown---no class... I thought that we should have promoted Bill Oliver or gone after Erk Russell at UGA---nothing would have missed a beat

That is pretty much the way it went. My family and friends all had seasons tickets during that era. Hatfield really never was popular with the fans. He really did not have much of a personality and did not recruit well either. Just my 2 cents. He never seemed all in.

It was clear that day that a change needed to be made. That my friends is why we fired a winning coach. We saw the future that day and it scared the #### out of us!

We'd fired him and he took the job at Rice. We're all about half drunk one night and the news of his Rice hiring is on TV. The announcer said something about how maybe he could take their program to respectability, and perhaps even a bowl.

My buddy immediately quips: "Ken Hatfield couldn't get Rice in a bowl at a Chinese restaurant."

Boom. Instant classic.

Re: Ken Hatfield

Jun 24, 2016, 7:36 PM

I played under both Ford and Hatfield. The difference was night and day. The man was a good man but terrible coach. Ford had men who played on the edge. Hatfield could not control them and they ran all over Ken. We played a game in Japan before the Citrus Bowl and we pretty much flew in from Tokyo to bowl practice, which i believe is why we looked so bad. We were dog tired and jet lagged the first week of prep and never recovered. Ken was a terrible gameday coach too. I remember when we lost to UVA for the first time ever and he panicked and started called razorback plays or when we had Ga Tech beat with 4 cracks from the 1 to win it and he ran 4 straight fullback dives into the heart of 2 NFL linebackers and we lost. They won the national title and we didn't. We would have one the natty had he ran anything, just one #### play different. We went I think 20-3-1 his first 2 years despite him. Had Ford remained I know unless we had some crazy injuries that we would have won the natty both 90 and 91. We were LOADED! Yes sir, Ken was a nice man but he killed it and it has taken 25 years to build it back.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jun 25, 2016, 7:36 AM

Could have been so off base. I remember the student protests over Danny leaving and the national news coming to campus. Hayfield was just the wrong guy for many reasons. Sad to think we had a few more cracks at a national championship had Danny stayed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

for more reasons than the coach. The administration did not care about football, and made it painfully obvious.

He was a poor coach. Bad strategy, bad recruiter. He was an example of a person in over their head. A very
bad selection by the school. Tommy West was just as bad for the sam reasons. A nice person
