Just watched replay of NC state game

On last play of last overtime, a DJ pass to Ross incomplete, looked like Ross was held. Anyone else see this? No replay as game over.

Looked like it and Ross should have made more effort for it to be noticed . Didn’t look like he was upset about it and didn’t try to work the refs for a call

That last play should have been a short pass for the first down, not a low percentage end zone pass. Coaching 101. Just like the play from our 2 yd line with 15 sec left against Tech should have had the QB under center. Again, coaching 101.

Looked to me like the ball was perfectly thrown by DJ, and Ross could’ve run right under it.

I think the worst call of the game that kept a drive going for nc st was the call when they first called Spector for targeting then reversed that an immediately called him for late hit on the sane play. No way was that a late hit. The running back was still on his feet and trying to brake a tackle. If that was a late hit 90% of all tackles by two or more tacklers would be a late hit. This advanced and kept a drive going for a touchdown.

Agree. Don't forget the "No Play" completion on the NCS offside in the 1st qtr., the NCS hold in OT, the no call facemask call on DJ, the CU offside that wasn't, the NCS qb's head knob hard counts, the blatant pick play by NCS on their TD, etc., etc. 200 yds of penalties in the game. Quite frustrating to say the least, but we should have been able to overcome them I guess.

Such a stupid rule that when the review for targeting, if they see that the hit isn’t worthy of targeting or a personal foul that they can’t waive off the personal foul flag.

It may have been, however. DJs throw on first down of the second overtime could not have been thrown any better. As-a-matter-of-fact, it looked like the exact throw that the NC State QB made and their receiver caught the ball for the TD. For Ross to be considered an elite receiver, that catch has to be made. The NC St. receiver made the catch--our receiver didn't. NC St wins the game.

The ball could definitely have been thrown better. Ross is 3 steps ahead of the defender, turns all the way around and back pedals a couple steps because it is under thrown, then dives sideways. He definitely should have caught it, and that’s why he was so upset afterwards, but if the ball was thrown 5 feet further downfield Ross likely catches it easily in stride. Just a really bad game where everything went wrong (poor play, poor officiating, unlucky breaks, etc). Heartbroken for Bresee, and interested to see what Venables does this season to keep the defense rolling, but I already dread watching the offense this weekend against Jeff Hafley’s defense.
Go Tigers!

this is also part of a separate post but here ya go, that was textbook PI. Not called.
Here is the sequence, defender grabs Ross arm and holds on (arrows), does not turn his head to the ball and holds Ross all the way thru the play. Hold him enough that not only does he inhibit Ross from extending his arms but changes his body trajectory after the ball went by.
This explains why in the stadium it appeared Ross did not even try to catch the ball.
ACC referees are awful. This is just one of several calls that were ticky-tacky or borderline calls that affected the outcome of the game, 3d down when Spector "drew the defence" was another really marginal call...

I saw this statement on one of the videos but I feel pretty good it is a State fan but makes a little since.
Money 421 2 days ago (edited) I was in the student section behind that end zone and I can confirm that the last play was not interference. I have a video on my phone and can confidently tell you that, for some reason, it looked much more like a PI on TV than it actually was. Judging from my video, it seems like the receiver lost the flight of the ball as it was going over his shoulder (ball flew over his helmet and ended up a few feet in front of the receiver’s right shoulder- it was definitely a difficult pass to track from the receiver’s perspective).

Ross is an excellent receiver as we all know. He was outstanding the entire game, but he lost it on that play. We expected him to make the catch and that's why the long play was called. Oh well, nothing is guaranteed. Hopefully, Ross and DJ rebound with a vengeance.

Sort of thought the same thing. But it also seems like he never really picked the ball up visually.
Still not sure we went deep twice when just we needed 5 yards. A slow, methodical possession for a TD would have given the battered defense a chance to rest. Striking fast for the end zone would just put them right back on the field. But what do I know? I'm the idiot who never sent Jim and Tammy Faye Baker my deposit for the PTL condos, unlike some of the others here who constantly post about how infallible certain people are.

If there was use case for PI this was it... hands on the receiver, holding his arm so he cannot put it up, tugs on Ross and he can't get his hands up or balance, looks like he saw it just could not get his left hand up because he was being tugged by the d-back, d-back never turns his head...

As the ball is arriving, Ross' left arm is undoubtedly being held.
Thanks for the images. Now we know - it was interference. So it begs the question - why wasn't Ross going crazy for that call? I still wonder if he ever spotted the ball?
