This is what good coaching can do for you.

Our basketball team has no five star recruits. Duke has four. They have a top 5 recruiting class every year. We are usually in the 30s or 40s.

We won by 8. Us beating them is like TCU beating Georgia in football this year, and we know how that game went.

Look at our roster. Other than PJ Hall, we have no top 50 recruits. But we do have a bunch of guys who play their tails off and have improved over the course of their Clemson careers. Consider the dramatic improvement in guys like Hall, Hunter Tyson, Chase Hunter, Ian Schieffelin, and Ben Middlebrooks. That’s good coaching.

Our group of unheralded players beat the most talented team in college basketball. And we did it without our best shooter (Hemenway), and despite our best player this year not having a good game (Tyson). Another one of our best players also had a bad game (Chase Hunter) and we still won.

Great job, Tigers! What a win! We are now 15-3, 7-0 in the ACC, first place by ourselves. We have won 11 straight ACC regular season games. What a season!

Get behind this team. We can be special. Go Tigers!

Hey man, we get it. We are having a good year. Discrediting our players talent to fit your narrative just makes you look like an a hole. It wasn't always brad, he's proven he can't coach a team that doesn't blend together well and make them hole.

He has proven this year, kind of, with some terrible losses, that he can win with a good roster. Is that credit to the players or the coach? Seems like it's the players to me. They seem different, coach doesn't.

Until then, you can be on the Jaguars’ bandwagon.

I’ll keep cheering for our Tiger basketball team and marveling at what an incredible job they are doing.

I haven't missed a Clemson basketball game on radio or TV since I was in high school and had a baseball game at night. I promise I know just as much as you about Clemson basketball, it's a passion of mine. Doesn't meant I have to blindly support the disappointment I've had.

over the years saying that it’s all about the coach. When we haven’t had great seasons, it’s Brownell’s fault. When we lost a close game, it was Brownell’s fault.

Given that, shouldn’t Brownell get credit when we are having a great season? Of course he should.

Of course the players deserve credit. As I said, they play their tails off and have improved since arriving on campus. But the truth is that they aren’t elite 5 star recruits like Duke has. That’s no knock on them at all.
The point is, our guys beat theirs even though they shouldn’t based on the significant talent difference on paper.

This isn’t hard to understand.

I mean, based on your new stance it had t0 be. You can't speak out both sides of your mouth and expect to fool people. So stop trying.

By your own words, Brad is responsible for all of it, which has been 11 years of basically nothing truly successful, then we rode the coattails of Gabe DeVoe and the hot guards. Other than that, 11 years of mediocre or below. Right? Right. Just admit it.

By the way, it's not wise to count your chickens before they hatch. You may want to save your petty trolling for if/when we actually accomplish something. It's obvious wisdom isn't your strongsuit, but at least try. Mmmkay?

The difference this year is:
Better players than in the past
CBB’s sudden discovery that to win you have to play offense
Playing to win instead of playing not to lose.
Confident/better shooters
I give credit to any/all of the coaching changes to Graham Neff.

Is that what you’re hoping for, bud? Perhaps you just hate basketball? If that’s the case, then forgive my question. However, if you’re a Clemson fan, you don’t REALLY feel that way, do you? I mean if Clemson finishes in the Top 3 in the league and manages to finish the regular season ranked and with an NCAA seeding of no worse than 5, would you really be really upset about that? That’s hard to believe. But, if you’ve been a Clemson fan for any amount of time, and you’ve happened to follow basketball at all, then you best enjoy this season no matter who the head basketball coach might be. These seasons don’t happen too often for the ole Tigers, and I’ve been following the B-ball ant Clemson since about 1987. Again, though, if you just hate basketball, I can understand that, and please forgive me wasting your time. Have a great night or day. Go Tigers!

1

Jan 15, 2023, 3:09 AM [ in reply to Just stop already. ]

It's about supporting past and present Clemson players. So you basically contradicted your own thread.
Or does your support of past and present Clemson players only apply to Basketball? Or do you only support present Clemson players? Or present Clemson basketball players?

I was hoping Mike Williams was going to play and have a good game too. If that had been the case, it would have been a win-win either way, 'cept the Jags have 3 former Clemson players to the Chargers one.

If Brad Brownell was such a great coach

4

Jan 15, 2023, 3:57 AM [ in reply to Just stop already. ]

It wouldn’t have taken him this long to do what we’re doing this year. And I’m sorry. I’m happy for the team. But I’m not getting excited because we’ve been here before. We’ve had plenty of good starts. Not this good. But plenty of good starts. Then crashed and burned!

I am cautiously optimistic!

This is the weakest ACC in decades. The ACC has been down for several years. We had more success back in the 80s. Brad Brownell has better facilities and more support than any coach in Clemson basketball history.

Like I said. Cautiously optimistic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, we’ve never been here before.

2
3

Jan 15, 2023, 9:20 AM

We’ve never been 7-0 in the ACC.

We’ve never won 11 ACC regular season games in a row.

Be cautiously optimistic if that’s what works for you, but that doesn’t take away from how well-coached this team is and how incredible the player development has been.

If you’re a Clemson fan, you should acknowledge what a great job our coaching staff has done.

If youre a true fan, you have to wonder why its taken this long. Is it because hes FINALLY gotten his crap together? Or is it because there is no coach K, no Dean, boemheim is a dementia patient, Leonard cant seem to find a clue, etc, etc. I'm hoping that we win our 2 nd league championship in 70 years, but not real happy its taken this long.

The problem is that that you’ve acted like yourself too many times in this forum.

I’m thrilled about our basketball team’s success. I’m happy our coach is successful, but most folks here are starting to realize that when JK comes to the party, he brings a bag of potato chips as a gift but then sneezes into the punch bowl, double dips the chips, and then poops on your couch.

You really aren’t very bright Are you?

1

Jan 15, 2023, 10:30 AM [ in reply to No, we’ve never been here before. ]

One. It’s called context.

Two. I acknowledged it’s the best start we’ve ever had in conference play, but I also mentioned we have had other good starts to seasons before.

You do realize we lost three games out of conference to teams we should not have lost to? One game was a blowout. To a nobody. The other two were by a total of three points. Typically losing close games to inferior teams is an example of poor coaching.

We have had numerous seasons that started out hot and promising under Brad. Then they turned to dust! That is undeniable. That is a fact. So yes, we have been here before. It’s an expression. It’s called nuance and context. If you had any intelligence you would understand that. If you had any objectivity, you would understand that.

1

Jan 15, 2023, 9:24 PM [ in reply to Almost everything you listed is this team. ]

We have underachieved in football two years in a row, and rather than talk about how good we’ve been over the last decade. Never mind the fact that the two most recent years have been a significant departure from that.

Likewise, with basketball, some of you can’t talk about how good we are this year without going back a decade because it makes your argument better (which in this case, it’s not to praise a coach, but to criticize him).

Admit it, some of you are so ashamed of our football performance that you can’t being yourself to acknowledge what a wonderful job our basketball program is doing.

You are really going to compare Jack Leggett to Brad Brownell. He didn't just go to Omaha twice. He went 6 times. He missed the playoffs once in 22 years. Yes we never won the title, but I think that is a little higher standard, than can the team make the playoffs.

As far as Brad goes, it is usually a case of what have you done for me lately. Lately Brad has us 2 games ahead of the field in the ACC. We are for all practical purposes 4 games ahead of Duke. I am uneasy that the rug won't be pulled out from under us, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. For right now Brad is doing fantastic, and I will gladly eat crow.

I would like to point out to JK and all of the fans that criticized fan support, that Littlejohn is rocking now that the product is better. Clemson basketball fans are fair weathered, but when the weather is good they come out in force.

Jack inherited a great program, and ran it into the dirt!

Brad has had a historically weak ACC that has seen other football schools like Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, coming to the conference and have more success.

Because of cable TV and the ACCN the program has had more exposure than ever during his tenure.

He has been the highest paid coach and best facilities of any basketball coach in Clemson history.

As others have stated, he has done more with less than anyone in Clemson basketball.

No league championship
No tourney championship

I guarantee you, if Barnes had stayed, we would have had at least one of those. Friggin fsu, Miami, n.d. and va tech won. Usuc can claim something that we CANT!!!!!!!!!!

Brownell has had talent. There have been several that have made it, albeit only shortly, to the NBA. Lots have made it internationally. Brownell has been here far too long, with far too little results. As the saying goes, even a blind dammmm squirrel finds a friggin nut. But not our friggin BB coach.

As for Jack Leggett, he produced. He PRODUCED results. We can argue about the game passing him by, but there are multiple successful years for Leggett. You can't say that for Brownell. Brownell has had more than enough time to overcome previous coaches. This is his team. He has had enough time to produce. Other teams have....why can't he???

Our fans shouldn’t act like we have this great basketball fan base when it takes an unprecedented accomplishment to show up, against a high profile team like Duke at that.

I would be more impressed if we had a sellout in a year when we are mid-pack in the ACC and on the NCAA Tournament bubble. That would be something noteworthy from a Clemson fan perspective.

But again, great support last night. It helped us for sure.

By the way, Jack’s best three years were his first three years. The program was in steady decline under Jack. I know because I ran the numbers on a three-year rolling average. He had two big seasons near the end and both times choked in Omaha to the gamecocks! And it was largely because of his coaching style. His last few seasons were a hot mess!

Re: Brownell has won 400 games as a college head coach.

Jan 15, 2023, 9:08 AM

Also, please remember, I've defended Brownell, too. But I'm not a sycophant, or "cult member" as JK like to put it for people who support Dabo overmuch.

For example, here's a posting I made from last April:

Well, I've become convinced that it is almost certainly time to find someone who can help Clemson win more games, more consistently. And certainly if next years results are not better.

But there are significant positives for Brownell, nonetheless.

Here's one: first and only Clemson coach to ever win a game at Chapel Hill, breaking an 0-59 streak.

In the last 6 years, his teams have won several post-season games, including making an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2018.

2017 ACC tournament, #12 seed, beat #13 NCSU, then lost to #5 Duke (Duke won tournament).
2018 ACC tournament, #4 seed (double-bye), beat #12 BC, then lost to #1 UVS (UVA won tournament)
2019 ACC tournament, #9 seed lost to #8 seed NCSU 59-58
2020 ACC tournament, #8 seed beat #9 Miami (Brownell became first Clemson coach to end the season with a win, as remaining ACC and NCAA & NIT games were canceled due to COVID)
2021 ACC tournament, #5 seed, lost to #13 Miami
2022 ACC tournament, #10 seed, beat #13 NCSU, then lost to #7 Va Tech (Va Tech won tournament)

2017 NIT #2 seed, first round loss to #7 seed Oakland
2018 NCAA #5 seed made Sweet 16 (beat #12 New Mexico State and #4 Auburn, lost to #1 Kansas [KSU final four])
2019 NIT #2 seed, won 1st round vs #7 Wright State, lost to #6 Witchita State
2020 no post season for anyone (COVID)
2021 NCAA #7 seed, lost to #10 seed Rutgers
2022 did not qualify

Brownell and Clemson represented the US in the 2019 World University games, went 6-0 and won the gold medal.

I cannot remember any disciplinary problems of any significance on Brownell teams. As far as I know, there's not been any allegations of NCAA violations on Brownell teams.

In years past, Clemson got run out of the gym on a regular basis, with 20 or even 30 point losses. I feel the poor record Brownell has in close games overlooks the fact that there are now more close games (but I have not done any analysis to that effect, it just seems that way). Yeah, we have some big losses, but they're not by 30 points anymore and I feel like the team is playing hard every minute of every game rather than giving up like they obviously did in the past.

irst off, I love the positivity about the basketball team.

You’re not slick though Judge. Has your mind changed about Brad and this program, or are you acting like it because you’ve been bashing them up until this run and you know you’re wrong?

And we’re a good team because of talent and chemistry. Proof that we have talent is Hunter Tyson being top 10 in the country in double doubles. We consistently have a 20+ point scorer in every game we play. PJ Hall would be the 2nd best if not the best player on Duke no question. Chase Hunter had an off day, but is obviously a gifted PG. Then the chemistry is what allows us to stay in games when we get in a bad situation and to stay up as well.

So good post of appreciation, but commit to believing in this thing or don’t. I’ll remember this when you bash the basketball team and the delusion all of the fans have about Brad.

Brownell getting PJ hall saved his job. Spartanburg product that has turned out to be a legit NBA prospect. There has been a lot of mediocre basketball over the last decade and a lot of Clemson fans have checked out. Just bad recruiting, bad coaching (especially end of game) and I believe laziness on his part. He should have been able to ride the tide of the football program a lot better that he has from a recruiting standpoint. No amount of pumping can change that. We all want Clemson to do well and the administration has given him every opportunity to do so.

Until we win the tourney, Brownell, and every other Clemson coach, has not completed their "mission". Weve been in the ACC how many years? 70????? And weve never won a tourney? All teams aren’t 15-3? At least 11 of the top 25 lost this week. Maybe more parity than down. I do think Billy Donlan and Lucas McKay have made a world of difference. See PJ Hall.

Brad has been the coach 12+ years. Judge him on the sum of the results over 12+ years. The players on the team change annually.

This win is more about the current players playing their ### off and not some coach.

Have the facilities suddenly improved to account for the recent success? That supposedly has been the missing piece in the past according to you.

Good for the kids playing and I'm happy for Brownell too, but give credit where credit is due. The win was great and Littlejohn was rocking last night over what the players were doing, not over Brownell.

One thing is for certain, barring a total collapse which I don't see coming, Brad's job is secure. He'll probably get a several year extension. Maybe with a successful season, he can begin to recruit at a high level as winning can beget winning.

I kind of see Clemson basketball, right now... like Wake football in the early 2000s. They arent going to get the 5 star guys so they have to build a team up, get them older, and every 3-4 years they get a squad and go win something. That is what Jim Grobe did at Wake... that is what Brownell does at Clemson. I consider the first season after LJ was rebuilt when you start the clock on Brownell since we were painfully behind before that. His seat was very warm so this is exactly the kind of season he needed... the program needed.
Can he finish the job and build something that higher rated recruits will want to start considering? I hope so.. someone is going to have to take that step if we are ever going to regularly compete...but I am here for it and cheering them on.

We can certainly credit coaching when there are plenty of those who have regularly criticized it. My only callout to your initial post would be crediting the staff for bringing Galloway back home. A clear miss in our recruiting a few years ago. He really seems to bring our team together at crucial times.

Brad has lived off the portal in recent years(by necessity) and no doubt the covid year has worked in our favor for Tyson and Galloway.

I really thought losing prosper, Newman, honor and Dawes would have sunk us, but the team is playing great. I wish those guys well, and hope things work out to for them, somewhere else. Credit brad for the recruiting of Schieffelin too! He is another one that has been unjustly called out at times. Obviously by trolls who don’t follow our team regularly.

Here’s to enjoying things! We certainly have all seen great starts and momentum change quickly in the past, but hoping we can exorcise some more demons before this season is over.

Why is it every time someone says something folks don’t agree with they are called coot, scok, etc? Is that the best response you can come up with when you are not educated enough to debate the point?

Evidently you don’t know the post history of Cobbox. He literally got busted for posting as JstoneD329. Now you’re educated.

What does that have to do with calling folks names? Busted? What does that even mean? Hardly anyone uses their real name.

He posted under one handle then forgot to log off before posting under his other handle. Get it now stupid?

And so your point is that makes him a “coot”? Any number of people may have more than one.

How dumb are you? Not 1 time did I call him a coot. Scok means someone that posts under 2 or more handles. If the 1959 part of your handle indicates your age I apologize as that means you’re old and up past your bedtime.

So calling him a scok is an argument to his opinion?

Bwahahahahahaha

If you enjoy mediocrity, AT BEST, you continue with that thought. I'm tired of us being middle of the pack. As you pointed out, BB is CLOSE to .500. How is that acceptable? 2018 was his best year and we were third. 11-7 in the acc. Won one game in the tourney. This is his 13th year. If he camt figure it out by now, its time to get someone in here who can

Great win at home, but the TCU/UGA comparison is a little much….

Jan 15, 2023, 6:20 PM

Duke is really good…but State and Wake also beat them recently. They are not UGA football talent-wise this year.
And this is not the first time we’ve beaten Duke at Littlejohn under Brownell…better Duke teams than this one in some cases.
We are doing great. Long way to go…but could be a really special season.
But not sure the football comparisons are going to get you anywhere. A basketball comparison might be more helpful. Lots of less talented teams beat teams with better recruits more often in basketball. The win over Duke at home type of game is pretty normal in basketball…I think 11 ranked teams lost yesterday.
To me, the 7-0 in conference is the most impressive thing…just because it’s hard to be consistent. In that sense…the hoops team is like the football team…would love for us to win the ACC in both sports!

How does anybody TD this ???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was at the game yesterday afternoon.

Jan 15, 2023, 8:36 PM

It was the first basketball game I’ve been to in 40 years (I used to go to all of them when I was a student.)

I’ve always been a fan of all sports at Clemson, not not always a fan of all the coaches. I think it’s time for a change of the head basketball coach, but the team is on a good roll… let’s see how the season ends.

But the main thing that the roll the team is on PROVES is that millions of dollars for coaches and facilities DO NOT *need* to be given to any sports team, basketball included, to improve performance on the field.

Let’s put that failed argument to rest. ?

Go Tigers!

But wait, I thought everyone wanted to FIRE Brownell the past 3 years!?!?

Funny how that changes with a little winning. o_O
