Clemson Football Coaching Evaluation - 2021 Season

Head Coach-Dabo Swinney:
Grade: B
Tough decisions to make during the offseason. Needs to evaluate all coaches on the offense after one of the worst offensive seasons in school history. Find a way to completely rebuild and REJUVENATE recruiting and use the portal to fill glaring needs.

Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers-Brent Venables
Grade: A+
Just continue to grind as normal. Best coach on staff. Only thought is to continue to utilize the 4-man front even during prevent situations. He learns and grows with the best of them. A true tactician.

Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Tight Ends-Tony Elliot
Grade: D
Option 1 for him is to be reassigned to just Assistant Coach and Tight Ends. Option 2 is for him to get a Head Coaching job somewhere. He is a smart, good man but this position needs new blood and fresh ideas. He’s not a quality play caller but can absolutely lead a program in the CEO role similar to Dabo.

Special Teams Coordinator and Safeties-Mickey Conn
Grade: C
Special teams have been stagnant for years. We don’t go after punts to be blocked and we have walk ons as returnmen. The UCONN TD on the opening play didn’t do him any favors. Safety recruiting has been decent and that play has improved. Still a lot of room to grow.

Passing Game Coordinator and Quarterbacks-Brandon Streeter
Grade: D
He doesn’t get an F because while I was sitting on the front row behind the offensive bench this past Saturday I saw that he was at least trying to coach and communicate. My concern is that Trevor seemed to regress and now it’s happening to DJ. The passing game is atrocious. We haven’t used the middle of the field consistently since Watson left. He needs to be reassigned to recruiting coordinator only. He’s an outstanding relationship guy. Cheering for him to get it together.

Recruiting Coordinator and Defensive Tackles-Todd Bates
Grade: C+
Defensive tackles have been a strong spot of this team for years. He’s doing something right on the field. I’d prefer him to just be over this position and for Brandon Streeter to take over recruiting. Recruiting is starting to regress and thus he receives the C grade.

Offensive Line-Robbie Caldwell
Grade: F
He may be a good and decent man but doesn’t bring much to desire when talking about his tenure. Recruiting here has been better on paper lately but the evaluation doesn’t come to fruition on the field. This has been Clemson’s weakest position group over the last 30+ years and he’s done nothing to change that. From my vantage point this past weekend he literally doesn’t communicate with his guys. He just stands with his hands on his hips. Time for him to retire and for new blood from outside the program to bring some enthusiasm to this position. (Thomas Austin is NOT ready to be a coach at a D1 program).

Wide Receivers-Tyler Grisham
Grade: F
This group has regressed even more than the QB group. They don’t run the correct routes, they don’t block, they don’t high point the ball, they aren’t aggressive, and they have way too many drops. I’d like to see Tyler reassigned to an administrative position under Brandon Streeter in recruiting. He is a good relationship guy that needs more time at a D1 program before coaching again.

Defensive Ends-Lemanski Hall
Grade: B+
Defensive ends continue to be a strong part of this team. These guys use their vision well and maintain their lanes with extreme aggression. We’ll need recruiting here to be maintained as 2018 proved a solid A+ dline can win you a national championship. UGA is doing just that this year. Looking forward to seeing more from this coach and position group.

Cornerbacks-Mike Reed
Grade: B
Once a weakness, this group has become solid with excellent recruiting as of late. Mike is an under the radar coach that just goes about his business. More good things coming from this position group in the future.

Running Backs-CJ Spiller
Grade: B-
This was a makeshift year for these guys. Spiller will need time to prove he can develop a next level back. Looking forward to seeing what he can do on the recruiting trail. This was the one group that showed some improvement on the offensive side of the ball this year.

Changes for 2022-New Offensive Coordinator who coaches QBs, new Wide Receivers Coach, and New Offensive Line Coach.

I disagree with any fan thinking they are in a position to conduct a performance evaluation on any of our coaches. If we were qualified to do that we would be the AD.

Pulse and tenure on Tigernet don’t mean anything to me. I graduated CU in 1984 and was a sophomore during the ‘81 championship season. Then life happened and my job took me so far away from Clemson that I couldn’t stay in touch - this was before the interweb and every game being televised nationally. I was lucky to see one or two games a year on TV. Fortunately I was able to move back to the area a few years ago and immerse myself in all things Clemson again - including watching my daughter take the field as the Tiger Cub mascot for 3 years and 2 national championship games. All this just to say I trust our coaches especially Dabo and don’t think it’s my place to judge them - but rather it’s my place as a fan to support them. Y’all have a good night. GO TIGERS!!

This is stupid that you equate either of those with knowing football. Being an idiot on a football forum for 20 years still leaves you an idiot. And you can know a ton about football but have a worse pulse because you don't always blow hot air up Dabo's backside. I guarantee I have far deeper football experience than you, but it rubs some of the people here wrong because I'm willing to acknowledge the issues.

He's just giving his opinions, people can agree or disagree. It's not criminal. Lol

Even Clemson fans are entitled to opinions. I don't agree with everything he said, but like the fact that he put a little thought into it vs. just ranting.

I remember when Tommy Bowden apologists seethed and raged at ANY criticism of his coaching staff. His blind-supporters aside, most Clemson fans understand the purpose of constructive criticism.

And definitely disagree with wholesale coaching changes on the offensive side of the ball. A lot of recruits come here because of the consistency in the coaching staff. Very poor judgement to throw all that out the window because of one season of missing the playoffs.

I have one coach retiring....

one coach being moved over recruiting and one moved to admin. They're still on staff. The one coach I have leaving is the one that absolutely must. I agree we want to maintain stability but you can do that and still make appropriate moves to get better.

Nov 19, 2021, 5:21 AM

We’re losing recruits from the complete ineptness on offense. The line can’t block, WR’s appear lost and a QB well..nuff said. We’ve seen no evidence of any coaching or player development on the offensive side. I would risk changing things up than having more seasons like this one and the better players opting to our opponents. Not all players make good coaches.

And suggesting that you know better that BV how many DLs to have on the field in any situation is pure fantasy.

flag link

Interesting....did you watch the BC game?

Nov 17, 2021, 8:31 PM

They marched down the field while the QB had all day on that last drive and it almost cost us the game. We had contained them all game prior with a 4 man front and then went to a 3. You are acting like football is rocket science or that fans are incapable of understanding what's happening on the field.

Can only support you so much - Rhett is right that BV is the man.

Questioning BV's coaching is over the line - BV is the top DC in college football. Look for him to be in the NFL in 4-5 years when his sons move on.

Its interesting because if you go back and look at the games

[1]
Nov 17, 2021, 8:46 PM

after BC....he didn't go back to the 3 man front. I think he saw the film and also understood his best chance was blitzing DEs in a definite passing downs instead of a 3rd safety. I love watching the guy make in game changes. He's a master!!

Did you not watch his team move down the field warp speed to set up the potential winning score? Kudos to the D for a great goal line stand that saved the game, but if our D still has a weakness, it is prevent defense.

Our grad rate = 0 on the scoreboard. I’d rather have an offense with non-OJT inbred assistants and win, than a 100% grad rate. Top recruits are going elsewhere, we’re not Duke and hopefully not our goal.

Great post. You are just giving your opinion and supporting the Tigers at the same time. Your evaluations are really good. The offensive struggles will be the same next year if changes are not made. The O line play is the worst it's been in years. The WR play is average at best. Running backs have been good. Then let's be honest about DJ. I've never seen a QB take the snap and freeze like he does. There's no movement, he's stuck in cement. That's coaching. This team can have a special 2022 if the offense can be a little above average. Not sure it can happen without changes to this staff. Remember there are teams with 2 and 3 star players way out performing this group.
I have the confidence that Dabo will fix it.

I think this is a pretty decent evaluation.

DEF agree on Grisham and Caldwell.

I've been critical of Grisham this year and it's 100% justified due to the massive regression we are seeing on the field. I feel we really started to see our receiver play regress in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl against OSU. Our receivers looked weak in that game and this trend continued into the natty.

That area has been exposed, and if you don't believe it you are just not accepting the facts. And I feel it has a lot to do with Scott leaving and Grisham entering.

I'm not bashing him, but the changes there have been majority-wise negative.

And Caldwell, he just isn't engaged and his guys I don't think are PUMPED to play for him. I think they like and respect him. But they don't get fired up, I don't feel, from him. THIS IS CERTAINLY ALL SUBJECTIVE. But your comment about his hand on the hips and no communication doesn't suprise me and confirms what I suspected.

Saying, He supports the Tigers as we all do but Dabo has let the Oline problem live way too long..

and DJ is not able and should not try to be a DW4 or a TL16 in handling the same brain, skillset & talent load that these once-in-an Orange Moon QB’s did with relative ease when playing behind average at best Olinemen groups we had then and now.

And, I concur with the rather weak WR & QB coaching results and would like to see both of those coaches shifted to other responsibilities..

and of course the Oline coach will retire after our bowl game.

Yep, BV is again an A+ coach while I grade HC Dabo a C+ since he recruited & allowed a non-dual type QB to be inserted into this O Scheme and then couldn’t figure out what to do about it in 10 games.

Of course, none of the coaches saw the massive injuries coming week after week and the need to patch up each side of the ball with duct tape & a prayer.

Hey, even with overall crapppy play from the O side (minus good RB play) the Team is 7-3 (losing to the #1, 18 & 20 teams with one being very close and one in 2 OT’s) and a 10 win season is in the headlights if we close as is possible.

GoTiGERs!

Spot on. Grisham and Caldwell have no place at Clemson at all. No debating this, no positives at all, just endless excuses like injuries, tough defenses, blah, blah, blah. Agree Elliot is a CEO, not an inspirational influencer with an iron will to score.

Nov 18, 2021, 1:42 PM

I quit reading at that statement. I hope it was just an exaggeration, because I couldn't disagree more. While I agree that these positions could stand some improvement, I will leave that up to Dabo, who is paid to evaluate them. If you can't recognize their contributions as players and as coaches, then I think it may be a YOU problem.
