Since people think Streeter could be our next OC

Dec 9, 2021, 9:32 AM

what makes anyone think he would run things exactly like TE? He’s his own man with his own ideas.

I would bet if he gets the job that our offense will barely resemble what we saw with TE. IMO anyway.

If he’s Dabo’s choice, I’m All In.

Just for kicks, I'm gonna stir the pot...

What if it's Dabo's playbook we've been running? What if Elliot really didn't have a say? I mean there were some hints to that midway through the season (at least here on Tigernet).

Anyway, I just wish somebody would say for sure, here's the DC and here's the OC now let's go play some football. All the speculation is getting hard to keep up with.

We want to know asap, but there are several things that have to play out. TE's leaving is the first, then it depends on what other staff members go with him and still possibly BV.

Who ever get the OC job I hope they can change up some plays. I’m seeing us go back to Spence type bubble passes and it seems that every one of our opponents has figured out how to defend that play

Not disagreeing but you gotta have speedsters to run the sweep, a shifty QB who can disguise it, and receivers who can block downfield. Otherwise you get caught behind the chains. So, name the speedster, identify the blockers and cross fingers on the QB flipping the pitch that would ensure success.

Dabo is an "O" guy...we'll run the offense that he wants to

Dec 9, 2021, 9:40 AM

run, so if an internal hire they'll know. An outside hire there could be some friction unless Dabo will loosen his grip. I don't think TE had free reign like BV did.

Interesting and exciting times in TigerTown.

If a HC won’t give his OC any freedom, who would want to take that job? I wouldn’t.

You would if you wanted to be a head coach and realize that the last 3 OCs have gotten head coaching jobs (with the assumption that Elliott finalizes with UVA or Duke).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Dabo will give them freedom to run the system/scheme

of his choosing. May make it hard to land an established OC if they aren't willing to learn.

It will be interesting this off year. I think one of the main problems with our O is that DJ never got comfortable running the O...not sure he was capable. He was much better the latter part of the year after TE/Dabo adjusted the O for him. Would love to go back and play some of the earlier games NCSt and Pitt with the offense we ran at the end of the year.

He wasn't any better at the end of the year than the beginning. His stats are terribly in the USuC game. He was all over the place all year. We got better because we finally committed to the run and got some continuity on the line.

a few things to this.........

Dec 9, 2021, 9:49 AM

1. I'm not sure he would look "EXACTLY" the same........maybe he does, maybe he doesn't

2. I think some of the "hiring from within" frustrations stem from not even ENTERTAINING other options. Is he interviewing Longo, or Chadwell, or Brady, or "name your outside brilliant playcaller", or Kitley/Lebby(although NOT options anymore), but a Dabo has Clemson toward the top of College football program-wise.....CURRENTLY............why not at least ENTERTAIN the thought of bringing in the best of the best. If Dabo thinks it's streeter after that process then so be it..........I think it's doing the program a disservice NOT doing that.

3. Since this is a DISCUSSION board I like hearing other's take on the situation(s) of OC & DC. To me, regarding the coordinator discussions a "take" isn't "Whatever Dabo says"........that's not discussing. I'd like for posters to give 4-5 phone calls that THEY would make if they were Dabo.........what's YOUR take.........what's YOUR opinion. The WCCP radio shows are THE WORST on that. They aren't allowed to "share opinions" that aren't in line with Clemson's thoughts.........or they'll be out of the "inner circle"

Re: a few things to this.........

Dec 9, 2021, 9:58 AM

I think the hiring process for OC and DC are very different a Clemson simply based off of what we have been told about Goodwin.

If Dabo thinks he has a mastermind on staff and knows his character, style of coaching, etc then it's an easy slam dunk to take the guy you know everything about vs a guy who has had success elsewhere with more unknown.

In terms of OC, even with more responsibility there isn't anybody touting Streeter as the mastermind behind Elliott who was helping to pull strings and lead Clemson to national titles. Yes, everybody believes Streeter played a role in the offense but he has never been sold as a hidden gem for the Clemson offense.

I am perfectly fine with Dabo reaching the decision to hire Streeter, but I also like the idea of checking around to see what's out there before he reaches that conclusion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Goodwin is half as good as we're being lead to believe...

Dec 9, 2021, 10:29 AM

Then you announce that hire today, if for no other reason than stability, especially with signing day coming up next week. Besides, there's nothing wrong with the D. My only gripe is the whole co-coordinator thing that's floating around, not a big fan of that. Put one guy in charge and if the other gets his feelings hurt and leaves for OU or UVa then so be it. You're already hiring a coaches, what's one more?

As far as offense goes, I think you at least have to give the appearance that you're performing an exhaustive search. There were major issues with the O this year, whether it was play calling, player development, motivation/performace it still ultimately comes back to coaching.

College football has always been about money (at least as long as I've been alive), and now more so than ever. Schools are throwing big bucks at these coaches to come "turn their programs around". With that in mind, I think Dabo needs to change his hiring mentality. He needs to find the best person for next season and not worry about if he'll still be here 3,5 or 15 years down the road. Yes, you want a guy who will be loyal, but at the same time they have to look out for themselves too. UVa is a perfect example, Mendenhall up and decides to take a leave of absence, now most if not all of that staff is out of a job.

All I really know is, there are interesting times ahead. Not just for Clemson but for college football as a whole.

Re: a few things to this.........

Dec 9, 2021, 10:05 AM [ in reply to a few things to this......... ]

I’m not sure why anyone who has watched Dabo over the years would think he hasn’t been planning for this for years. I imagine he has talked to numerous people to get their thoughts on replacement coordinators…we’ll never know, though.

Meaning, I’m sure he is entertaining all available options. If there’s someone outside the program that Dabo thinks will help him win games, recruit well and be a positive influence on the team, they’ll be considered. He probably won’t tell any of us who was considered.

Whoever he chooses will be presented as if they were the only one he wanted, because that’s how Dabo is.

I would turn this around and ask - how do we know Dabo hasn’t entertained those thoughts or talked to some outside guys? Those conversations are generally kept confidential until they reach a certain level and sometimes even then until there is a deal. We don’t know what Dabo did the whole time he was in Vegas or who he was talking to or even that he was actually Vegas the whole time. That would be the perfect setup for discrete meetings. And DHood wasn’t in the bushes in Vegas.

good point. I mean the Jeff Scott and TE worked for Chad

Dec 9, 2021, 10:05 AM

Morris but the offense got better after Chad left. Chad was hard headed in his tempo and high % passing/run game that it sometime got us 3 and out in 12 seconds. Chad Morris's offense would have never beaten Alabama's defense. They feast on short and intermediate pass attacks. When Jeff Scott and TE took over the used his playbook but added some more common sense to it which produced a more steady qualifed offensive attack.

So yes.. I agree that a new mindset from the same system can be a step in the right direction.

Might want to get his QB's mechanics and footwork straightened out first before taking on more challenges.
