Just curious poll ...

Oct 29, 2021, 10:36 AM

How many football season have you been a serious fan and fully supported the Clemson Tigers?

Me - 35 years

I have to revise my answer... My first Clemson game was September 20, 1975. I was 9 years old. The game was in Tuscaloosa, AL. My family was living in Alabama at the time. My parents were Clemson fans. I was just a kid and didn't have an allegiance yet. I was awash in Alabama and Auburn fans. But, I started leaning towards Clemson in 1981 when we won the National Championship. I started becoming more of a Clemson fan when we moved back to South Carolina in 1984. I went full-tilt in 1987 when I enrolled at Clemson.

I have been a serious Clemson Tigers fan for 57 years. I started going to games when I was nine years old. My oldest brother went to Clemson on a band, ROTC scholarship in the fall of 1964. Our parents kept season tickets for about thirty five or forty years. I have two daughters that graduated from Clemson in May of 2015. Their blood runs orange ?? too. I have walked through the valley of the shadow of death with the Tigers and my blood will run orange to the day I die. Thanks and go Tigers!

That includes four years of high school in Greenville, my time a student at Clemson and as a Clemson graduate in Civil Engineering. I hope to live another 25 years to finish with at least 72 years of supporting Clemson University.

I was born in Greenville and have been a fan for over 40 years. I grew up watching games with my dad (when they were televised) but didn't attend a game in person until I was in my 20s.

I had plans to attend Clemson for college but another college (not UoSC) offered a full ride and minimizing debt was a bigger long-term requirement for me. I regret the missed experience but appreciate not having to deal with major loans. That makes me one of those who is a fan but didn't attend CU as a student.

I've had to reevaluate my approach this year because I'm afraid my vitriolic relationship with the officiating crews has rubbed off on my young daughter and I don't want to spoil her childhood. :P

Re: Just curious poll ...

Oct 31, 2021, 3:36 AM [ in reply to Re: Just curious poll ... ]

I would actually argue that I have seen most of the whiners and trash talkers claim to be Alumni. I would also argue that some fans, such as myself, have been All-In longer than those that happened to get their education at Clemson. I have been a fan all of my life but did not attend Clemson because I went on scholarship elsewhere. I either wasn't talented enough to play for Clemson or didn't have enough exposure (I vote for exposure ??). I actually pulled for Clemson when my school visited DV while I was there. I obviously didn't play football. I see the rationale behind your view though.

It was the 1970's, don't remember the exact year. An Anderson paper, there were 2 at the time, had a picture of a chicken appearing to attack a hurt Tiger in the Sunday paper. As a kid I thought there's no way a chicken can do that to a tiger. So began the hate of chickens and love of Clemson!

Unfortunately, my daughter loves chickens. Both real and those that are squatters in Clemson's other home.

30 years this year

Oct 29, 2021, 12:13 PM

My loyalty to Clemson grew very organically over a period of several years. My family is not native to SC; We moved to Florence (which I'd say is at least 2:1, maybe 3:1 in SCar's favor) in 1979 when I was 5. Neither of my parents were college football fans. I do have a specific memory of watching at least part of the 1981 championship game and rooting for Clemson, but otherwise I was in 4th grade before I became cognizant of the existence of college football in the state. I remember my teacher that year was a Carolina fan. My 6th grade teacher and principal were both huge Carolina fans as well. I still have a poem somewhere that she wrote about "Sir Randall [the principal] and the Knights of Cock-a-lot" in 1984 for the principal's birthday.

Somewhere around 7th grade, I started to lean towards Clemson. This was helped in part by going to the Biology Merit Exam the University held for middle schoolers, and a Science and Engineering summer camp I attended after the 8th grade. That was actually the last time I stepped foot on campus until freshman orientation.

I actually owned and wore, mostly for gym class, a hand-me-down Gamecock shirt from 7th-9th grade (I grew up quite poor; close to 90% of my clothes were hand-me-downs.) As my lean towards Clemson as both team and college choice grew, I eventually got rid of it.

My high school principal was a HUGE Carolina fan (but an otherwise amazing man) and he had a hilarious tradition of good-natured bragging/lamenting during morning intercom announcements about the game in the week leading up to, and the Monday after, the Clemson-Carolina game. My freshman year was 1987 so I remember him being in a really good mood that year, but he wasn't so lucky for the rest of my high school career, lol. (He ended up marrying the librarian, who was a huge Clemson fan.) My favorite history teacher and my favorite math teacher were big Clemson fans as well. Also my HS gym teacher/head football coach was Mike Watts, father of Justin Watts--a serviceable WR for us in the late 90's. (Justin is an Asst HC at App State these days, I just discovered.)

I didn't become a *solid* Clemson fan until I was accepted into the University. But even then I wasn't what I'd consider a rabid football fan. I'd never attended a college game of any sort.

I joined Tiger Band and the 2-3 weeks of practice before the first game are what groomed me to become the fan I am. By the time First Friday rolled around, I was chomping at the bit to see my first game. I was unbelievably excited. The pageantry, the energy, the enthusiasm of First Friday was incredible.

I remember the *exact* moment I became a rabid, die-hard Clemson fan, though. September 7, 1991. Clemson vs. App State. It had to be 95 degrees outside and 120 degrees at field level. I was in a wool band uniform and had just paraded nearly a mile to the stadium. I was hotter than I had ever been in my entire life, and we still had to march pre-game. The veteran band members told me, "don't worry about playing. You're going to be overwhelmed. You have never experienced anything like what you're about to experience. Just worry about remembering where to march so you don't mess up the formations, and you'll be fine." Pre-game went fine--Orange Bowl, Tiger Rag, Washington Post, National Anthem. No problem. A pause for the Pledge and a prayer and some other pageantry.

Then the drum major's whistle blew and as we struck the first note of Orange Bowl, the volume and energy in the stadium swelled noticeably. We marched to form the tunnel for the players. The last note of Orange Bowl echoed off the stands and a split-second silence cut through the stadium. I had hit my spot and turned to the crowd; I hit my first note of Tiger Rag, the cannon fired...and my entire world turned into a delirious, frothing, raging chaos of orange fanaticism and passion and NOISE like nothing I had ever heard before in my life. I could barely hear myself play...I could barely hear myself THINK. The surge of adrenaline almost physically lifted me off the ground. That. Right there. The first note of Tiger Rag...THAT was the exact moment that I became the fan that I am today.

The memory still brings tears to my eyes and a race to my pulse, 30 years later.

I played every note of pre-game and halftime, incidentally. I take great pride in that.

Saw the first game in 1959, Nov 21st vs Wake. Won 33 - 31 scoring with less than two minutes left. Wake QB was Norm Snead who had a 16 year NFL career passing for more than 30,000 yards. The next week, watched the Tigers defeat Furman at Sirrine stadium 56 - 3. Missed games during 1967 thru 1970 seasons while in the USAF. Had season tickets from 1975 thru 2007, UR Row F, 22 & 24. IPTAY member from 1975 till today. That seems to add up to a season or two.

1975... Clemson was the only team most of us cheered for in the household. It helped that they were Orange as we came from Syracuse area where comparatively the football was less than stellar and the Tigers were on their upswing in the later 70s.

Attended many events on campus during my HS years as part of AG programs.

Weathered the many ups and downs since then and have no qualms calling issues as I see them.

We have been Clemson fans since 1970! Loved our Tigers so much we got married in a candlelight ceremony at 8 pm on a Friday night. That caused quiet a commotion because two of the groomsmen were assistant coaches for our high school football team. They had people stand in for them at the game. They got there at halftime and took over!! We spent our wedding night in a house on Lake Hartwell and went to the game the next day. The Tigers put a whoopping on Western Carolina!!! Best day ever! Let’s go Tigers!!

Went to Clemson from Minnesota in 1995 and have been a fan ever since. Been a season ticket holder since 2015. Never missed a game when I was in school and managed to make it back a few times a year since I graduated. I am active duty military, so I did miss a bunch of years when I was deployed.

My worst year as a fan record wise was 1998 when we went 3-8, but we did beat USC when Tommy West was carried off the field.

Ironically, Brad Scott was coaching USC in that game and the next year, in 1999 when we beat USC in Columbia, we carried Brad Scott off the field in Williams-Bryce.

48 years proud years. My parents took me on my first visit to campus during highschool and I graduated in CU in 1980. Although we live 250+ miles from Clemson I lost count long ago of the number of games we have attended. Have always supported Clemson during the good and bad and will continue to do so. Unlike the fair weather fans some of us know I wear my clemson colors more during year such as this than our championship years. Go Tigers!

39 years. One of my earliest childhood memories is watching The Tigers play with my dad. Happy have been here for the good times, the bad times, the nail biters, the mess ups and everything in between. I have had my heart broken numerous times, but not as many times as I have been proud to call myself a Clemson Tiger fan!

Since 1988. Grew up in the ATL so GaTech Basketball was the $hit before college. CU BSIE Graduate (1988-1995), Adj Prof (2020-current) & now a PhD Student (2021-current, what the hell am I thinking?). Being a Clemson Fan is more than Football wins & losses. Don't get me wrong, I like it when we win on the gridiron and the losses make me mad as hell some times. Yesterday in Death Valley, I had a tear in my eye multiple times because I love this place so much. At the end of the night I was a happy old man after having the privilege to see another win in person. The University gave me more than I can ever repay. It turned this lost young punk into a man...
