Just 'cause I've seen it referenced several times re:testing

Sep 2, 2021, 10:00 AM

And not starting a thread to debate whether vaxed students should be tested or not, but have seen several posts calling out Clemson's leadership.

The decision to test asymptomatic vaccinated students wasn't really Clemson's decision.

At the beginning of the summer, there were different protocols in place for vaccinated vs unvaccinated. Middle to end of summer, SC's atty general sent a letter to College of Charleston, who was also going to have differing protocols, that it was "illegal" to discriminate against unvaccinated students, ie requiring stricter protocols for them. I would assume that because Clemson's protocols changed very shortly after, this impacted the decision.

Perhaps the better option would be to only test students with symptoms? After all, big organizations like Michelin, BMW and just about every other business follows basic common sense rules by only testing when symptomatic. Why do the liberal egg heads believe testing of students (players or not) who exhibit no symptoms is a colossal waste of time.

The university is testing in house. That allows them to do it for much less than say a BMW, Michelin, etc. Don't believe this 1% hype. many people are being found positive who have been vaccinated. My wife and son (both vaccinated) are currently positive with zero symptoms, but they're both healthy people. Whats probably closer to the truth is of the people hospitalized for covid 1% have been vaccinated. This is what the message should be: GET HEALTHY. If you are obese, have heart disease, diabetes, COPD, etc , take notice: If you get covid the chances of death or complications go thru the roof. Put down that Bojangles! If you think people who are asymptomatic cannot be a carrier, you're just plain wrong.

CofC does not test asymptomatic students, period.

It was still Clemson's decision to do weekly testing, which is insane.

If you think college kids give 2 craps about quarantining when they all live in apartments together due to a positive test, then you are kidding yourselves.

These mandatory weekly tests are not helping the Covid situaiton.

Clemson leadership still came up with this awful idea.

I am both, and seeing what I am seeing now, for the time being weekly is a good idea, unless Clemson wants to go back to all virtual

This is BS you posted to fit your preferred narrative.

Clemson chose this.

ok dude. simmer down

True IMHO, campuses should right now be doing some sort of surveillance testing. Hospitals are full, local medical resources are being stretched beyond the breaking point, beyond.

Clemson's choice would be frequency, or not to at all, but can't choose to delineate vaxed vs unvaxed in protocols.

Here is the unanimous opinion from SC Supreme Court dated 8/17/21 which led to state supported universities being allowed to implement universal indoor mask mandates. The opinion arose from a SC professor suing the the SC Attorney General and his claims made in the aforementioned letter.

https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/maskmandatesouthcarolina.pdf

The referenced budget proviso does not mention testing (just vaccination and masks), so university officials may have been able to require regular testing of unvaccinated students vs. no testing of vaccinated students. ACC only requires testing of vaccinated athletes if there is an infection cluster (assuming the team meets the 85% vac mark). Here is the MAG report from the ACC.

https://theacc.com/documents/2021/8/19/Report_of_ACC_MAG_8_4_21.pdf

If Clemson was a public or private company, they can legally require vacs for employees without question (outside of very limited instances of medical and religious exemptions).

The state of SC has the well established power to require all citizens to get vacs under their reserved police powers outlined in the United States Constitution and US Supreme Court precedent Jacobson vs. Mass. 1905. Political will is another matter altogether.

BTW I completely understand the universal weekly testing requirement given the high level of spread, extreme demands on HC system, safety of student population, etc. Just saying that it was not a legal requirement to apply universal testing based on what I have read.

yep
it is a quagmire

personally, i would support weekly testing for nonvaxed and monthly for vaxed. Knowing vaxed people can be infected and spread, but have read a few small studies suggesting that this happens in a smaller % of vaccinated vs unvaccinated (would seem to be common sense)

Need a JD and MD degree to figure this out, and even then.....
