I never will understand why folks get so bothered by someone else proselytizing. Only thing I can think of is maybe they have some doubt or guilt and it tugs at that in them. For me, I’m good either way. To each his own.

huffer,

I will never understand people's need to proselytize. If you have found the joy of life - just live it. If it really is special, people will see it in your life and ask you about it.

Then there is the question as to why an all-powerful deity needs little ole you to spread the word of her supremacy. Wouldn't it be more efficient if she used all of his powers to do that herself

The reason we tell people about Jesus is because He commanded us to in His word! I can tell from your post that you really do not know much about Christianity or Jesus! And you are correct that I should live my life before you so you can see my good deeds and good attitude and mostly see Jesus! I can’t force my faith on you but because I truly believe the Bible then I must share the Gospel story with everyone and every where. John 3:16 For God so Loved the World that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever Believes in him shall not perish but will have everlasting life!!! That’s the Gospel and that’s the Good News!

65,

My questions remains: Then there is the question as to why an all-powerful deity needs little ole you to spread the word of her supremacy. Wouldn't it be more efficient if she used all of his powers to do that herself.

Secondly, I was raised in the Lutheran Church and I understand plenty about the bible and god. I have read and understood the bible for quite a while now (see the Twain attachment). And that is why I do not believe in your mythology - that and the complete lack of evidence.

Re: Don’t be so easily triggered… you don’t have to click on it

Jan 9, 2023, 9:08 AM

You are right that God doesn't need us to spread his word. A god that creates the heavens and the earth does not need anything. He does desire that we spread his word as stated in the Bible, but you know that. You have faith (without evidence) to call the Bible mythology but don't extend the same privilege to others to have faith that the Bible is true. When someone shares the Gospel with you, please understand that they are saying "I care about you" and take it as a compliment. They are just following God's commandment, "Love thy neighbor as thyself". Hoping you have a good week.

chasn,

I do not need any evidence to NOT believe in something. I call the bible mythology because there is no evidence that it has divine origins.

When someone shares the "gospel" with me they are being presumptive and condescending. They are taking the position that they have some superior knowledge about life - and again without any evidence of such. If christians truly cared about their neighbors, they would respect them by doing for them rather than preaching at them.

There is plenty evidence in nature and in the very Word of God preserved in the Bible. The Jews saw numerous signs and refused to believe and murdered Jesus, who is God. The empty tomb is evidence; the Jews and/or Romans could have stopped Christianity instantly by producing a body as they had tremendous incentive to do. It is highly unlikely that numerous first century Christians would have died for a lie. I could go on. The human race was plunged into sin by Adam’s sin, and all are dead in their sin without God’s grace. Just as many died through Adam, many shall be saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone for the glory of God alone. I have prayed for Gods grace to come to all in this thread.

Romans 1:18-25

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

[18] For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. [19] For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. [20] For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. [21] For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. [22] Claiming to be wise, they became fools, [23] and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

[24] Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, [25] because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

2 Corinthians 4:3-6

[3] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. [4] In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. [5] For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. [6] For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Blood was the only way to offer sacrifices in the OT.

In the NT God sent His son as the ultimate sacrifice and the need to shed blood for forgiveness was finished.

OT was before Jesus walked the earth and the NT starts with the life of Christ.

You send yourself to eternal damnation. He provided the means to avoid it. It is an incomplete understanding to say God is a loving God. God is a loving God and He is a just God. His love tempers His justice, but by nature He is just. He is also all powerful and sovereign. He gets to make the rules without your approval.

Yep. I just had this discussion with a Jewish friend of mine too. And I’m a Christian too! I have made the point to so many fellow Christians that god cannot be all owing AND all powerful based on the evidence all around us. Pick one, but not both. Innocent children should never suffer if he is both.

I believe he is powerful, but not all powerful. And I believe he is all loving. But he has limits on the power he has to address some things. Otherwise, he would have addressed them.

The converse to this is to believe he is indeed ALL powerful and allows some children to suffer unimaginable pain and horrors. That is not all loving to me. That would be kind of sick in my mind actually.

So I am going with ALL loving. It helps me rest better at night.

Jan 8, 2023, 10:33 AM

As I’ve grown older and had more time to observe and learn about the universe, it is clear to me that there is a bigger power here in play that we humans really cannot comprehend.

I also believe Jesus did walk this Earth and was probably one of the most forgiving, non-judgemental human beings who ever lived. Ghandi and mother Theresa being two other examples. If he wasn’t the son of God, he was closest thing to it. I happen to believe he was in some way or another used by God to convey what we should try and be for one another. I also believe man has perverted the word of God throughout history in order to co-opt the belief in him to gain power for themselves. That is why I’m not a huge organized religion guy.

I truly believe we have to be better creatures in the way we treat others and Jesus led that message by example. Christianity doesn’t teach killing others to convert them, even though the crusades didn’t abide by that tenet. So overall, I’m a believer in Christ and a higher power God. And I believe we will be held to account for how we treat others while here on Earth in some way or another. I also think there are good tenets in Judaism too.

So that is where I stand on religion. But again, to each his own. Just don’t use religion to judge others. That is one thing that will trigger me. ?

The Crusades were actually to reclaim Christian lands taken by force by the Muslims, not an expansionist conquest.
The same thing happened in Spain, and Eastern Europe. Particularly in the Balkans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The crusades used religion as an excuse for war… that is not

Jan 8, 2023, 11:03 AM

Christ-like. Now the Muslims kind of forced the response because they were saying convert or be killed to the Christian’s which begot the Old Testament Christian response of an “eye for on eye” instead of Jesus’ “turn the other cheek”!

Christians is a broad term used by many religions.

Christ like true believers would not be killing anyone not like minded, land wars possibly. Those still go on today. If we were still at war with those of different faiths would they still not be going on?

And do you not see the difference in the Muslims that are wanting to harm those that are not followers of their religions or Allah. They are still those that are out there doing that today.

Where are these Christians causing wars and were they maybe not defending themselves from those that wanted them eradicated which is still the case in Iran and Iraq.

If you are into history, prophecy and future events lay down your history book and pick up Scripture. It will answer most of your questions.

The evidence is that you're trapped in your way of belief and inability to trust beyond what you can presently perceive in your limited form. Faith is the key to unlocking the door of true spiritual nature & life which exists not just within but beyond your present boundaries. Without faith there is no hope of achieving the transformation you so furiously rail against.

About the only thing that you know about my beliefs and trust is that they do not match up with your mythology. Beyond that you know virtually nothing about me -0 and yet you judge despite the warnings from your own myth.

Spiritual transformation is completely within a human's own power. I am perfectly capable of being good without god.

Faith - isn't that where the thinking stops. ?

Re: Jesus loves ALL of you enough to die for all your sins

Jan 8, 2023, 7:15 PM

NOT judging you to make observations about what you've stated....and Jesus is NOT a myth.
Our beliefs don't match up but that has no bearing on whether you or I or anyone in this world is good or bad; those are both subjective characterizations based on differing socially accepted norms.

It seems that my belief in life as a spiritual existence within a physical/material framework represented by our bodies is what you're at odds with. Maybe I misinterpreted what I read from you?
I believe our spiritual beings are eternal, like energy which cannot be destroyed just changed from one form to another. Yes our finite bodies will return to the earth ("meet you in the dirt") but our spiritual selves will have been transformed into a new state when our life force leaves the physical body.

How faith works I can't explain but I know it requires believing in a spiritual God who is beyond my personal power & understanding but definitely NOT without evidence.
I don't see this as mysticism or myth but rather an educated choice based on my limited personal knowledge and experience in this present life. However, I do believe that once I've broken free from the limitations of my physical body, spiritual truths & realities beyond my current comprehension will become evident...that's my faith in practice.

For me this requires a spiritual God, a greater presence than myself alone, to be possible and I willfully accept that.
You stated, "Spiritual transformation is completely within a human's own power."
This seems to be your main point of dissent if I understand your statement correctly.
We all have freedom to believe what we do.
Peace.

Jan 8, 2023, 11:00 AM [ in reply to Re: Jesus loves ALL of you enough to die for all your sins ]

When sin was introduced into the world so was pain and suffering. We try to rationalize things with our own minds and God tells us His ways are not our ways. Isaiah 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways.

There are things in this world that we will never comprehend but he does not expect us to. He simply tells to to repent of our sins and follow Him. Repent is not the I’m sorry but from the Greek where it means to turn away from one’s sin.

Some have faith that the world evolved into what it currently is and some believe God created everything we see. Everyone has faith it’s just faith in the God or there is no God.

God is in all of us but what we do about that is the difference. Some remain agnostic and some believe there is something bigger than ourselves.

I look at my own conscience as proof not that the good Lord needs any proof. You can see His work as soon as you walk out your front door. My conscience lets me know when I’m doing something or saying something that I should not be saying or doing. Why is that? If there is no God why would it matter when it comes to right and wrong.

The history and current state of Israel is HUGE when reading the Old Testament regarding prophecy as well.

Seen the mention of different religions and religion is just that religion. The Bible mentions no Catholics, Presbyterians, Baptist or Methodist. It’s simply putting your faith in Jesus the Son of God and asking Him to forgive you for your sins. The Bible mentions that it’s so easy that children can understand. Man like everything else they have ever touches messes things up.

There are some great apologetic reads out there as well if that kind of study interest you.

My confidence in evolution is backed by tons of scientific evidence. Faith plays no part in it.

I have a conscience, too. I have it because we, as humans, have agreed on certain things being right or wrong - and we understand that our collective lives are better when we mutually stay within those boundaries.

So your conscience from what humans have decided is best? If we as humans decided it would be better for us to kill the handicapped and homeless because our collective lives would be better without their burden, would your conscience be okay with that or do you think there would be something objectively wrong about it?

Dawg,

But we collectively have not decided that, have we. Humans can be good without god.

Although there are some who violate our norms and laws, the vast majority of humans want to get along with their fellow human beings (& understand it to be in their best interests) and establish such rules as will allow them to do so to the greater benefit of all.

Yes, WE collectively decide what is right and what is wrong - and so far we are getting better at it over time.

Tobias ..... it is not about being good. It is about being saved. There are enormous numbers of people in the world who are better than I am, as judged by human standards. Certainly our goal is to be Christ-like, but we all fall short. Even the apostle Paul, whom may have been one of the finest men who ever lived called himself "a wretch", because he knew he was a sinner and fell short. As a Christian, you certainly work to do good, but your success at being good is not what saves you. I understand yours and others perspective and suffice to say that I do not have all the answers. There are things in the Bible that I do not understand, but I know they are right and it is my comprehension and understanding that is the problem, not the Holy Word.

Links,

Might I respectfully ask - if you don't understand things in the bible, how can you be sure that they are right ?

And again respectfully, if god chooses to reward people based on their worship of him rather than on their human efforts to be good - what does that say about god ?

Re: Jesus loves ALL of you enough to die for all your sins

Those are certainly good questions, but the Bible and being a Christian is not a list of things you can do and can't do, but a conditioning of the heart. If it were for instance merely a list, such as the Ten Commandants, then I guess my dog would be a Christian, as he has never violated any of the commandments. Certainly there are things that you should not do, but that is not the whole story. The Bible does not contradict itself, so it is the entire theme that is correct, and cherry picking parts of it and twisting the interpretation does not mean that a portion is not true. I think in some cases it is merely a misinterpretation.

Even as Christians, we are prone just to pick out the parts we like and ignore those that we don't like or even disagree with. Does that make s us wrong or the Bible wrong. If you, or anyone can show me the parts that are wrong, that would make you the ultimate authority. So personally, I choose to believe that the Bible is correct and it is me that is wrong.

Yeah, and everyone who is against abortion is also ok with people trying to prosecute the doctor of a 10 year old who terminated a ra.pe pregnancy. You see how stupid broad generalizations like that sound? I have never heard anyone pro-choice that said they were ok with a full term termination it's completely made up. The only person I have ever seen mention this is you. You don't have a leg to stand on so you resort to gaslighting and outright lies to try and make your point. Nineteen states and DC allow full term abortions. The former governor of Virginia stated that a child should be birthed, and then appropriate care given after consultation with the mother and doctors - abortion after birth. Your example of a ten-year old does not include the fact that almost none have the ability to conceive. You provide a highly unlikely scenario vs millions of healthy babies being exterminated for convenience. At least depict the situation honestly.

That story has repeatedly been debunked. It was wishful thinking by christians.

Debunked? There was a book written by a lady that claimed

Jan 11, 2023, 10:33 AM

to have had conversion conversations with him on his death bed. She claimed he did. Other books have given opinions that christian conversion doesn't line up with what they believe happened. At the end of the day it comes down literally to a "he said, she said" type situation. So the fact that you say it's "debunked" is just your haughty hopeful opinion.

Truthfully there's no way to know with certainty. What has been agreed on by all is there was conversations about eternity while on his deathbed. No one knows but God as to how those conversations ended. The happy ending of course is that it ended with a man redeemed at the 12th hour. The sad ending would be he doubled down on his stubbornness to prove his life work was not for naught and he died prideful and closed off.

God is good all the time

Bullcrap. When I visit the grave of my 6 month old son the reality that slaps me in the face is that your "god" is not loving AT ALL, much less all the time. If your "loving god's" way of showing ppl that he loves them is by taking their baby from them, I want NOTHING to do with that despicable excuse for whatever tf kind of monster he is. Furthermore, if your "loving god" is all knowing, then he willfully chose to suddenly, abruptly and without any forewarning whatsoever end my 6 month old son's life knowing the tailspin it would send my life into. He knowingly ended my son's life fully aware that I would attempt to take my own life multiple times bc the indescribable pain and misery and ever present reminders of the death of my son ripped a gaping, permanent hole in the threads of the fabric that comprised my life. What reasoning could this "loving" god possibly provide that would justify doing that?!?! Don't give me the "oh but he could have known that down the line something horrible would happen to him or he would have become critical ill so he was saving him from the pain and suffering of that" BS. If that were the case, why would a "loving" god knowingly create children doomed to a future of such severe suffering that he knew it would make it necessary to turn right around and remove them from the earth so soon? How could a loving god be okay with watching the parent of this child literally spend nights sleeping on the ground next to his grave? Watching the parent of this child, even after all this time, at the most random moments...standing in a grocery line, paying for gas, in the middle of small talk with total strangers standing in line at the pharmacy...suddenly feel like someone gut punched me to the point of knocking the breath out of me while those familiar waves of pain overwhelm me like I'm right back standing in the hallway at work being told that my son was gone and I quite literally begin sobbing uncontrollably with these strangers staring at me like I've lost my mind?

If any form of a god exists, he/she/it is a cruel, twisted, heartless monstrocity with the single most massive case of narcissistic personality disorder ever to exist.

And anyone doesn't like or agree what I've said or feels the need to "save me" or "witness to me" or tells me I'm doomed to an eternity in ####, miss me with the self righteous word vomit. Whatever "####" you think exists that I would be sent to? I'm there already. It's called "life" after burying your child.

Since we are all sinners "lack of thereof" is not an option. But first you have to acknowledge that you are a sinner. Before that you have to recognize what sin is. I suggest reading Mere Christianity, by a former non-believer and brilliant man, CS Lewis.

I must say, I certainly do not blame people for not believing, because once you believe you are committed and can no longer ignore sin and although a huge weight is lifted off your shoulders, you have an obligation to respond differently to it.

God didn't cause the injury. Humans who have the ability to make choices chose to play a game where they constantly pummel each other. Just like our children God loves us no matter how stupid we are. God made the human body and he only gifted a few to be able to take care of it and help it recover when it gets injured.

memorable lines... shaking it boss, failure to communicate, I can eat 50 eggs, etc. I think maybe The Godfather is the only movie with as many quotable lines. Tobias27772

Decent is a state of inertia. My faith motivates me to be proactively good. Faith based organizations make up over 80% of private charitable work and donations to homeless, food banks, medical assistance and disaster relief. That’s more than decent
