Javan White reason for leaving

[3]
Mar 29, 2019, 11:19 AM

I noticed during the Wichita State game that Javan and Amir Simms were arguing at one point on the court immediately after Javan was subbed into the game. A play had not even happened yet.

I have no idea what they were arguing about and I have no idea which one was on the correct side of the argument.

I am simply saying this to say that maybe Javan is leaving the program because he wasn't a great fit for the desired culture of the team by coaches and players.

Maybe Brownell asked him to leave but is being nice about it and letting Javan announce a transfer.

I know "maybe" and "if" are huge words, but if Javan isn't a good fit and Brownell is ok with him leaving before next season, then it could work in our favor.

In football, fans assume that players either leave because they aren't good enough or because they don't fit the culture.

The immediate assumption in basketball has been that Brownell can't hold onto players.

Seems like Brad has always had players that argue and fight after instances during or after games. Maybe from what I have heard they get a long with each other well but I detect this might be the result of bad court chemisty. That result is a product of program culture from the Head Coach.

That is why I am not going to get too excited if we fill our open spots with good graduate transfers or recruits that get released from schools where their coach leaves.

Will the players mesh with each other and have real good court chemistry? Brad has had this problem except for maybe one or two years here. That is a direct product of his program.

Arguing and such during games and in locker rooms after games is not an uncommon thing in sports.

It is not always culture problem but sometimes related to highly competitive young people struggling to deal with adversity.

We usually hear one or two instances per season of football players arguing or fighting in practice and occasionally see some disagreements on the sidelines during games.

The odd thing that really stood out to me was that it was immediately when Javan walked onto the court. There had not been a bad play or miscommunication to create the emotions.

Again, I have no idea what was said or who was in the wrong, but the situation was not something you see everyday.

What do you expect from this Brownell program? He takes no ownership of his program, his players or the mediocrity that is his trademark. He is Tommy Bowden all over again- maybe even worse. By the way- Radokovich is to blame as much as anybody for uncalled for contract extensions(twice within the last 3 or 4 years). As Elvis would say-" We're caught in a trap with no way out" !

My suggestion was that maybe Brownell urged the kid to move on or at least gladly accepted it and your response is that I should expect this because he takes no ownership of his program?

I'm not sure if you just totally missed what I was saying or if you are just itching to find new ways to bash Brownell but you kind of went in a different direction with that one.

Also I don't understand you (or others with the same comment) that DRad was wrong for giving an extension.

Sure this year was disappointing and kind of went the wrong direction, but how can you not extend the contract of a coach who just took his team to the Sweet 16?

Good luck getting kids to sign on to play if you don't reward and support a coach who just experienced his greatest success and the school's greatest success in quite some time.

Because...

Mar 29, 2019, 12:36 PM

last years Sweet 16 run was the exception and not the norm.

He had a senior laden team returning and was a preseason top 25 team.

Not making the NCAA Tournament was inexcusable.

Senior laden yes, but we lost 2 of our 3 point producers with no clear ability for offensive production. We were still good, but not as much of a threat offensively and that definitely showed up.

Pre-season rankings never mean anything folks, we know that. It is just optimism of prior success. That is a fallacy.

After nine seasons...

it is abundantly clear that Brad Brownell is NOT to coach to lead this program to where we all want it go.

Make the change.

It's long past time.

Question for you.

Would you prefer to make the tournament every year and never advance or would you rather make it once every 3 or 4 years and win a game or two every time we make it?

I'm not trying to prove a point with this question but I think people's answer determines their stance on Brownell.

Obviously everybody would like to make the tournament every year and make some runs but that hasn't happened in a while so my question is based off of where we are instead of where we would like to go.

You didn't answer my question. You just changed the subject.

Brownell is not doing either of the two things you mentioned..

Mar 29, 2019, 1:09 PM

so either one would be an improvement over what we have.

Actually prior to this season Brownell had gone to the tournament an average of once every four years and each time he won at least one game.

If we go again in the next couple of years and win a game or two then he will stay on that pace.

I'm not saying that's all I want out of basketball.

I'm just asking if you would be happier with Brownell if he was on the other side of the bubble this year and in 2017 but was getting bounced in the first round each time.

Personally I don't think there is much difference in squeaking in to lose vs making the NIT.

I would rather make a run if we get there to get the program a little recognition and maybe get a higher level of recruit interested.

I don't think there is much difference between this year's St John's team and Clemson. I also don't think it is a knock on the program that St. John's was chosen instead of Clemson. Arbitrary committee choice.

If best is the standard...

we should expect to be in the NCAAT eight out of every ten years minimum.

Personally, I could live with five NCAAT appearances every ten years.

Best is the standard in football.

That's Dabo's thing. Do you have a clue why????

Because he set the bar at Excellent and achieved it. Any good manager knows that. You raise your standards in measurable, attainable increments.

Any idiot who tries to go from Mediocre to Best is going to have to fire everyone, including the players. You sound like Jakey: "we think we're just as good as they are".

point producers seeing as Grantham missed all of February and March. From the Sweet 16 team, we lost Devoe. Grantham played no role in that run

And we couldn’t replace those 2 guys because brownell can’t recruit!!!!

Re: Because...

[2]
Mar 29, 2019, 1:16 PM

I think this is the most fair and reasonable knock on Brownell.

I don't totally buy the idea that he can't coach in key moments or develop guys.

What he really struggles to do is get the level of player that is ready to be a major contributor in his second year in the program after being a key role player as a freshmen.

Only a couple of these guys are needed every other year or so.

We always have a senior or two who have big seasons in their final year.

The difference between this season and last season is that there was nobody ready to be a major contributor after the two seniors.

When Devoe and for most of the year Grantham were the go-to seniors, there was also Thomas, Reed, and Mitchell who were major contributing underclassmen.

This year we had Thomas and Reed. An injured Mitchell was less effective and there were no young players who were ready to be major contributors.

We were short 1 or two young guys who could help all the time instead of once every 3 or 4 games.

I want to clarify that being on the court for a lot of minutes does not mean contributing. I mean getting consistent production.

flag link

You need to quit misrepresenting this

Mar 29, 2019, 6:43 PM

Grantham missed the last 2 months. The team played it's best basketball without him down the stretch. From the team that made the Sweet 16, the only loss of consequence was Devoe.

Donate had a great 20 games, but he was not there when it mattered most

And not on the Sweet 16 run. With Devoe, we were excellent without Donte. Would have been better with him, but we were good enough to reach the Sweet 16 without him

Re: Because...

Mar 29, 2019, 12:45 PM

The extension was signed after Brownell went to the Sweet 16.

DRad did not give him an extension this season.

Again, I'm not sure why people don't understand why the extension was given.

At the time, the extension was very well-deserved.

Again, if you don't give an extension to a coach with success, then recruits will see that something isn't right and will look elsewhere.

It doesn't matter if it looks like a bad idea AFTER this season.

It was absolutely a good decision at the time.

flag link

Yes...an extension is often necessary...

Mar 29, 2019, 12:57 PM

but a large buyout is NOT !!!!

Absolutely no other school in the country is even remotely interested in hiring Brad Brownell.

You are clearly unaware of Brad's reputation in coaching circles. He will have zero problem getting another job if he wants one.

Coaching circles are fine, but the AD circles make the calls

Mar 29, 2019, 5:43 PM

to find a hire and I don't think that his track record is going to have any AD at a power 5 school calling Brownell as their 1st or 2nd choice. If Brad is released or walks away after his meeting with DRad, I really doubt that he will have a chance for the next bball season to coach a D1 school. Mid major... maybe, but not a primary D1 program. Bryce Drew has a better record making the tournament at Vandy than Brad does at Clemson...

2022 white level member flag link

LOL are you seriously comparing Bryce Drew to Brownell?!?

Mar 29, 2019, 8:40 PM

You said: "Bryce Drew has a better record making the tournament at Vandy than Brad does at Clemson... "

Bryce Drew coached three years at Vanderbilt with the following records:

2016-2017: 19-16 overall, 10-8 in SEC; lost in first round of NCAA Tournament
2017-2018: 12-20 overall, 6-12 in SEC; no postseason play
2018-2019: 9-23 overall, 0-18 in SEC; no postseason play

For his three years at Vandy, he was 40-59 overall, and 16-38 in the SEC. Only 1 of his seasons was .500 or better.

How on earth is that a better record than Brownell? In terms of overall winning percentage, Drew's was .404 at Vanderbilt, while Brad is .571 at Clemson. In conference play, Drew was .296, while Brownell is .481. Brad has only had 1 losing season in his 9 years at Clemson.

Not even close to being comparable.

Well believe it or not, many players transfer because they don't have a choice. The coaches determine in many cases who stays and who goes.
