NC_Tiger_: I understand your position and I don't disagree. But I don't know whether the Justice Dept. will want to take that case, for a variety of reasons which we can get into.
The reason to have the hearings regardless of criminal prosecution is to prevent this from happening again. Now, maybe getting widespread testimony from eye-witnesses, establishing video and documentary evidence, publicizing all of it and creating a historical record won't be enough to stop Trump (or whoever the next Trumpish person is) from ignoring the rule of law. Maybe it requires the criminal conviction of a former president (i.e., Lock Him Up!). But if it does anything to deter and prevent the next attack on our democracy, I'm in favor of it.

One thing T3 and the others keep missing is, these "hearings" are a history, an accounting, an official public record. The fact that they are going unchallenged and Trump and his minions aren't challenging them on any of the particulars is incredibly damaging...and it's going to be even more so when they start facing criminal charges.
All of this testimony that has been made public - and undoubtedly reams that hasn't - is evidence.
It's not just the "court of public opinion" Trump has to worry about here. It's an actual courtroom. There, the current strategy of rightwing media and MAGA partisans - which is to just making farting noises and dismiss everything with a wave of the hand without listening to a bit of it - is just not going to play...and the facts that are presented look really bad for those involved.
On a side note, former Dem big wheel Andrew Gillum of Florida just got hit with fundraising fraud charges that could be a pretty much exact preview of what Trump's about to get hit with in regards to his own 1/6 fundraising - that the funds raised were not used for their stated purpose. I have some doubt the timing is coincidental.

58% of Americans said last Friday and Saturday that Trump should face criminal prosecution, up from 52% in April. 60% feel the committee is "conducting a fair and impartial investigation" up 50% since April.
In 2000, George Bush won the election due to just 540 votes in Florida.
In 2016 Trump won Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, and thus the election, by 79,646 votes.
In 2020, just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin prevented a Biden-Trump electoral college tie.

There were 120,000 protesters at J6; thus far (17 months later), there have been ~ 800 arrests.
That's ~ 0.7% ... i.e., less than 1% for those J6 junkies who struggle with math.
Some of those who were arrested did not do any violent acts, didn't break and enter, anything like that. Instead, some of the people who wore clown suits and made fools of themselves have been imprisoned.
