Leave it to Jack

Mar 23, 2013, 5:06 PM

to run us out of a big inning against a crap team and a crap pitcher. First the steal attempt and then he gets ANOTHER runner thrown out at the plate.

Shows up after two Clemson wins...

Complains.

I like jack but he is too reckless on the bases in my opinion. I would like to see some comparative facts versus other teams. Maybe my perception is wrong.

Hey Meatball... Aggressive baserunning has its pros and cons

Mar 23, 2013, 5:14 PM

A slightly worse throw, and that's a run. In the age of less offense, you have to manufacture runs when you get a chance. Duke made a good play that time. Steals don't always work, but Duke has been making a lot of mistakes today, and the decision was not bad. Any idiot can wet their pants and whine AFTER things don't work out, but for the most part, our aggressive baserunning and Duke's shaky fielding has helped us in our 2 wins.

There is a difference between aggressive and stupid. That play at the plate was stupid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No it wasn't, your post is stupid. See how easy that is?

Mar 23, 2013, 5:20 PM

It was a fraction of a second from being a run. Had he not sent him, the next guy would have not RBI'd him in anyway.

Plus, have you seen Duke's fielding this weekend?

Jack has made some bad calls sending people this year, but that was not one of them. It's not always someone's FAULT when the other team makes a good play. They BARELY got him.

Re: No it wasn't, your post is stupid. See how easy that is?

Mar 23, 2013, 5:23 PM

Barely or not, they got him and we didn't score in the inning despite having runners all over the place.
That is a common theme this year. He already cost us the first game against Virginia because of bad decisions, and this game looks like it will go that way too.
If you're happy with having to win games because Duke's defense is bad, that's your choice. But Duke is a terrible team, and it shouldn't take that for us to beat them.

Ok I don't want to act childish and be as rude as I want to be here... but this comment is extremely...misguided.

Part of a coach's job is to take advantage where he sees weakness. Right? Well if a team is having struggles in a certain area and the coach doesn't try to exploit that weakness then that coach is doing a bad job. Right?

Your comment makes it sound as if exploiting weakness is somehow pathetic or undesirable. I can't help but think that to be extremely odd and backwards.

And it DOES matter if the play is close. If the play is extremely close then the call isn't stupid unless it is late in the game and we had a better chance to win by being conservative. That doesn't apply here.

If you want to complain about past calls to send the runner, then that would be a much easier argument to make. The call about which you originally posted was not a bad call.

Mar 23, 2013, 5:33 PM

My point is it shouldn't take that for us to beat them. Yes we should take advantage of their defense, but we shouldn't be in close games with them.
That's not misguided. That's a fact. We shouldn't be in close games with terrible teams.

Mar 23, 2013, 5:17 PM [ in reply to Hey Meatball... Aggressive baserunning has its pros and cons ]

Leggett has been doing this long enough to not get so many runners thrown out. Its his job as the base coach to send them or not and he is waisting way to many runners. That could have been a really big inning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In some other games, I would have agreed with this, but that

Mar 23, 2013, 5:21 PM

last one wasn't a bad call. You saw how close it was I hope.

Mar 23, 2013, 9:22 AM

For me, its not so much that play but the fact that that is the 5th one this year i think that has been thrown out at the plate.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well the timing suggests that this last play was part of the

Mar 23, 2013, 5:25 PM

complaint.

I think it is a reasonable complaint to say that Jack's base-running coaching has been less than ideal this year.

Though I think it is unreasonable to suggest that last call was "stupid."

Jack's record 1238-701. Melclem 0-0. Have to go with Jack here folks.

Well, i'm betting Melclem hasn't been coaching college baseball for 30+ years either.

You're right, but anyone who has watched baseball for any time can see how far our program has slid in recent years.

I'll be honest, They are doing better than i thought they would this year with all the young players. Basically broke even against 3 teams in top 15 (6,8,12). I'm just sick of all the wasted base runners.

Middle of the road ACC program. Never thought I'd say that.

What i don't like the most

Mar 23, 2013, 7:46 PM

Playing Boulware both ends on a double header. Jack is going to hurt our chances by wearing him out like he did Kieboom. Five games in five days and next week it will be five in six days. Wrong on many levels.
