Does Clemson go to the SEC or Big10?

Jun 30, 2022, 2:37 PM

I don't think a third conference is going to be a good spot to land.

Which would be more beneficial to the conference and Clemson -- the Big10 or SEC?

There are limiting factors to go to the Big10 for Clemson (AAU), so we'd have to get that covered before targeting the Big10.

We should request to join the SEC. It's going to be the "megaConference." And with their next TV contract, SEC schools will receive in the neighborhood of $100 million per year. The same will be true of the BIG 10, at least for the time being. So the 1st year's payment will more than offset the $50 million it will cost us to get out of the ACC. And after the 1st year, we'll be on even footing with the other football powerhouses. The handwriting is on the wall. We won't stay competitive in the arms race on ACC money. Whoever negotiated a contract running till 2035 should be drawn and quartered! IPTAY is unique and has gotten us this far. But if we're going to stay up with the OSU's, Texas', Oklahoma's, USC's and Alabama's of the world we're going to need a huge war chest. I'm not sure IPTAY can keep us there given the handicap of being in the ACC. Go Tigers!

the SEC is the natural fit, geographically and culturally.

That's the best two reasons to go to the Big10. Remember, this is all about money. The markets Clemson and FSU bring are already covered in the SEC.

Geographically not good for B1G. Travel to Nebraska, Iowa, Minn, Wis, Mich. Be a nightmare for Clemson fans traveling like that. I Wouldn’t mind, since some are relatively close for me to travel but good grief traveling from SC to all of those, no way.

Smiling Tiger® You really believe so? Money talks. It seems whatever happens, driven by ESPN and Fox Sports, could happen soon. As in this summer.

Clemson, UNC, FSU, and MIA look like the best ACC brands to me, based upon primarily Football not school wealth.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Barring some unforseen change, I think so. I think Clemson

Jun 30, 2022, 8:35 PM

and FSU will be the first to go, they are the best brands overall, and the SEC is a natural fit. UNC certainly has a lot of appeal with their rich basketball tradition, size, and $$$, with the potential for football success, definitely a strong brand. Miami, being in Miami, and with the potential for big time football, would be high up there too, brand-wise. The times are a-changing, for sure, and it will be interesting when the dust settles. I think it will look very different in 10 years.

If given the option, the SEC....It's a no brainer.

Jun 30, 2022, 3:06 PM

South Carolina is in the SEC as well as a lot of our other natural rivals (Georgia, Bama, Auburn) so the SEC makes the only true choice if Clemson has that option. But.. Clemson does not have that option because the SEC does not want Clemson. And I don't think the Big Ten would take Clemson either...not because of football, but other reasons.

By taking who? WV, Cinci? LOL. You can just add a bunch of #### teams to a league and compete. They have to be valid and legitimate football schools, and, well, in case you havent noticed, those now virtually all reside in either the Big or the SEC.

As others have mentioned, AAU membership has long been a stated requirement for Big Ten. Yes, exception was made for Nebraska (former member). It has long been known that UNC is a big target of Big Ten. Duke, UVA, Utah, Oregon, Colorado, Cal, Arizona and GA Tech are all AAU members, who could be potential Big Ten targets. Tech gets them the Atlanta tv market. Clemson’s best move is joining the SEC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Does Clemson go to the SEC or Big10?

Jun 30, 2022, 10:14 PM

I dont know what planet many of you inhabit but in the real world of football, money and politics Clemson will never receive an invitation to join the SEC. Please, What does it bring? Why are you needed? You certainly are not wanted. Minor TV market, $50-100 million buyout to exit ACC before 2035, small alumni base and that doesn't begin to deal with the veto that UGA, USC, Bama and others will quickly exercise if any vote of the current members is ever taken. It requires 75% approval of current members to extend an invitation and other than ego and pride Clemson adds no value.
Texas brought 25 million TV viewers and Oklahoma brings more ground and gobs of financial backing. The SEC will look for expanded geography and more eyeballs as it brings in 2 NC and 2 VA schools to form the first 20 member super conference. Mr. Sankey plays 4 dimensional chess while your ACC leadership studies their navels.
Tell us, what value does your admission deliver?
With no very clear answer you best start now to look elsewhere. If an elsewhere still exists.
