Flopping/Faking Injuries solution
Sep 9, 2013, 3:53 PM
|
|
It's difficult to tell if someone is faking an injury; unless it's blatantly obvious to the referee. Even then, if the ref throws a flag for delay of game for an evident fake injury they are gonna get raked over the coals publicly. Solution: Given player safety is of the utmost importance, when a player goes down on the field they must set out a minimum of 4 plays to ensure the injury is not more serious. Of course teams could always send out their scrub players to flop but for that play there will be a weak link on the opposing team. It’s not perfect but I think it’s a pretty good place to start.

They need to make it a rule that if you have to stop play for an injury, you have to be cleared by a third-party trainer. NCAA makes no promises as to how long this may take - if it's a legitimate injury, better to be safe than sorry... If you can get off the field on your own with no play stoppage, you can see your own trainer.

"If you can get off the field on your own.." No, that won't stop the faking

That's what they do now. Just pop up and run off after stopping the game. For safety, they should sit out that possession and really get checked. You should be able to take a timeout to avoid that though.

it is better than what we have now that depends on the honor and integrity of coaches and we all know how that is in the SEC.. they are not called the Southeastern Cheating Conf for no reason!!

I'd go more than that

1) Adopt the NFL rule on subsitutions. If the Offense subs, the Defense gets a chance to match personnel
2) If there is an injury that requires the clock to be stopped, only that player can be replaced. If the teams want to sub others they can take a time out.
3) If there is an injury, that player can not come back into the game until there is a change of possession or a time out called.
They aren't just faking injuries to slow down the game, they are faking injuries to substitute complete personnel packages.

I'm not sure how I feel on #1 (mainly because it may slow down our offense, which is one of the big strengths), but I really like #2 & 3.

if an offense wants to go at breakneck tempo, they shouldn't be able to substitute entire personnel groupings when they are on the line of scrimmage.
The NFL rule has a certain time frame that a Defense has to sub so its not like they could just milk the clock to slow it down.
But its a trade off to prevent the flopping which really does allow the defense to do wholesale subs. The only other thing you could do is prevent the offense from subbing while there are players lined up on the LOS. If they want to go high-tempo then the O has to go with their same 11. Then you don't have to give the defense and opportunity to sub.

Fair point.
Bottom line, if you want to run an up tempo offense, do it with the same 11 on the field to keep same effectiveness.
OK, I'll give you #1 now.

Rule 3 - Section 5 - Article 2 - E "While in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, Team A is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage with the obvious attempt of creating a defensive disadvantage. If the ball is ready for play, the game officials will not permit the ball to be snapped until Team B has placed substitutes in position and replaced players have left the field of play. Team B must react promptly with its substitutes."

Personally, I think any player that leaves for injury should remain out until possession change.

I think is was Zac Brooks, but a Clemson player (on offense) during the SC State game looked like they tweaked their ankle and came hobbling off, fairly quickly. Clearly too hurt to try the next play, but didn't want to stop play.
I agree something has to be done to avoid flopping, but as a defensive player, if something happens when I can't make it for the next play, even if I may be able to make it off the field, I would probably go down.
Someone on this board suggested that the player must sit out the rest of the series, which I like. But it still doesn't prevent sending in a scrub. At least that scrub would probably have to be somewhat involved in the play for it to be believable.

You have to be careful here. What if someone decides to poke Tajh in the eye or some other light injury that might send him to the sidelines for the rest of the series. I'm afraid that this make lead to more intentional injuries to opposing players.

I would agree with this, but we would have missed the great reception by the Vandy WR against Ole Miss. He was hit on the head, was throwing up like he had a concussion, went out for ONE play, and came back in and made a key reception. The kid wanted to play - but he was indeed hammered into the ground and injured.

The ref should ask the player where it hurts.

Then firmly press down on the injured spot to see if faking.
Player actually injured sits out.
Player faking ejected.
