Shannon Sharpe -- Ajou Ajou

Mar 20, 2021, 10:42 PM

The logjam at WR, and the Amari Rogers comments that Ajou is going to "be a monster" got me thinking. TE's come in a lot of shapes and sizes. I am not short cutting Davis Allen who has blocked and received with dedication and earned reps, but if Ajou keeps growing, he may grow into a TE.

But Ajou came in at 6'3" 218. How big is he now? We've briefly seen Ajou's raw physicality. Shannon Sharpe's NFL listed size was 6'2" 228. Very close to Ajou.

And don't want to discount Ajou backing up Ross in the slot. The young man's a load. Can't wait to see him on the field which will enhance Clemson's physicality. Go Tigers!

It’s not easy to get down on the line and block

Defensive ends. I don’t know how well he could adapt. You never know, I’d like to see us use a TE more. Galloway still isn’t the best blocker

I think this is the call.

Great size advantage for sure but I haven't seen a guy be able to do both consistently since Dwayne Allen and he wasn't a burner by any means.

I guess it's a good problem to have we'll get to continue watching him grow into his role this fall and beyond ??

We need to figure out what the secret sauce was when Leggett was playing TE. It sure wasn't blocking by the TE, but we could flat out move the football in those days.

* Was the OL so much better at opening holes then as compared to now so we didn't need great run blocking at the point of attack by the TE to gain yardage at will?

* Were the WRs so much better then than now so the defense was afraid to play run support and the slot and RB ate up yardage?

* Was it that Leggett was so good and quick in the slot that he could eat up nickle/dime backs over the middle?

* Was our offense so new to other teams that they hadn't yet figured out how to stop us?

So, is it a question of improving what we've been doing through talent and coaching - or is it a question of the need for our offense to evolve?

I've said it many times here, but I'd like to see us develop a 3-TE set. There could be some nasty RPO action developed for that type of offense, with a lot of misdirection mixed in with QB/RB power.

I think one guy who gets seriously overlooked during some of those great running games was Garrett Williams. He was the best blocker we have had since...hmm yeah hard to say it's been so long. That kid was a really good run blocker in two TE sets. As to the Sharpe comparison to Ajou I thought the same thing myself last week. Shannon was a WR at Savannah St but clearly his success as a TE in the NFL shows it can happen. it will require disciple and dedication, but a lot of blocking comes down to want to and nastiness. Ajou Ajou has the Size and frame and would be a MONSTER mismatch on LBs from the start. I personally think it might be HIS best move as I feel he will finally put it all together his Junior year as he is still learning the game in many ways. Ok, so does he replace EJ? Ngata or Ladson (Who knows right?) does he replace either Collins or Stilleto? And that is assuming we won't have more talented WRs come in over that time.
Right now our best blocking TE is probably Price, but hes not going to offer much more as Allen and Gallpway are he much better past catchers. I do wonder if Lay will ever put it all together as he could be a fantastic contributor as well. Still, I personally love what Ajpu Ajou brings to the table and just want to find ways to get him on the field. Go Tigers!

One of the most underrated players on our 2016 team. Man was a grinder! Loved watching Garrett
