Can someone please help me understand why Penn State

is giving James Franklin a huge 10 year contract at $7.5 million per year?
In his 8 years there, they have three top 10 finishes. That’s pretty good on the surface. But they only have one Big 10 championship, and that was in 2016. They haven’t ever been in the playoffs.
They were 11-2 in 2019, but are just 11-9 since then, including 7-4 this year and 4-4 in the Big 10.
I don’t get it.

Historically Clemson basketball is bad---NO ACC tournament championships--1 regular season championship-losing record against almost if not every team in the league. We have had a few short successful runs but that is it.

This is from a month ago so Mel Tucker is making or will be making a few more bucks. I think Penn State looked around and didn’t see other better candidates, likes the foundation that has been laid, has the #2 recruiting class in the big, and looks like there was a real risk he would get poached this off season. In a few years $7.5 m will probably be the 20th ranked salary with coaches pay inflation.

When I heard it, I couldn't believe my ears. That's a lot of money for someone never to have a consistent top ten team. I had to turn the radio up to make sure I heard it correctly. I think it'll"cost" them in the long run.

I can.
1. That is the way the market is going now. Lock in a coach for a long term deal. Pay megabucks to do it. It's a gamble. But, all hires are gambles.
2. Jimmy Sexton is his agent.

Also, he took over a Penn State program that wasn't doing so well. He hasn't done so well the last few years, but I think we could all see him doing well coming up. They have upside. Look at Dabo.

I am saying Dabo inherited a tough situation and it didn't turnaround overnight, although he did do it faster possibly?? I think in year 3 maybe we were under .500. We were losing bowl games. We were blown out 70-33 by West Va. It wasn't an easy climb to the top for Clemson to become the real deal. In year 6 and and 7 with Dabo we didn't even win our division.

Actually unfinished made a great comparison. If you recall, they essentially received the death penalty with the paterno situation. Psu campus and state college like Clemson. So O'Brien came in a complete rebuild of team and image. Then bailed 3 yrs in which set them back. Dabo actually had a much much better situation that Franklin.
He's in year 8 so just like us, the last couple years set us back too. The only difference is Franklin hasn't had 2 generational qb's. He's also in a much tougher conference.
Has Dabo done a spectacular job, absolutely but if you really want to peel off the orange colored glasses, we've been fortunate to make the playoffs because we had zero competition in the ACC. After our run in 16 and 18, we should be recruiting like uga and Bama but both are leaving us in the dust. We still have holes to fill. Namely the Los.

Honestly, I think it’s because of Mel Tucker’s new contract. Penn State looked around and didn’t see a better candidate, he has his best recruiting class coming in and they were afraid USC or another program would swoop in and hire him up and I’m not sure they could get someone bigger.
When you look at the contract I’m not sure it was a great one for Franklin. Sure, he has a long contract which is good but he doesn’t make “that much” per year especially as we start to go a few years down the road.

Franklin recently switched agents and his boy is doing his job. He’s got the SEC in his hand and 2 of the 4 best SEC jobs opened up; throw in the real USC. Sexton makes the school fear he’s leaving, Franklin makes that awkward statement in his presser about “things are complicated” and fear increases. Bob’s your uncle. Compare to coaches’ terms at peer programs (10 years is the thing now); how much do they have to pay to get Jimmy to leave them alone? (They don’t know that’s a trick question; see Jimbo Fisher). New deal.

They’ve seen life without a good coach and would rather have some security vs worrying about him leaving. He’s a good recruiter and currently has the number 1 class for 22. Lots of factors but biggest is FOMO if someone poaches him, the hole devil they know type deal.

but credit to PSU for sticking with a really good coach. The Covid year is what it is and I can give him a pass for that but this year was certainly disappointing for them. I cut him some slack bc of the QB injuries this year too.
He loves PSU, is an above average coach, can recruit and is a great option in a very tough division. The Big Ten East has some tough teams and its a huge uphill battle fighting OSU every year.
And when you look at records, polls, postseason success....he is really on par with what Paterno did after they joined the Big Ten. To put it in perspective, PSU has only won 1 Big Ten outright title in the 28 years they've been in the Big Ten.

Plenty of Big 10 money floating around. As a percentage of their budget $7.5m a year is not a crazy lot. After all that Penn State has been through I think they want stability. And if you have not already lined up your replacement coach you may be left holding the bag. There are a ton of openings out there now and I am sure at least half are already silently filled. Just waiting for the season to end.
