Hard opener is a good thing!

May 17, 2021, 9:47 AM

Kicking off the season with an early playoff game (hyperbole) is a good thing. Hopefully it can generate an additional degree of focus during the summer. I remember back in 2016 when the opener was Auburn. It just feels like it pushes the team forward.

Hard opener is a bad thing!

I think all teams need one game to get the kinks out. Folks say the most improvement is between games one and two. (I'm one of those folks.) I don't think the best team will necessarily win a hard opener.

It definitely gets the team focused early on in fall camp.

They know they have to come out of the gate spitting fire, or our playoff chances could take a dramatic hit before they even get going.

(Caveat: I think a Clemson team that lost a close game to Jawja and then ran the table as ACC Champs would still get into the CFP. But, it would take away our "freebie" loss. No two loss team has ever made it yet.)

Hard opener is a good thing when your coach is Dabo and your opponent's coach is Kirby.

It's even and fair.

Not necessarily good or bad. And with COVID calming down and the vaccine spreading through the CFB ranks, meaning hopefully a normal summer and fall camp, both teams will have an even playing field. You can argue that the more veteran team has an advantage, which would be great for our defense and bad for our offense. A double-edged sword.

Just remember: every good and bad thing about the early game helps/hurts us and the pups equally. Whether one of the two teams is more prepared for it is entirely up to the coaches, not the circumstances.

Clarification - we are in violent agreement on this point. It is neutral for both teams with some nuance about veteran leadership and such. I mean for the rest of the season. It is a shot in the arm at the beginning of the year. Sets the bar all off-season and can help mentally for the rest of the year... maybe not or maybe not that big of an effect but it is the off-season and I don’t have any real content to think about haha
