Just curious...if you are the ACC Commissioner...

Jun 15, 2021, 10:18 AM

do you tell Notre Dame to either $#!7 or get off the pot.

You're either "all in" in all sports or you are "all out".

What say ye !?!?!

The relationship is working fine. We keep winning ACCCG and CFP games. Would be fine with them joining full time but OK with them staying in for non-football too.

He can do something about Notre Football games prior to 2020
being aired on the ACC Network. Why is a ACC kowtowing to a
school that thumbs its nose at us in football.

There are plenty of good football games featuring ACC members
that can air on the network.

What you got against watching Clemson beat them in the DV monsoon or crushing them in the CFP?

independent, but must play 9 ACC teams a year. And because they are still independent, they could choose their other 3 opponents, just like they always have. Of those 9 ACC games, 7 will be from the Coastal and 2 will be from the Atlantic.

In this illusion, Notre Dame will actually be a full time football member of the ACC, in the Coastal Division, but they would think they were independent.

Re: Just curious...if you are the ACC Commissioner...

Jun 15, 2021, 11:21 AM

Right now, at 14 schools, unless we have a good push to make it 16 or nothing, then status quo is fine.

TO add ND, we would need a 16th IMO, likely out of the north to split into North/South divisions. Basically gives ND a clear path and ND absorbs a lot of the TV market for lesser northern schools. Those options are lean at the best, especially if we consider academic standards. Basically, there isn't a full P5 like team in the NE to draw and thus ANY option would mean some type of downgrade.

Navy - My favorite. AAC in football but Patriot in others. Good historic partner for ND and Virginia (and lol South Carolina). Meets academic standards. Plus Service. Just lacks other sports. Army is a weaker option but still good. I would just as well take Army /Navy as anything. I don't know if they can meet the other standards for other sports.
UCONN/Villanova - What football. Good in other sports. Meets academic standards.
Temple - Weaker athletics and very weak academics for a NE private (like NC State level) but at least consistently below standard across the board.
Memphis, Cincy,

Tulsa, Tulane, Houston, UCF, ECU, SMU, USF dont meet the footprint nor the academic standards.

Nominally, I say any "University of City" or "University of Directional State/ Directional State University" is an non-starter (Like West Virginia ECU, USF). I think UofL has beena failure for the conference and that is why Cincy, WVU, or USF/UCF is a non-option.

So either we poach a unhappy B10/SEC/ or add a welfare school like the options above.

a conference for football before 2036 (?) it has to be the ACC.

I think the ACC has all the leverage it needs, especially since they hooked them up last season.

I wish it was up to the ACC Commissioner alone

Jun 15, 2021, 11:26 AM

The Clemson game at Notre Dame last year was the most-watched game in ACC history. It's not a coincidence; it's providence.

The value ND adds to the conference is inescapable, but the trick is we get one shot----if they go to the B1G, for example, that's that.

I don't think that's likely (i.e., ND will most likely join the ACC if they join any conference), & Notre Dame's administration seems committed to remaining independent. The ACC commissioner has done great at helping us out at Clemson, at least as much as he can (including the bye's), but I'm curious how much the ACC has explicitly campaigned to try to get ND to join. Personally, I'd love to play them every year & particularly for the ACC title.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s a moot point

Jun 15, 2021, 11:32 AM

With playoff expansion, they will have no incentive to join any conference. As imperfect as the present arrangement may be, it’s not going to change.

Re: It’s a moot point

Jun 15, 2021, 12:00 PM

Maybe, but if they joined the Pac 12 or Big 12 they would be favored to be the Conference Champ and a ride into the 12 team playoff.

No conference championship = no bye

Jun 15, 2021, 12:57 PM [ in reply to It’s a moot point ]

I would think that might provide some motivation. If they win a conference championship, they likely get a bye. If they play in and lose a conference championship game, they probably still get in...or at least maybe still get in.

On the surface, I don't like that we allowed Notre Dame

Jun 15, 2021, 11:38 AM

be a member in everything but football. However, after thinking about it more, I do understand it.

The ACC took the view that getting a member like Notre Dame is a marathon and not a sprint. If the ACC told Notre Dame that it's all or nothing, ND would walk. So if we want ND as a football member, which we should, then the strategy the ACC has taken makes sense.

By having Notre Dame as an ACC member in all of the other sports, we've added a school with a great athletic and academic tradition. They have been a net positive for the ACC. Notre Dame has experienced the benefits of being an ACC member. This can only help as discussion regarding football continues.

Last year was an interesting opportunity for Notre Dame football and the ACC to do a trial run. By all accounts, it went well. Given the proposed changes to the playoff, it seems that Notre Dame would be best served to join a conference. And the logical and natural choice for them would be the ACC.

I know a lot of people here despise Notre Dame, but if we're being honest, they would be a great addition to the ACC in football. I hope to see it happen.

Very difficult question for me to answer. They likely will be a part of the final twelve if that is what happens in the championship era. Joining the ACC would help the league more than it would help the Irish. I believe they will stay out of the ACC.

Re: On the surface, I don't like that we allowed Notre Dame

ND is a historic Blue Blood and gets a free bump every year when the polls start (as do schools like UGA, Miami, Texas, USC, Mich). That gives them a leg up to finish in the top 12 as opposed to a team starting at 25.
For many years they had a recruiting advantage as they were about the only team that could recruit nationally. Now all games are on TV and that advantage faded.

For about the last 4 years they have been a top ten team. Book is gone, but I believe they will be top ten this year and maybe for a few years in the future. Kelly has them winning. Right now in a 12 team playoff they have an advantage not being in a conference.

Both ways make sense separately, but ND joining the ACC and having to play Clemson for a shot at the playoff every year doesn't seem like an advantage for the Irish.

Then on the years we play them in the regular season it seems even more disparate. The chance of playing them 3 times in a season wouldn't be impossible, but how weird would that be?
