How does Bowden know that if this was the old conference

Mar 8, 2007, 10:26 AM

Clemson would have 2 ACC titles by now? And what relevance is that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everybody bashes Bowden on the parity...

Mar 8, 2007, 10:29 AM

"excuses." I don't agree with the "what-ifs," but as a life-long Tiger fan, the ACC has not been the same since 1991.

Yeah but its for the better

Mar 8, 2007, 10:34 AM

Had the ACC not changed we may have 2 championships but we wouldn't have nearly the same quality of players. Also, USC would probably be whoopin our ### every year because we wouldnt be able to get 4 star kids to come here and have their marquee game against NC State.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh, I absolutely 100% agree...

Mar 8, 2007, 10:40 AM

it's for the better. It has taken us this long to catch up with FSU. A lot of new people don't realize that FSU "moved our cheese." We were the dominant team in the ACC until they came in.

The ACC is a much tougher conference. My point is people bash Bowden for saying the word "parity."

Saying you would have more conference champs if your conference still stunk is not really saying much.

oh nevermind, the did win one in the ACC. Okay, let's say SC was still in the Southern Conference. Nevermind again.

I can't believe you guys grabbed that one line to talk about. For once, Tommy answered questions. He basically said, "I feel the fans' pain." We are silly bloggers that have a secure career (I hope you do anyway.) If the people we serve in our jobs treated us the way most of you treat TB, most of you would quit. Why don't we ban together as Tiger fans and speak some positive toughts into this man's lfe. With all this negativity, no wonder we can't get over that hump.

As my late GodFather use to say, "speak life and watch life happen. Speak death and prepare to die."

That is the problem with many fans, the jealousy of the salary he makes.

It wouldn't bother us if he earned it...

Mar 8, 2007, 12:06 PM

In 8 years what accomplishment of any value has Tommy actually EARNED?
No national championships
No conference championships
No division championships
No New Year's day bowl wins

It's hard to believe we couldn't get those results for less than 1.2 million a year (plus bonuses).

Much like saying you'll NEVER win one b/c SEC is too tough

Mar 8, 2007, 10:46 AM [ in reply to and if Cu was still in the old Southern conference they ]

Go SEC!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

never heard a Gamecock fan say that...but FWIW, CU has not

Mar 8, 2007, 10:50 AM

sniffed an ACC championship since FSU made it Flordia State and the little 8...now with FSU's drop in their program you have the most recent additions that even if you win a game or two against them, it wears on the team to play tough opponents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Been one game from ACCCG last two years

Mar 8, 2007, 10:51 AM

I call that a little more than "not a sniff"

And don't start telling me that gamecock fans don't use the "SEC is too tough" excuse EVERY November. It's practically the SC late fall mating call.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we've also had a chance to go to SEC champ game going

Mar 8, 2007, 10:53 AM

into our last SEC game.

What is your best finish lately, 4th?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Second in division, same as SC in 2006 (I guess)

Mar 8, 2007, 11:02 AM

You're not going to start comparing the ENTIRE ACC to the SEC East, are you?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

nope, i was never even talking about the SEC or USC, you

Mar 8, 2007, 11:15 AM

brought it up. My point simply was that it is lame for a coach to state that a team would have won more conference championships if it had any easier conference to play in.

I have not read the interview, but i am trusting the poster who said that TB made such a remark by stating he would have two ACC championships in the old ACC.

With regards to Bowden, what he is saying is true. If UM, BC and VT were not in the ACC, Clemson would have won at least two ACC Championships during his tenure.

Does it make Clemson better? No. But, I do think it's an interesting thought for those that think that Bowden has done nothing more than Tommy West or Ken Hatfield since he's been at Clemson.

When West was running the show, 6-5 got Clemson into the Peach Bowl guaranteed. Now, 6-5 is Boise or home.

Just saying...

Please stop posting. I have never heard you say anything positive and i'm pretty sure you should be banished to a desert island. And although you can't know what would have happened, it is an interesting point. To win the old conference, all you had to do was beat florida st, and you had it. we've done that 3 out of 4 now.

I remember winning a National Title in the old conference...

Mar 8, 2007, 12:20 PM [ in reply to How does Bowden know that if this was the old conference ]

While we were in the "old" conference we beat Stanford, Syracuse, West Virgina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Nebraska, Penn State, Oklahoma, Georgia and even "new" conference member Florida State among others. Very good teams in some of the finest conferences in the country. But surely we weren't that good, because, by Tommy's own admission, his mediocre teams could've won titles in those days.

It seems odd that he can believe that the "old" conference must have really sucked when Tommy has hardly had a dominiating record against "old" conference members like Maryland, Wake Forest, Virginia and Georgia Tech.

Re: I remember winning a National Title in the old conference...

Mar 9, 2007, 2:52 PM

I think what Clemson wants, and deserves just once, is a really fire breathing, not even close games, complete dominance such as Nebraska was one year, Syracuse, Texas, USC (the real one), Oklahoma. We have gone undefeated, but not like those teams. I doubt that any team will do that again.

Would any of Tommy's teams beaten any of the Clemson teams in the 80s? other than the 1980 or 1985 edition?
