A lot of talk about Ladson - watch this!

Oct 19, 2020, 12:32 PM

Sure - he has had a couple of drops due to lack of focus on completing the catch. His ability to get that open is special, let’s not overlook it. Also, he will overcome this stretch. See the highlights below from high school, eventually the speed of the game will slow down. He’ll get this thing between his ears worked out. And he’ll make these plays routine. I’m confident (also not the one trying to make the play).

I watched that for :23 seconds. He bobbled that long TD catch while wide open.

That was the first time I saw the same thing he is doing at Clemson.

For some reason, especially when he is wide open, if a ball looks like an easy catch he checks his surroundings just as/before the ball is hitting his hands.

Ladson is a phenomenal player, and I really like him, but he has to keep his eyes disciplined to be elite.

Time for Grisham to earn his keep! This is WRU. Football is a developmental game in college. It’s not about recruiting talented guys, it is that plus giving them the tools to be successful. Let’s see if he gets coached through it. I think it’ll happen. Just an exceptional talent. He did bobble one of those deep throws but he also had some smooth catches in that highlight reel on the deep routes.

The real question is will Trevor keep throwing him the ball if he keeps dropping them?

I’d imagine so. Ladson could be a game changers down the road. I’d have to imagine tlaw and the coaches want the weapon. Now is the time to develop it. Before long, it’ll be needed as a differentiator. A big play threat. Etc. Gotta keep feeding him the ball and get his confidence up to move past it.

I'd be careful about 3rd down passes to him till he shows he's past this. It is like the more open and the easier it is the more chance of a drop. Probably youth and a concentration thing

It's not likely something a WR coach can help with other than reminding him.

My guess is that Ladson never drops a ball in practice because he is only worried about catching the ball and not about trying to make it to the end zone.

Ladson has to create a good habit of controlling the ball all the way to his body. It's all on him.

Respectfully disagree. I played WR (high school ball so maybe it doesn’t count). You can practice things until they become second nature. Take extra reps on go routes, skinny posts, etc. until watching the ball in and securing is completely instilled.

What you just said is summed up by my last sentence.

It is Ladson's job to create a habit of controlling the ball into his body.

Cain had a similar problem at Clemson. He didn't really fix it before he left.

I hope Ladson puts in the work and gets it taken care of quickly.

Step 1: Look the ball into your hands.
Step 2: Accelerate
Step 3: Look around for defenders.

He has a poor habit. The coaches will work it out. I am sure they can see it too.

Maybe the coaches haven’t noticed. It’s a good thing they have us to help! :)

Yep, he needs to keep his attention on the ball over everything around him, that other stuff will happen after he catches the ball. And for a receiver to mishandle the catch, he still takes a lick if a DB is anywhere near them. So catch the ball first, and risk being tackled afterwards!!!

When he was wide open and running free early vs Ga Tech, Trevor over threw him a bit.

did not “lay out” and try to make the catch a la Hunter Renfro.

WR has to help the QB. Everything is not going to hit you in the hands full stride.

It was a catchable ball and a play he simply has to make***

Does anyone have a video of this play? The only time I've seen the play was when it happened, but I came away thinking that Lawrence had overthrown it, and that it would have taken a great diving catch by Ladson in order to make that play. I didn't see it as one that I'd blame the receiver for or especially not credit him for a drop.

It wasn’t so much that he didn’t catch it as that he didn’t give a 100% effort to at least get his hands on the ball.

It was over thrown for sure, but he didn't lay out for it.

A la with every special receiver we've ever had. Nuk, Hunter, Tee, Williams, Ross, just to name a few that made the catch first!!!

He's the fastest player on the team...

Oct 19, 2020, 12:47 PM

If he gets past a defender, there won't be very many, if any, who can recover and catch him.

Amari said he thought he was the fastest until he raced frank haha dude can fly.

Agree. And, Joseph Ngata will help him

Oct 19, 2020, 2:43 PM

I haven't noticed - somebody tell me if not - but is Ladson playing the 9 man? Perhaps not where he is most comfortable.
Ngata's body is a natural fit for the position - I think he is going to be dominant like the guys we have had there before. Perhaps even better after the catch than Williams. Who wasn't bad at all.

Get Ngata back on the field healthy and making plays and I think the competition with someone in his class plus less safeties over top will help him bloom.

He does need to get more nasty about it when the ball is up! And have that; "that's my ball punk why are you even trying" about him!
Outside of that - he is great! And we are going to be dynamic at WR.

Oct 19, 2020, 4:00 PM

Excellent point. Ross even looked unsettled at times last season as they tried to leverage him in other positions. It could be a bit more complex with him not being fully comfortable with the 9.

Don't you think that when ngata comes back in, ladson may see a drop in opportunities? He needs to settle down now.

possibly when Ngata us well. Seems to be still a ways from that

One thing you see with Clemson guys that go pro, Nuk, Sammy, Mike, Hunter, Martavis etc, is that they are so clean with their hands, away from the body, sure and tight.

Frank will get it and in a few years, we'll be watching him in the combine drills, marveling at how quick and sure he is.
