It seems to me the writing is on the wall

for college football. They will go to the 12 team playoff as previously announced and I think that we will see a rotation of the same teams in the playoff each year. I don't think there is any way to get around the fact that the rich will get richer as time goes on. The top teams will be the ones that can afford to buy the talent through NIL. It didn't work well of A&M this year but Jimbo can screw up anything so I'm not sure that's a good example. NIL will turn college football into another professional league where money will buy the best teams. I don't see a way around it under the current rules.

The opposite will be true as Joel Klatt mentioned on Cowherd

Top players will no longer have to go to basically 4 or 5 teams in order to make the playoffs. The usual suspects will no longer be able to stockpile the top talent. With 12 teams in the playoffs, look for talent to spread out among a larger number of teams with talent identification and development being rewarded.

That's very optimistic. The truth is the majority of the talent is going to go where the money is. Southern Cal, Florida State, Miami, Oregon, Texas, A&M, UGA, Bama, Ohio State, Michigan. There's 10 of your 12 team playoff every year. Throw in Notre Dame and the Group of 5 rep. Clemson is going to be hard pressed to compete with the amount of money some of these schools can throw at the top players.

It’s also silly. Players don’t really go where they think they have the best chance of making the CFP. That’s incidental. They go where they think can’t get them to the NFL. That will remain the same perennial recruiting champs as always.

They go to where they think they will get the most playing time and showcase their position. A lot of times going to an Alabama would leave them overshadowed by someone else

Klatt and cowterd have their own self-serving agendas. They get paid (too much) to pontificate on the future of a sport that is rotting from the inside out. It does them no good to rant or drop truth bombs about downside scenarios. They understandably try and come up with plausible silver linings so fans say, maybe it won’t be that bad, this can lead to parity, there’s 12 teams now instead of 4, look at Tulane, maybe my team has a chance…

As others on here have pointed out, most of these players will go where they can get the most money. And this isn’t a situation where it’s garbage universities with all the money and players are choosing between a good school with less money (Clemson) or an IMG type college where it’s only about money. The players can go to good programs, at good schools, get NIL and still pivot to a degree or transfer. Why would they not?

Buy the best and bury the rest. The elites will basically become another pro league. Hopefully, for the true lovers of college football, the teams that will be left out will organize to become what we once knew as student-athlete sports. Young people playing for the love of their sport and a chance at a free college education.
This sport is being ruined for the benefit of the few at the cost of the many. That almost sounds like modern American politics.

posted pretty much the same sentiments after the leghumpers won.teams like them are now really semi-pro,not amateur student athletes competing on a reasonably level playing field.

12 teams opens it a lot more in my opinion. Much harder to crack the top 4 than the top 12.

I agree. I see about 25 teams that will regularly be in the conversation, with the occasional outsider making their way in also. Of course, the normal crew will always be there but it at least gives some others an outside shot that is almost nonexistent now.

Tier 1 (75%+ chance of being in every year):
Alabama
Ohio State
Georgia

Tier 2 (50%+ chance of being in every year):
Clemson
FSU
Texas
Oklahoma
Michigan
Notre Dame
So. Cal.
Oregon
LSU

Tier 3 (25% chance of being in every year):
Miami
Oklahoma State
Penn State
Utah
Tennessee
Florida
Auburn
Tex A&M

Tier 4 (10%+ chance of being in every year):
Cinci
UNC
Wisconsin
Nebraska
TCU
Washington

Everyone else will need to catch lightning in a bottle to make it more than once every 20 years.

I fear that Clemson is Tier 4***

Playoffs equal to finding out who the best team in college FB is, it's not about about seeing how many teams you can find to put in the playoff. IMO, 4 to 6 teams is more than enough to get to who the best team actually is!!!

IF determining the best team is the purpose. It is not. Generating revenue is the purpose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The fix/solution is actually pretty simple...

4

Jan 12, 2023, 2:43 PM

but now that the horse is out of the barn, it's unlikely to happen.

First, change the transfer rules. Every player have five years to play four. If a player feels the need to transfer, for whatever reason, he does so knowing full well that he must sit out one year before being eligible to play. The one caveat, concession or exception that could be considered/made, would be if the head coach is fired, retires, or leaves for another job. No more of these bull$#!7 hard ship transfers.

Second, NIL is not a bad thing if properly regulated and controlled. In order to maintain a level playing field, limits should be placed on the amount of money players can receive. As an example, all 85 scholarship players receive $20,000 annually subject to maintaining their academic eligibility and playing in all games (barring injury), which also likely eliminates/minimizes the opt outs and the tampering.

However and unfortunately, at this point, any attempt to now limit a kids ability to generate NIL revenue will be met with a litany of law suits and civil litigation.

With your NIL suggestion, why even have a scholarship?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I try to save a life a day, usually it is my own.

That's a question for those who advocated for NIL $$$

Jan 12, 2023, 3:17 PM

It's akin to stipends for the players which I firmly support in addition to the scholarships.

Yadda, yadda. All we heard last year was cries that A&M would never lose again because of all the money their boosters were shelling out. How did that work out? Not too good and the football season was another great one. Just either watch the games or don't but football will be football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

where money will buy the best teams

1

Jan 12, 2023, 3:01 PM

Things will change and that will not be all good or all bad.

Assuming that in the past most teams "kinda" adhered to the rules, that is no longer required as rules have changed.

Some schools that had access to vast $$ were not able to freely spend it.
Now schools like TAM, OKS, TCU, Miami, FSU, Oregon, etc can flex their $muscle more easily. That can be a good investment for the schools.

Schools with less $$ will have less chance at obtaining and keeping the better players.

Make no mistake, players will follow the money as few can afford not to.

It's effectively free agency...

1

Jan 12, 2023, 3:22 PM

and that was never the intent of amateur athletics or NIL. Unfortunately, the people who were advocating for NIL (largely politicians and attorneys) never even remotely considered regulating it to be sure recruiting didn't become a wild west like environment of lawlessness.

Re: It's effectively free agency...

Jan 12, 2023, 4:02 PM

Yes, it has become full-fledged free agency every year now, and will remain so until some rules are put in place. It's easy to guess what happened to Trotter. He had a great year, was either offered or told what he was now worth. After a brief discussion with CDS, he's back in the fold. Those discussions are now commonplace. Players have a great year, the price just went up, just like professional sports.

Money doesn’t buy the best teams. It’s more to it than that. If that were the case the Dallas cowboys, clippers and the Yankees would win every championship.

Re: It seems to me the writing is on the wall

What’s amusing and amazing is all the talk by college educated people of 12 team playoffs. The reason I was attracted to college ball over NFL even when I was 10 was the fans should be smarter. I was wrong, so wrong.

If the playoffs expand beyond 8, then all you’ll see is 69-7 games. That’s not fun or even interesting to watch. Plus, 12 doesn’t work mathematically. Just typical ignorant rantings of people with little grasp of anything but money.

Corruption epidemic? Bwahaha, do you live under a rock? It's been epidemic from the beginning of the sport. There's nothing new under the sun, it's just changed with the new rules.
