It might surprise you who has won the

Most football National Championships of teams in the current ACC.

Pittsburg - 9 1915,16,18,29,31,34,36,37,76
Miami - 5 1983,87,89,91,2001
Georgia Tech - 4 1917,28,52,90
Clemson - 3 1981,2016,18
Fl State - 3. 1993,99,2013
Syracuse - 1 1958

If you look at this list, there are only 3 teams from the modern era of football that have won a NC…Miami, Clemson and Fl State. Everything else is from another era of football.

We aren't calling 1990 the modern era?

They both claimed the championship in different poles. Depends on which one you choose to believe.

1948 Clemson had the best undefeated season in the Nation. Should count it as 4th, and John Heisman's 6-0 CU team should be the fifth. But, as you say, modern era is a different game.

I don't even consider anything before 1936 when the AP Poll

Aug 14, 2021, 2:12 PM

started. Three drunk guys sitting in the basement of the Des Moines Register in 1914 playing rock-paper-scissors to name a national champ doesn't cut it. Teams only played a small schedule against local teams back then... there's no way to know if Holy Cross was better than Colgate or Furman or SW Calif State or any other undefeated team. They never played each other.

And the other major poll (UPI) released their "final poll"... get this... BEFORE THE BOWLS WERE PLAYED. It was freaking 1974 before they voted after bowl games. Yeah, you could be #1, get smoked in your bowl game, and it didn't matter. That's why I usually draw the line for the "modern era" as around 1975. Even the southern schools had black players, scholarship limits were imposed to level the playing field, and there were two national polls that were legitimate.

So a lot of these national championships that schools are now retroactively claiming is all donkeycrap. You can find some obscure ranking from the days of reading by candlelight and churning your own butter to self-declare your team nat'l champ for a given year. I think Bama is up to 64 nat'l titles.

I don't consider anything before 1970 legit. There was so much political BS in the AP poll back then.

So? What's the point?

You need to learn how to figure these things out on your own. You’ll thank us later.

If Georgia can bark about 1980 like it was yesterday; why can't Pitt roar about 1976. Old heads like me were at least born(just born) then.

I knew this stat and posted last November regarding Pitt!

For a school with as much history and pride - you would never know it today. Pennsylvania is a good H.S. football spot. You get your OL from western PA and your skill folks from eastern PA and NJ. Simple, LOL!

Be good if Pitt were to have a resurgence one day and all the championships were brought to light again while they were a member of the ACC.

Same with FSU and Miami making a return to relevance.

Clemson, of course, ascending to even higher heights as a program! Between these 4 schools and a possible ND, Penn State addition I see it being enough to keep up.

If - Big IF - the rest of the ACC could have games against other conferences top schools and "win"! Nothing happens unless that happens! One can dream, right?

I'm sure if I was a Pitt fan, I would claim those championships as well. Still a great accomplishment and it's history.

To be honest, it should start in 2014

Aug 18, 2021, 12:08 AM

As a true National Champion. Clemson has won n two National Championships. Alabama three. LSU only has one. Same as Ohio State. Miami has zero. Pitt has Zero. Georgia has zero. Gamecocks have zero but that's still the same...lol.
The thing is, 2014 is the first year we had a national championship that was decided on the field, not in a media room.

National titles in college football

Aug 18, 2021, 8:16 AM

Lists of national titles than include the very earliest days of the sport are bogus and should not be counted. Most years there were multiple champions named and the lists were regionally biased. I think the most reliable tally of national title holders comes from the AP poll. It makes sense to start with the first AP polls simply because that mechanism has been fairly consistent for a very long time.

Here's the list of AP National Title winners from 1936 until the present day:
School.......#...Years
Alabama.....12 1961, 1964, 1965, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020
Notre Dame..8 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988
Oklahoma....7 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, 2000
Miami.......5 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 2001
Ohio State..5 1942, 1954, 1968, 2002, 2014
USC.........5 1962, 1967, 1972, 2003, 2004
Minnesota...4 1936, 1940, 1941, 1960
Nebraska....4 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995
Clemson.....3 1981, 2016, 2018
Texas.......3 1963, 1969, 2005
Florida St..3 1993, 1999, 2013
Florida.....3 1996, 2006, 2008
LSU.........3 1958, 2007, 2019
Army........2 1944, 1945
Michigan....2 1948, 1997
Penn State..2 1982, 1986
Pittsburgh..2 1937, 1976
Tennessee...2 1951, 1998
Auburn......2 1957, 2010
BYU.........1 1984
Colorado....1 1990
Georgia.....1 1980
Maryland....1 1953
Michigan St.1 1952
Syracuse....1 1959
TCU.........1 1938
Texas A&M...1 1939

Some people feel that titles named by the UPI Poll should count. The Coaches UPI Poll named a different champion in 11 years. Those UPI/Coaches poll only champs were named in 1954, 1957, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1990, 1991, 1997, and 2003.But early on the Coaches UPI final poll was taken before the bowls game. FIVE TIMES the UPI Coaches Poll winner LOST their bowl game. I think that made the UPI/Coaches poll incorrect.

So I think the best list is the AP list given above.

Teams now in the SEC have 24 titles.(When Texas and Oklahoma are SEC members, the total is 34)
Teams now in the Big10 have 19 titles.
Teams now in the ACC have 14 titles.
Teams now in the Big12 have 11 titles.
Teams now in the Pac12 have 6 titles.

I don't care much about league's claiming titles. I want Clemson to be the first of the schools now with 3 titles to win another.
