It is not that DJ is throwing Fast Balls, it is because he

Oct 30, 2021, 11:03 AM

is throwing bowling balls. I have never caught a pass from DJ, so I could not say for sure but just watching his release and ball flight, I would imagine his passes feel like a medicine ball or a bowling ball when they hit your hands. Some QB's have the gift of throwing a football that is always a perfect spiral with a high spin rate with the nose ever so slightly up which makes it feel "light" to the receiver and easy to catch. Some modern examples of this talent would be Montana, Tua, Snake Stabler just to name a few. Their passes seem to just float through the air, even though they are sometimes fired with great velocity. Seldom are their passes dropped and receivers will tell you that they loved playing with a QB who throws that way.

On the other hand, there are QB's who throw a ball with less spin, nose down slightly and with a little wobble. Any receiver will tell you that this thing feels like a bowling ball when it hits your hands. Why? I don't have a clue......I just know it is true from experience and from what I have seen and also done as a collegiate QB. Sometime when you have a Clemson game on Tivo, watch the pass in slomo as it leaves the QB's hand. The ball comes out with the nose up with a slight wobble and by the time it reaches the receiver, the nose is down. Also, notice the spin rate. Very slow on our guy. Even at regular speed on the DVR you can see the white laces as they rotate around the ball. If you have an old game Tivo'd with DW4 throwing, do the same thing and you will see what I mean. KB2 was the worst I ever saw because he never released the ball off his index finger. Sometimes his index finger would be completely off the ball when he released it. That was why so many people would say "the ball looks funny coming out of his hand." It did because nobody ever coached him how to release the football. Ask a big league pitcher what happens to a thrown baseball when you release the ball off your middle finger and put no pressure on the index finger? Thus, the Slider is born. John Smoltz was a master at it. Same thing works when throwing a football.

So maybe, just maybe, it is not always the receivers' fault when the ball is coming at you like a Phil Neikro flutterball. It also could answer the question about "Why are we having the drops all of a sudden when we never had them before?"

I really think that TL16 throws a nice ball to catch, and he to has velocity on his throws, but his receivers seem to catch about everything that he throws on target!!!

your ex-D1 QB friend was able to throw passes that defy the laws of physics? Its a wonder he never made it to the NFL or did he? ;)

The little leaguers and high schoolers used to catch

His balls fine.

What have we done to him? We need to stop blaming the kid

I suspect you are closer to being right than people think. There has to be an explanation and it was this type of issue I have suspected for awhile. Doesn’t explain why the receivers caught them last year, but they were also very experienced and obviously elite talent. Interesting post.

DJs mechanics are much worse this year than last year.

I agree with this. His balls do not look catchable. Nose down and wobbly.

More like throwing 90 mph dead ducks. Wobbling all over the place like he kid has never thrown a football in his life… which is odd because when watching his high school film I didn’t notice that.

TPs passes are at least spirals for the most part, like someone with a natural passing motion.
