It has become increasingly apparent with every new thing

I purchase, that QUALITY has taken a long walk off a short pier.

Case in point, I recently bought a conveyor belt type section of rollers, two feet wide and four feet long. This consists of the rollers, which are spring loaded on one end, to allow them to be inserted into the holes, two sections of "C" beam that they mount in, and a couple of cross braces that are bolted in to maintain the width at the prescribed amount. Sounds fairly simple, right. WRONG.

When I opened the box, half the rollers had fallen out of their holes, and were crammed into the bottom of the box. Upon inspection, one of the side rails was bent. And, it did not get bent in transit. It was easy to see, it was bent right where holes had been stamped into it with a hole press. One side perfect, the other side with two separate bends, both where these holes were stamped.

This bent rail had been nicely powder coated, which also made it easy to see that it had not been struck in any manner, the bend was from the factory. So, I had to take the thing apart, cut through these holes, and weld the rail back straight. Now, while taking it apart, I noticed problem number two.

The cross braces were so long, every roller was rolling on its pins, instead of on the bearings that the pins were mounted in, which is how they SHOULD roll, to keep from wearing out the holes in the rails. And, the braces were so long, some of the rollers were just about to fall out of the frame, even after straightening and rewelding the bent side. So, I also had to slice those cross braces in two, shorten them up, and weld them back together.

So, after all that extra work, I finally have what I paid for, a nice section of flat conveyor rollers that I can use as the basis for my homemade heavy duty bottle / rock tumbler.

I'm almost afraid to open the box with the electric motor in it.

That's when you take or send right back where it came from with your feelings of the time and money wasted by purchasing their product!!!!!!😡😡😡😡

ready to work. Also, had very little faith that the next one I received would be any better than this one, so I worked with what I had in hand.

Labor is no longer dependable as it once was. There is no pride in workmanship in many cases. On a much, much smaller scale, when you go through a drive through where I live, you better check your order and your change or receipt. In many cases, one will be wrong.

Here's another complaint--most companies no longer allow free returns.

I have noticed some similar with appliances. Years ago they made appliances to last. Now if you get five years out of a washer, dryer, dishwasher or fridge before something breaks you are living right.

Microwave ovens are tops on that nonreliability list. They

5

Apr 25, 2023, 10:08 AM

make them to fail after a year, or no more than two. And, what fails will be a very small part, but YOU CANNOT GET A REPLACEMENT FOR IT! So, you are forced to buy another microwave. It's a tin foil hat conspiracy.

Yes, they are. I bought an old Hotpoint microwave back around '84 when I worked for Duke Power. This is an old one made from metal. It's heavy as a h a i l, but it works like a top to this day. The only thing that I've had to replace (knock on wood), was the light bulb for it. I'm going to hate the day when it finally does give up the ghost.

not a tin foil hat conspiracy. Planned Obsolescence.

It's a very real strategy. Type that into the google machine read all about it

I had a similar experience with landscape lighting...

In the process of replacing some of my landscape lighting. When I originally installed it years ago, I used several FX up-lights. Although a little on the pricy side, very good quality, well built with a sturdy metal housing. The replacements are plastic garbage but the price is higher.

I have two refrigerators... one in the garage that my parents bought in 1972 that still works perfectly fine. The second one, in the kitchen, was purchased 3 yrs ago... replacing the one that I purchased 6 years before that.... replacing the one I bought 8 years before that.

Thank Capitalism for that. Not going to have sales increases year after year by producing quality products.

An interesting read on Planned Obsolesce would be on the Phoebus Cartel which got together in the 1920's to agree to make the average lightbulb life cycle 1000 hours down from the 2500+ they were currently at.

I am stupid for knowing historical events/facts that are relevant to the discussion at hand?

Most of manufacturing is automated these days so its not the labor that causes the lack of quality. It using plastic instead of metal. Fastener instead of screws or welding. Short term profits over long term quality.

That's why most of us have a refrigerator in the garage that has worked perfectly for decades but the one in the house is replaced more and more frequently.

There was an acquaintance in my hometown whose father

Apr 26, 2023, 7:40 AM [ in reply to Re: It has become increasingly apparent with every new thing ]

had an open shed outside. Just under the eave of the shed is a light bulb, the old clear kind, that my friend said has been burning continuously since at least 1960. (not counting power failures, of course.) He said that bulb company DID go out of business because their bulbs lasted too long. Now THAT for sure is the exception, not the norm.

I’ll take the next step.

It’s NOT that’s it’s poorly constructed….which it is (replace “it” with whatever product you like)

It’s that it was INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED to FAIL. It’s THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT of their business plan.

Absolutely, it’s dishonesty, a seed that is sown from the beginning and harvest time always comes and takes everything from them.

True quality products always last and their products do to when they sew in truth.

I would tend to agree with this statement. For many appliances, even expensive ones, only a one year warranty is usually provided by the manufacturer...for a reason. Friend...if your product is of such marginal quality that it won't be trouble free for 3-4 years, then it's not worth buying. But since all manufacturers do this, you have no choice. Then they will offer you fairly expensive "extended warranties" to cover the next few years, which a well made product would not require.

I recently purchased a new washer/dryer combo and dishwasher, and read many reviews prior to buying. Could not believe the number of one or two star reviews that mentioned appliances experiencing operational problems during the very first year. Seems you just can't win.

A great deal of it is from consumers purchasing by price alone. To be price competitive many companies had to move factories to china, and use cheaper parts.

With advice from 3 different service techs, we paid dearly for a Speed Queen washer. It lacks any bells and whistles (how will we manage without wifi compatibility). Although I have to admit all microwaves are crap, but I couldn't find one made in USA.

Over the last couple of years I've bought, power tools, drill bits, driver set, garden tools, etc all made in USA. You pay a premium, and you have to research, but the quality is soooo much better.

dishwasher. And, even paying for THOSE "high end" brands is no guarantee of trouble free operation. Just had to have the pump replaced on the dishwasher after only two years.

And, this dishwasher, AND clothes washer BOTH seem to require regular "treatments" with separate cleaning agents, to keep them from developing odors. I guess all the modern environmentally friendly detergents can't kill biological nasties like the old time ones.

:(
