Georgia is recruiting at a spectacular level.

Jan 11, 2022, 8:25 PM

They signed 5 Rival 5 stars in the early signing period. This is the level Clemson was recruiting at building our dynasty. We must get back to this level to keep up. We are gonna have to adapt to the transfer portal to add quality depth. I hope this year was just a blip on the radar.

Agree with what you're saying but we haven't recruited like uga since Kirby took over. Mark recruited good character kids for the most part. Not to say we haven't lost a ton to Kirby. Guess it finally paid off for him last night.

We can and have recruited highly talented kids and we've developed better than most. The cold hard truth is we're very fortunate to be in the ACC. Had we been in the SEC the last decade, we might have 1 natty 2018 and possible made the playoffs 1 other time but even that's debatable. Sadly it's going to get even tougher with the new rules. The way we recruit, albeit noble, we can't afford to miss.

It doesn't feel like it's going to happen

Jan 11, 2022, 8:55 PM

The momentum has shifted elsewhere and now NIL presents an even bigger challenge that Lil ole clemson may just not be equipped to handle. Not saying we are going to slip back into irrelevance, but I just have a feeling that our time as a super power and primary foil to Bama is probably over.

I'm very thankful that I got to see this run though.

This is sort of where I am as well. I think our best days are behind us for several reasons…but very thankful to have been able to experience this run.

This is why we need to use the portal.

People forget what got us to here it’s not just top 5 classes it’s the culture that Dabo and staff have created slot has changed but it’s going to be fun to see how Dabo will take us the next couple of years

Top 5 classes and it also helped that Miami, FSU, Florida, Georgia, and all of North Carolina were down during this time.

We have never won because of 5 Star recruits and neither will Georgia, Alabama, A&M or any school. Having a few 5 Stars help but you win with 85 players that have talent, work their tails off and have good coaches. We won that way, Bama won that way and now Georgia has won that way.

Our recruiting is based on in-person success and getting kids on campus.
Covid paused this for a while and it is showing its effects.
I think with the '24 and later kids we will be fine but for these few classes that were getting into recruiting during less in person and less on campus stuff... it is going to hurt.

While indicator, stars are not everything.

Jan 11, 2022, 9:35 PM

Go back and count the stars of our starting units when we won the 2 titles.
We were not swamped with 5 stars.
Some of the stars are awarded based on who is recruiting them, then, they don’t live up to the rating.

ETN - 3/4
Renfro- 0

Per 24/7 ratings

Year - Clemson. UGA
2014 - .8869. .9097
2015 - .8912. .8974
2016 - .9033. .9077
2017 - .9210. .9227
2018 - .9345. .9423
2019 - .8976. .9332
2020 - .9344. .9295
2021 - .9401. .9349

So, your numbers are not holding water. While UGA is recruiting well, they have for many years and were slightly above Clemson when we won the Crown in 2016 and 2018. Go back 2-4 years for the majority of our players.

Don't kid yourself...

Jan 11, 2022, 10:16 PM

To win the the CFB Playoff, talent acquisition is by far the most important
important factor. Stars matter most, and btw service evals are more refined accurate than they were 20-30 yrs ago. Blue chip ratio metric: 50% of 85 man roster must be 4&5*s in order to win the CFB playoff remains unblemished as an indicator/eliminator. Finding the true difference makers of the 4&5*s at the high value positions can tilt the balance but you still need to reach the 50 mark-

Spot on. The more you have, the more "misses" and injuries you can sustain. Plus the iron sharpens iron. Hence why Bama can continue with little to no dropoff. Good assessment.

Regardless of WHY his stance is what it is, the fact that

Jan 11, 2022, 9:57 PM

Coach Swinney has thus far shunned taking any players from the transfer portal has taken some of the "shine" off Clemson's recruiting. It seems to come off as Clemson having a "Holier than Thou" attitude about the portal. The portal discussion and Clemson beginning to finish second again in a lot of these recent recruiting battles is not a coincidence, with NIL also a contributing factor.

Georgia has always recruited at a higher level than Clemson, even for the classes that won the NC in 2016 and 2018.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True, they could go 0-11, name Marcel HC & still have a top 5 class****

Jan 11, 2022, 11:02 PM [ in reply to Re: Georgia is recruiting at a spectacular level. ]

You have to really dig into the numbers though. You can have a 99.99 QB and a couple 96 and 97 WR's and a couple 95 dline recruits that can skew the average of the other 10 88.88 position group, and the 2 81.xx oline. Then you have to dissect and include the actual size of the class. That's how the rankings come into play.

Bama, and now uga the last few years have way out recruited us on a per player rating when you adjust each position.

Actually, in the years leading up to 2016 National championship Clemson classes were ranked 9-20th per 247. 2 top 10 classes. 9th and 10th. We’ve had a top 5 class once since 2016. I’m not sure we’ve out recruited the dawgs on a regular basis. It pains me to say this. But Dabo had a plan and it worked.
