So I hear this sitin has ended

Some thoughts. I think these protesters are making a huge deal out of a little incident (a response that big shouldn't come from a minor incident). As a rising College freshman going to the best institution this side of heaven, I feel that my generation is way too soft, that every little thing offends them. IMO, President Clements has done a great job responding to this situation. However, the demands made by this group have been largely puzzling me. For one, I don't see how a minority group on campus would want to be further separated from campus life when they are preaching inclusiveness.
It puzzles me, these kids should just go to class and learn and if it's professors instigating this stuff they need to be fired (but won't be because of tenure). We should not make accommodations for everyone offended because one goes to a top 25 public university to learn, but also to grow as an individual by experiencing other cultures.

This just reminded me of this quote, "We have all drawn from these hills something to suggest to youth that those over thirty can be trusted and to indicate to those over thirty that the qualities of youth are as sound today as they ever were." From Mr. Sherman's There's Something in These Hills.

I'm way behind on this matter. What exactly were the students protesting, and what were their demands?

Protests, peaceful or not, have been part of our history
Apr 22, 2016, 7:12 AM
|
|
with many serving to awaken our awareness of injustices in our society.
The most effective protests have been those that weren't self-serving but rather arose out of a genuine concern for the common good. Thus, it is important that participants understand that quality has to be their guiding principle.
Relying only on reports, my view of this latest protest at Clemson is skewered, for while there appears to be some validity to their complaints, much unfortunately seems to scream self-serving...a surefire recipe for failure. Inclusiveness is important, however, those who profess a lack of such must make certain they themselves are making every attempt possible to be included. Likewise, those who claim an offense must truly be offended rather than giving in to a fad by a small group.
I have always supported a right to peaceful demonstration, while also believing quality has to be paramount. Hopefully, our students will always ask themselves if their actions will serve the common good.

They are meeting 4-6 of their demands with the saddest one being doubling the minority faculty here by 2025.
Sad day when reverse racism and job discrimination wins.

It shouldn't matter what race teaches a student chemistry or physics.
Clemson has 83 percent white students with the biggest minority being African American. Shouldn't we have a faculty that matches the racial makeup of Clemson? Quotas are bad and result in taking less comptent professors who in tern decrease the quality of the Clemson degree for me and my class and the people that follow me.

Does this mean that we will actually start recruiting WHITE players for our BBall team by 2025? Or still have any WHITE players on the FB team?
Asking for some WHITE friends that are continuously discriminated against.

Will that widen the gap between minorities that enroll and those who graduate?
Does anyone think that white professors are more apt to fail a minority student than black professors would?
Are these kids complete idiots?
Do they really want something other than control?

Yes it is. Like I've noted, you go to a university to learn and experience other walks of life. If one is not happy at Clemson, transfer, no one is forcing to keep them there. Also, there is one currently on campus http://www.clemson.edu/centers-institutes/gantt/ .

would be making those kind of statements as if they didn't know how their generation felt about it things. Unless that is of course your parents homeschooled you and tried to hide from the world. Which in turn means you will be one of the most wildest freshman at Clemson

Would Have Loved To See A Counter Protest
Apr 28, 2016, 7:20 PM
|
|
Quadrupling their numbers and shutting those clowns down. Back in the mid-eighties when I was a CU I would have been in that protest long enough to miss one class and my dad would have come and un-enrolled my smart ### and had me working some menial job. That group of entitled brats ruin the historical context of sit-in and protest with their childlike divisive demands and I truly hope none of them graduate from Clemson. They lessen us all.
