Is there any reason we shouldn't be winning like Virginia?

I try not to overreact. I have heard some good things about the direction Brownell is taking the b-ball team. But what makes Virginia better than us? Should we not expect more from our team?

I'm kidding. Theoretically they could pull from the DC area

which is a hotbed, but they don't. Joe Harris is from Washington, the state. Akil Mitchell, the second leading scorer is from Charlotte. Geographic location is not why they are better.

I thought I had heard about a new arena. Just wondering how much that would help us as we considering remodeling Littlejohn or getting a new place. That might be a big difference maker.

The talent base isn't that much better than ours, besides

their best players aren't from Virginia.
They have better facilities, but that's their choice and our choice. No reason we can't do something about that.
They have a better trophy case. True, but we gotta start somewhere. Let's commit to changing that.

If we accept all of that, and/or don't commit to changing it

then we have conceded defeat and accepted mediocrity in basketball. I'm not ready to roll over just yet and say we can't compete.

Again, of UVA's top 7, only 1 is from the state of Virginia

while one is from MD. The rest have come from well outside their locale. Their success can't be attributed to the available local talent, so that is not a reason for them being better than us, and it's not unrealistic to think that should not be holding us back either.
I'm not sure it's unrealistic either that we could have better basketball facilities, even if we don't have as much $$$ as UVA.

if you can't put the ball in the basket. Clemson desperately needs somebody that can stretch the floor.

More confidence will help. More players will help.

Age and depth.
We're young and not very deep. In fact we're younger and thinner than anyone in our league.
Confidence is one of the biggest keys to the game of basketball. Confidence when you're younger is usually not as high as when you're older. You need confidence to shoot a basketball. Guys usually improve as they get older and gain experience. In most any walk of life really. Then, when individuals gain confidence, then so does the team as a whole.
Depth is nice to have too. It's nice to have some older guys, who have been around the program and the coach for 3 and 4 years. Everyone in the ACC has more of those guys than us.
When we can fill up the roster with additional talent, have more balanced classes, ,gain experience and confidence, then we will be a much better basketball team.

I think it has something to do with Thomas Jefferson and pergolas. Obviously we can't out recruit that.

Some of it may just be the Virginia coach has been there longer (I think). Be interesting to see if we're still seeing this same thing next year.

UVA is older and deeper.

They have 2.5x as many juniors and seniors, and they have 5 more players on their active roster than we do. We have 13 total players on the roster, 11 of which are freshmen and sophomores with two of them out for the season. We got whipped at UVA, but we whipped them in Clemson.
It will be neat to see the improvement as we add some depth and get older.
