The portal is sorta like purgatory before you get to your final destination. Once the transfer is complete, you have reached your destination.

Not really. Not for D1 schools. Wouldn't use purgatory as that implies a negative connotation. In 2018 it became mandatory to go through the portal to transfer. Even if a kid knows he wants to transfer from school A to B, he notifies school A he wants to transfer. They initiate the process and enter their name into the portal.

Say if a kid wants to go to school B, they can call school B and say they'd like to transfer there but it's illegal (supposedly) for school B to respond to the kid until they officially enter the portal. I think that's what you were asking.

Off topic, but it sounds like we need a new skipper heading up our portal manager. Reference article on another website.

Anytime a college player changes schools it’s a transfer. The portal is simply a tracking database for players who want to transfer. So two separate things
