I have a solar gate opener that works okay

small panel connected to a car battery ...
use it to get the riding mower from the backyard to the front.
It works.
For entire house power, I understand that solar is still stupidly expensive with startup costs.

Last person who came around for solar

said it would pay for itself within 4 years. With a 2 year warranty.
So if a hail storm came up somewhere after year two, I'd be ######.

2 yr warranty did you leave off the 5

A residential solar energy system connected to the grid in Virginia will typically pay for itself in 8-10 years, depending on where it’s located. Considering that solar panels come with a 25-year warranty, and have a 30-50 year design life (depending on manufacturer), that basically means that after the first 10 years they’ve paid for themselves.

My house has trees over the entire lot.

The area facing SW is all Corp property, meaning I can't take down trees.
1 company bugged me enough I made them come out and spend 2 hours of their time for them to tell me I don't have enough sun exposure.
Haven't heard from them again.

I live on the perimeter of our neighborhood. House behind me

is a rental, and is not in the neighborhood/HOA. They put up a huge freestanding solar panel in the back yard, about 10 feet from the fence that separates our yards. From my yard, we stare directly into the back of this 10 foot tall, 30 foot wide monstrosity. I don't know the owners so have no idea how it's working out for them. I plan on planting a row of cypress trees or something to block that view.
Another neighbor down the street had solar panels put on his roof, and after some initial quality problems and hassles with Duke, he raves about it now.

We almost pulled the trigger earlier this year but the contract that was sent for us to sign was very different than what the sales guy promised.

I got some in the yard. About seven years now with no complaints except the payback time is longer than they try to tell you. I figgered on that and 14-15 years still seems like a deal with rates going up and up might shorten that time. I don't think hail would damage them. I think my insuance would cover that. It will lose some efficiency over time but it should last much longer than the 25 year life expectancy.

Electric bill has been way down since I got them. Nice little check every couple of months for selling the power credits, plus the rebates. Hasn’t been bad so far.

I have some on my dock oldest is maybe 15 years old. They do great. I have no electricity there. I use them to recharge my boat's 4 trolling batteries, light the dock up at night, and to pump water to my mators.
The problem for larger users is the insane cost of the batteries which have to be replaced from time to time. I think it would be difficult to ever break even.
On the other hand, if the grid goes down, solar will be very handy to have. Even with what I have, could run some things like laptops, phones, lights - for ever.

Home systems don't usually have batteries.
They just pump power into the grid which offsets your usage with the electric company.
The electric company doesn't want power in houses when the power is off because it might make wires live when their people are working on them.
If you want power when the electricity is off, get a generator.
