Is it Old Main or is it Tillman Hall?.............

May 12, 2022, 9:19 AM

Notice how some of the cameras on the Clemson Webcams site call the clocktower building Old Main and others call it Tillman Hall? Which is it officially now?

I remember all the wrangle a few years back about changing the name to Old Main but then it seemed to fade away. I'll always think of it as Tillman Hall.

Officially Old Main now

But I'm so used to calling it Tillman, it will be awhile before the new name sinks in.

I dont believe Clemson is empowered to change the name of the building without the approval of the legislature which has not been given to my knowledge. Personally i believe it should be Old Main but dont think it has happened.

I think that's why this issue faded away - because the......

legislature never took any official action on changing the name.

It doesn’t have to ever sink in.

You can call it Tillman Hall forever, like most people will.

And guess what…
No person of any color will be harmed by it.

On that, we also need to educate people who Tillman really was.

Yes, he's instrumental in the founding of Clemson University and the State Government in Columbia actually giving a poop about the Upstate.

That being said, he was a truly horrible person with some awful views/beliefs. His own quotes speak enough for themselves, I won't post them here but just search "Ben Tillman quotes" anywhere and you'll see what I mean.

I personally don't believe someone that abhorrent should have a building named for him, but the school did so to honor Ben's son back in the 50s IIRC.

Teaching all of Clemson's history, good and bad, should be the approach. At least a lot in the history department believed such - they use Tillman Hall as a teaching point to talk about the less savory parts of our school's history. Acting like this didn't happen or like Clemson's early history was all kumbaya is doing the students and community a disservice. Gotta learn about it, warts and all.

I prefer "Old Main" because that was the original name of the building. But I accept that it'll take an act of God to get the state legislature to vote to change it, so I figure using it as a teaching opportunity like the history department believed is the best course of action right now. They do the same with Fort Hill and teaching about the slaves present at the plantation, I don't see why they can't do the same with Tillman/Old Main.

you mean the original name...it was built as Old Main

State law precludes changing the name of a state monument

May 12, 2022, 9:36 AM

Without approval of the state legislature; which isn't likely to happen any time soon. So, no there hasn't been any official name change.

Heritage act has only been around since 2000. Clemson’s BOT should have unilateral say in what its buildings are named.

An old friend from my church, who finished in 1949, always called it “The Main Building “. I’ve only heard “Old Main” recently.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. I think “Old Main” is a recent invention.

May 12, 2022, 10:41 AM

Apparently it was simply “The Main Building” for many decades before being named for Benjamin Tillman, controversial former SC governor who was instrumental in pushing through the legislation that allowed the state to accept the bequeath of Thomas G. Clemson for the creation of the college.

(Some of you will get this.)

Back on subject ... I call it Tillman, and everyone I say that to knows to which building I am referring.

penal colony; it’s much more accurate. Dem folks in Jawja are too high class to let something be associated with Strom cause they’ve got no skeletons.

Old Main works for me. I can’t support racism. I don’t believe in “Curses”. I just want Clemson to beat usc every time in every way.
