Is Dabo and staff elite recruiters/closers or not?

Feb 5, 2013, 2:01 PM

Ill admit im disappointed in the way things have gone lately in recruiting. Seems we were set up for a bigger finish with the big bowl win and who we had left on the board.

Im on the fence on this subject of elite recruiter or not for Dabo and the staff. 2011 was an incredible finish by the staff. Coming off a 6-7 season and still able to land Steward, Watkins, Bellamy, Anthony etc..

2012 was a class that i felt was solid with Blanks and Carlos Watkins but there were also several misses on players like Gurley and Marshall to Georgia. Ronald Darby to Fsu.

2013 is looking like a repeat of 2012. Good class. Several misses that couldve made it great. Lawson. Robinson. Fuller.

So i ask if Adams is a miss and goes to Auburn but we do surprise and land 5 star Alexander, do you consider Dabo and staff elite recruiters/closers?

I still consider them closers also....

Remember 2012 we got into the game on some of those guys very late in the class and we almost landed them.

This year was similar because of transfers. We really could have recruited larger numbers earlier in the year and closed a little stronger. Instead every miss is a complete loss with no backup options. Plus if we land Alexander on top of the late coming of Baker it is still very solid closing effort.

I think this is a question you ask after national signing day and not before....

I think the loss of Napier hurt a lot

Feb 5, 2013, 2:04 PM

our last few years have been a little down imo. Not bad but not where it was when Napier was here.

Depends on if they close on Alexander, Baker, Crowder, etc.

Feb 5, 2013, 2:06 PM

Yes losing the people you named hurt, but we are bringing in what we need in this class. D-line, secondary, o-line.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You clearly need an addition to your recruiting staff.

Re: Is Dabo and staff elite recruiters/closers or not?

Feb 5, 2013, 2:08 PM

I tend to think that they are elite. While Clemson is a very special place and sells itself in many ways, there are some disadvantages as well. Clemson will never have the budget of the giant state schools with legions of alumni donors. Clemson will also never have the built in hype machine of the SEC. So, for Clemson to hold their own and even best some of those other schools is an accomplishment to be proud of.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo's a very good recruiter.....

Feb 5, 2013, 2:14 PM

but I think too many clemson fans have blinders on and think that NOBODY else can recruit in the world of college football

he's had an off 2 years as far as "closing strong".....missed on a number of big prospects the last 2 years down the stretch. Solid class, but I will think of this one as what coulda been

I also think you're seeing just the begining of the "SEC take over" in recruiting

RN (likely Ole miss)
kamara (riding the coat tails of RN)
daniel (i think Ole miss)
lawson (auburn)
adams (auburn)
robinson (UF)
clark (UF or OSU)
probably missing a couple too

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By 2016, every single 4 and 5-star recruit

Feb 5, 2013, 2:17 PM

Will go to the SEC. By 2018, they will have lost their last non-conference game, ever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i know that was partially in jest, BUT regarding the 4/5star

Feb 5, 2013, 2:24 PM

guys

at one point few weeks ago I counted

the SEC had about the same amount of 4/5star guys committed as the Big10,Big12, and PAC12 COMBINED

something like SEC 104 4/5stars......big10,big12,pac12 109 4/5stars...........obviously that's changed slightly, but not too far off

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Out of those you mentioned--Lawson, Robinson, Fuller--

Feb 5, 2013, 2:19 PM

we didn't "miss" on any of them. Lawson and Robinson were both committed elsewhere when we got involved. Both wound up reaffirming their original commitments. Fuller was VT-bound from the start, if you ask me. That's a legacy commitment. So far, there aren't really that many "misses." Jenkins never would have committed if he had received a UT offer early.

There's the Nkemdiche fiasco. Just a weird situation. If Adams goes to Allbarn, I'll agree, that is a miss. Same for Alexander.

I look at this class, though, and I see a more than solid job of recruiting.

Robinson and Fuller were misses

Feb 5, 2013, 2:29 PM

Fuller was 50/50 on us and Va Tech. Visited Clemson and loved the place. Ended up at VT. Miss

Robinson was commited then not then so on and so forth but i still consider it a miss

Lawson maybe isnt a miss. we were in on him late and i dont know if we ever really stood a chance.

puhleeeeze fuller is going to play with his brother. you can do better than that.

Re: Robinson and Fuller were misses

Feb 5, 2013, 2:33 PM [ in reply to Robinson and Fuller were misses ]

I don't agree on Fuller. He's the fourth brother to go to VT. RN is supposedly choosing Ole Miss so he can play with his brother, too. In Fuller's case, I think it's four times as legit. He may have said 50/50 at one point, but I doubt it was ever that close.

Robinson was committed at UF first. Decommitted, committed here, then it got really weird. I don't think that was a miss. It was more of a steal followed by a turnover. ;)

Coot Coot Coot Coot Coot Coot Coot coot Coot! Idiot!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see how anyone can call Fuller a miss. The fact

Feb 5, 2013, 2:28 PM

that it was even close is a credit to our coaches. His entire family is VT and I don't think many people expected him to ultimately go anywhere else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yup i don't consider him a miss..........

Feb 5, 2013, 2:41 PM

robinson I do
RN i do
Lawson?....eh?....if pushed prolly not, but we did "lead" after our visit
clark miss
adams miss
alexander (if we don't get him will be a miss)
crowder (if something odd happens he'd be considered a miss)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure about Nkemdiche either. It was clear that both

Feb 5, 2013, 3:56 PM

his mother and his brother were pushing him heavily to Ole Miss. Not sure what Dabo could have done differently there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll give you Robinson and Adams (if it's Auburn)

Feb 5, 2013, 4:00 PM [ in reply to yup i don't consider him a miss.......... ]

and if Crowder goes somewhere else, I'll agree as well. Can't agree on any of the others. No one knows what Alexander is doing or who leads, and that has been pretty consistent since day 1.

empty handed a good bit. when you are an elite angler, you don't always win the tourney. when you have the most talent of anyone in your sport,on your team, you don't win every game/every title. when you are an elite recruiter, you don't always get everyone you want. yes, dabo and our staff are elite, amongst the best in the nation, without a doubt in my mind.

Re: Is Dabo and staff elite recruiters/closers or not?

Feb 5, 2013, 3:50 PM

They are good...very good in fact.

However, they are up against SEC programs right and left, and that's a tough thing to work against considering how horrible the ACC usually is. We also have national programs like Ohio State, USC and UCLA coming into the southeast, and those are just more programs to have to work against.

I think given the conference situation they do a great job to get as many of these 5 star guys on campus as they do.

I'd also add we can't even touch JUCO prospects, and others are filtered by the AARC. Again, more hurdles to overcome.

Dabo's staff isn't completely immune to criticism. I think we generally undersign and take too many players that shouldn't even be considered. However, by and large they are doing a good job.

allinorange, in your career, have you had a few set backs that were not pleasant but did not determine the overall excellence of your career? If your answer is "No", then you are one of a kind and maybe we need you as our AD, Head coach, and President! I certainly hope that you are not involved in the sales field because with the attitude you are expressing here, you would be a complete failure!
