iPads today...Cars tomorrow...

Aug 9, 2013, 10:04 AM

oh wait...Didn't Herschel Walker have a new Trans Am when he played for UGA?

Seriously though - I can't see a lot of difference on where to draw the line. Giving / providing someone an iPad is a benefit outside of sports IMO. I'm happy they have them and I'm sure they are intended to help our players improve by watching film more easily. But - a car could help them too. This just opens a floodgate for the NCAA to have fun with IMO.

Meh.

They already keep a pretty close eye on this kind of thing. Several teams had iPads last year, even. I know that the new medical graduate program Clemson started in downtown Greenville provides all their students with laptops AND iPads. That's a benefit outside of school. The NCAA will keep the line drawn somewhere; don't you worry.

I'm a teacher and all of my students have iPads. I am assuming that these are the property o the university/state and are provided to them for use as a tool and are returned after the season or semester, w/e. There is a huge diff b/t an iPad and a car. First off a car is a 15k $ piece of heavy machinery that is frequently involved in crime and injury/death.

At my school the iPads cannot leave campus and are equipped with locators just in case. A booster might get away with buying and giving a car to a player cuz it's done on the DL but 150 state owned iPads have a paper trail from Clemson to Chucktown and back again.

I can't think of any organization that would not want their team(s) to have the most up to date technology. (in order to stay competitive)

* unless they couldn't afford it. (in which case you probably don't want to work for that organization any way)

Obviously, there are NCAA regulations to consider in this instance.
Clemson University and the athletic department seem to be doing their due diligence to discover the rules and abide by them...

iPads are a lot cheaper than books and a lot of schools are going that route, it is the future. At the hospital where I work, Pharm Ds and residents were initially using Miitubishi pads, one by one they started using iPads. When our main system and it's elaborate bridgework goes down, it's usually an a stupid IE issue. Hell, sent my stepson to rehab at the Pavillon in NC and he was issued an iPad mini. He pawned it for more drug money.

Ipads are cheaper than a collection of books, they hold more information and they are lighter. (so you don't have to carry around a book bag with a bunch of heavy books on your back all over campus)

I think all Universities will be forced to offer them to all of their students, (just to get people to enroll) or they will run the risk of no longer being a worthwhile endeavor. (due to technological innovation)

A lot of universities are starting to "give" them to all...

Aug 9, 2013, 10:37 AM

...students during freshman orientation (by give - it's part of tuition fees). I believe Clemson does this already (and please correct me if I'm wrong). So they're not getting anything the university isn't offering other students.

yes... there is usually a "technology fee" that covers the iPad/Laptop... nothing is for free. i would imagine that Clemson's isn't giving the iPads but loaning them out. the only problem i see however is if they have a wireless service that they can use w/ email/safari, it could be considered a benefit. but i sure this was looked into by compliance.

No, Clemson doesn't do that.***

There's something in these hills.

I have no confirmation of this, but I imagine these ipads

are Clemson Athletic Department property, not the individual players' property, and are merely "loaners" checked out for the semester (season), much like other students are able to check out "loaner" laptops through the library. Just me 2 cents...
