Iowa State Schedule/Results.....

Starting to look at our upcoming bowl game opponent.... Familiar with their coach, QB & RB from seeing them last year.
Northern Iowa (w. 16-10)....looks like they got out of the gate slow. Iowa (L. 27-17)....home loss to their ranked rival. at UNLV (w. 48-3)....offense warming up. at Baylor (L. 31-29)...close road loss to eventual conference champ and top 10 team. Kansas (w. 59-7)...nice recovery after the loss at Baylor. at Kansas St. (w. 33-20)....solid conference road win. Oklahoma St. (w. 34-31)....big home conference win over a ranked team. at West Virginia (L. 38-31)...head scratcher here, broke a 3 game win streak. Texas (w. 30-7)....home blowout of Texas. at Texas Tech (L. 41-38)...another close road loss. at Oklahoma (L. 28-21)...4th road loss of the year. TCU (w. 48-14)...Again, with the "rebound" home blowout to end the season.
A few observations....
- The Cyclones were strong at home, picking up a big win over Oklahoma State and blowing out the likes of Kansas, Texas & TCU. On the contrary, they tend to lose on the road.
- They lost some close ones....doesn't look like they were blown out at any point, although I did not study any of these scores in detail.
- Their RB Hall had some HUGE games. We're talking 242 yards against TCU, 190 yards against Baylor, 197 against K.State....their were other games where he was in the 50 or 60 yard range though. Too bad he's not playing in the game.
- With the talent they had at QB & RB & a leading receiver back, as well as a TE that won the Campbell Trophy...I'm sure they weren't expecting to go 7-5 this year. This team won the Fiesta Bowl last season over Oregon. Their 7-5 probably feels a bit like our 9-3.
In any case, I expect we'll probably have a stronger defense than anyone that they saw in the Big 12...perhaps Oklahoma State and Iowa were the closest they would have seen to what we have. Offensively, well...we should be able to move the ball on them, but we've thought that most weeks. Their kicker made most of his kicks, according to the stats.
This will be a close one...on paper it seems. Feels like a 24-20 sort of game. Depends on which team is more enamored with Disney and all that stuff, I reckon.

My hope is we run away with this game doing the unexpected on offense & defense. I hope we are anything but predictable but we are very balanced overall.
Let’s go Tigers! 36-17

A balanced offense would be a pleasant surprise.

Without knowing a single thing about the Cyclones, I'd venture to say where you find a RB with a bunch of yards over the course of a season, you'll find a team full of players who know how to block. Where you find a team full of blockers, you'll find another RB ready to carry the ball for a bunch of yards when the first RB is no longer there.

Breece Hall, our RB who was 10th in Heisman voting, declared for the draft and is not playing. That should make your guys feel better about the game. Our back up is good but limited carries due to Breece being the player that he is. Largely, our OL has actually struggled greatly as the season has gone on, especially in pass pro. This really terrifies me for this game. The WV loss was largely due to some of the worst officiating you will ever see. The Tech loss was just mindblowing and weird and we didn't deserve to win. Pass pro cost us the game in Norman but were in the redzone to tie it at the end of the game. If we would of had our place kicker do the punting sooner in the year, we would of beat Baylor. Lots of close losses and what if's. It was overall just a strange year.

Thanks for sharing that background…Hall certainly is an excellent RB that you will miss. I’m sure his backup will be ready for the opportunity. We had multiple injuries and transfers at RB position throughout this year….but it looks like our main guys will be healthy for the bowl. Sounds like your WV loss was similar to our NCSU loss. Condolences. Looking forward to the matchup.

^^This^^
RB’s can’t do much without good blocking. Good blocking can make average RB’s look like all-Americans.

appears they must have started reading their own press clippings after that one. That is the only way to explain a loss to West Virginia that immediately followed. Tommy Bowdening, if you will.

This is possible. If he did very little, it would likely be moreso due to our very crappy OL.

I've never really watched ISU, but they are one of my favorite teams with respect to colors, uniforms, and mascot.
