Interesting tweet -Todd Shanesy of the Spartanburg Herald

Dec 10, 2021, 10:51 AM

Journal:

"Hot take from someone who has admittedly only been on the Clemson beat and somewhat close to the program for two years: Tony Elliott would be a better head coach than Brent Venables."

https://twitter.com/ToddShanesySHJ/status/1469320898897448967

I wonder what would make him say that. I get that being a coordinator and being a head coach requires completely different skillsets, but I wonder why he'd think Venables wouldn't offer as much as TE.

probably based on demeanor… TE seems like he’s fit to be a CEO, while BV

Dec 10, 2021, 10:53 AM

is more hands on… That doesn’t mean BV won’t be great though.

Yeah... little Nicky is hands on and emotional.... I'd say that he's a pretty good coach right??

BV being too emotional

Where as TE is calm and collected? That's all I got.

Could be concerns about Coach V letting go/taking a step back from intensive, hands on defensive gameplanning and becoming more of a delegator?

That's always been an interesting dynamic to me when it comes to a coordinator becoming a head coach. You hire someone like BV largely because of how great of a DC he is. He can likely still be largely involved in the defense as a head coach but there's no way he can devote nearly as much time into defensive gameplanning as a head coach the way he could as a DC. Basically, you take a risk in the guy giving up part of what made him great whenever he becomes a head coach.

I kinda get that... He'll surround himself with the best possible coaches/recruiters for the long term and develop them... I feel BV, as good of a defensive coach as he is, will be more of bottle rocket coach... See Gene Chizik and Ed Orgeron... Not trying to take anything away from Coach V. I am glad he stayed at Clemson as long as he did and we are going to miss him on the sidelines. Go Tigers!!!

I don't disagree. However, defensive coaches seem to be *better* than offensive coaches on average IMO. However the transcendent coaches tend to be offensive.

I think it all comes down to big the big picture "CEO" type approach by Elliot. BV is a all-in-the-moment. He is in fact, the fastest "adapter" we have seen from a coach. He is (and I hate to say this) a Spurrier-type HC. Lethally tactical genius that keeps going at weak spots and does not relent. Elliot is something else and has the right skill-set to become a transcendent coach.

Both will be HOF head coaches. But combine Tony's long-range thinking and I would bet he is slightly better a recruiting a team compared to positions. My question for TE is this - Dabo and BV kids don't quit. TE is remove from them a little bit. How would a TE team respond from a leadership spot being 18 points down and the wheel coming off (Maryland 2011) or the NC game in 2017. We don't know if he can, as a HC, keep the team focused emotionally or if they have a Bowden quit moment. That is TE's unknown. (BV's unknown is if he can let his coaches coach)

I'm not sure how you can guarantee they are even going to be successful. They both could be fired after 3 years. Just because you were a great assistant means nothing as a head coach.

Wut? I can't think of a single NC winning coordinator to HC that was fired in 3y going back a good 20 years without some other issue flaring up like money bags or NCAA attention from previous coaching dealings.

GO back and look at coordinators that won a NC (let alone two) and became HCs. Ignore the Bama mill if you want to take out the Saban effect. The least successful have been Charlie Strong (Florida) and Pruitt (FSU) - and even then that can be put on dysfunctional programs too. The rest are successful to exceedingly successful. Even the "burn outs" like Chizik still won a title. Perhaps the worst result would be Chow (USC) at Hawaii (tough gig) but much of that success also went to Lane Kiffin (passing game coordinator). Even guys like Mullin were successful... even if Florida can't find a tree in the forest.

I agree 10000%

Brent is a "get your hands dirty ---- in the trenches" guy. Not an administrator or CEO type. Tony is an engineer by education, cerebral and would make an excellent detailed oriented CEO.

A great coach doesn't even need to know how to do everyones job or even be a former player. He just needs to know how to find the right people and make sure they are doing their job. It's just basic management.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd go even further and say TE will be a much better head

Dec 10, 2021, 11:45 AM

coach than OC. IN fact, he's probably better suited to be an HC...find himself a good OC, DC and go from there. I honestly hope that he goes somewhere and has enough success that he a clear candidate to succeed Dabo when that time comes around

I would agree to an extent. When I think of BV being a HC I think of others that he's similar to but it didn't transition over well for them. First that comes to mind is Muschamp, second, would be Bud Foster who didn't get the chance to begin with that am I aware of. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am curious to see how BV handles the transition from worrying about one side of the ball to the entire team. One good thing going for BV is he's had an excellent mentor for nearly 10 years to watch and take notes from. How crazy is it BV has been so fortunate to have been brought along by such well respected coaches...Snyder, Stoops and Swinney! Best of luck to BV unless they're playing the TIGERS!

Venables really did luck out. Stoops loves that school so much I think he will do anything he can to help him.
