Can we all just agree that Bakich is better?

May 7, 2023, 7:28 PM

Still a lot of ball left to play but we will surpass the win total from last year with a majority of the same players as we had last year. As much as people said its the talent because they didn't want to speak poorly of a coach... it was not talent.. it was coaching plain and simple. See was awful as pitching coach and the overall development of the pitchers was non existent. There was no improvement from the start of the year to the end. LeCroy may have been with the program a long time but he was no longer any good at developing hitters. In one year under the current staff the team is night and day different... and I say that if we don't win another game. Agree or disagree the results and eye test speak for themselves.

Roger That! Pitching was dismal at the beginning of the year. But slowly and gradually, Coach Belanger has shown that our pitching staff actually has some potential, and should continue to get better in the future. Impressive development of our pitchers--hopefully, recruits will also notice this progressive development of our pitching staff.

Today more than ever, coaching STAFFS determine the

overall success of a Head Coach, almost as much as the Head Man himself. A lot of the Head Coach's time is taken up with PR stuff these days, even live "in-game" interviews are a thing now.

I agree 100% about Coach Belanger, a great hire. The difference in our pitchers from early to now is staggering. I also like the different approach to hitting. We seemed to be trying to air condition DKS with every swing under Monte Lee. Coach Bakich has awakened the guys to the fact that singles, and even productive outs, can win games as well.

I wish the post season started right now, this team is hot as a team can get, hope we can keep that edge going for awhile.

The team has improved as the year progressed. It's noticeable on offense, but even more so with our pitching. Defense has been steady. That hasn't happened so much in the past few years.

The hitting philosophy seems to have changed to be about putting the ball in play rather than looking for the free 90 or gearing swings to the long ball. College players don't need to be worrying about the launch angle. Going to the plate looking for a base on balls will produce a lot of needless strikeouts. They put the ball in play and make the defense make plays. Tip your hat when they do make a play, but good things will eventually happen when you're the aggressor.

Energy and action on the basepaths is disrupting opposing pitching while putting men in scoring position. Yes, we run into outs sometimes, but we're gaining a lot of scoring opportunities in my estimation.

I like what I'm seeing so far and after a 48 game sample, I'd have to say the answer to your question is 'yes'.

What does a baseball coach do other than fill out the lineup card? I was not a big Monte Lee fan but to pin our improvement on a coach and not at least partly on the maturity and growth of the players, especially the pitchers is just wrong. I think the mental approach appears to be better this year and that helps with the confidence and we can certainly credit Bakich and even Jack with that. The NCAA is a done deal unless we just collapse so now we need to break the slump in the ACC and win our pod for a change.

I won’t say that yet as much I would like to. I just remember Monte winning the ACC tournament his first year and we looked like we were playing more loose and having fun. Then we know the rest of the story. I want to wait and see how we do over the next three years to make that call.

Inheriting Seth Beer helped Monte in season #1 … along with

3

May 7, 2023, 9:29 PM

Chris Okey, Charlie Barnes and several others.

Still, we were fighting desperately for a spot in the ACC tournament right up to the very last game of the regular season when we literally had to sweep Notre Dame n South Bend or get left out of the ACC field and certainly out of the NCAAs as well.

Winning that ACC Tournament was sort of a minor miracle, but we just somehow managed to put it all together at the right time.

Good post. To be clear you mean inheriting Beer as he was already committed as a recruit. Wasn't on Leggett's last team like the other guys you listed. Sad that we also had Cal Raleigh committed to Leggett but he backed off after the coaching change. Raleigh with Beer would have been awesome.

I would say it is clear we will be better under Bakich and he already had a far superior resume thran Lee before coming here. His post season accomplishments far exceeded Monte's.

But I would also agree with another poster that we need to see the season play out before we get too crazy about it. Looking great right now though. I'm excited about where we are going.

We obviously look better this year but a HC can’t be judged on 3/4 of one season. I believe he will be great for Clemson but has to prove it over several seasons as building a program and sustaining it I’d different than game day coaching

Now we are seeing the dividends on the diamond from the CEB hire. He's getting the most out of the existing talent and brought in some great guys who fit his style. As others have said, we'll have to see where things lead over the next couple of years but early assessment is Neff made a great hire.
