Informative article on early departure for NFL draft - CBS

Approximately 100 college players will leave school early, declaring for the draft as of Monday's deadline, according to a list assembled by NFL.com. While the official number won't be released by the NFL until Friday, that's at least close to the record 98 underclassmen that entered two years ago.
That's also close to disaster for some of those prospects -- many three years out of high school -- who are turning pro with collegiate eligibility remaining.
“You'll be able to negotiate a second contract sooner [by coming out early],” explained NFL personnel guru Gil Brandt. “But a lot of them don't get to negotiate a second contract.”
That's because 100 underclassmen are way more than the system can absorb. Slightly more than 18 months ago, out of the record 98 underclassmen who declared early for the draft in 2014, another record of 36 did not get selected. That's a failure rate of nearly 40 percent.
Only 256 total players are drafted (not counting supplemental picks) each year. It would be unheard of for 100 of those 256 (39 percent) to be underclassmen.
We're looking, then, at record unemployment, even if many sign short-term undrafted free agent deals to work out for teams in training camp. Draftees must make an NFL roster and play for three consecutive seasons to get to that second contract. That's slightly more than the average NFL career, 4.74 years.

Makes sense when CBS states it but when Tiger fans dare question why some left, we are haters and traitors...it's sad that these young men are so misinformed by people that know better, to jump to the NFL, it's criminal.

No it's sad that you try to live vicariously through these young men's decision and predict their failure before they have a chance to succeed.
Who's to say that next year is beneficial anyway. It's a 50-50 chance, and these young men are picking the one where they can get paid legally.
you're right, it is sad

I completely agree with you that the decision lies 100% with each individual and many times there are extenuating circumstances that we have no clue about that lead these kids to declare early.
The one caveat I will throw out there to the argument that there is no telling if a kid will be able to improve his draft stock by coming back to school is that, at least (most times), the kid will be getting a degree to fall back on.
I also see the side that says "what if they end up getting hurt?" and that's why I think it should always be in the players hands.
Basically, fans are selfish and want the kids back in school to help the team and the kid is looking out for the best interest of himself and family. Therefore, there is no true RIGHT answer.
HTH. Clear as mud.

Dodd, Shaq, and Mac are projected 1st rounders - they'll

make more $$ in signing bonuses than many of us will make in our entire lives. No question they should go.
It seems that Kearse has fallen a bit. He has NFLers in his family though - you've got to assume he's getting good advice from them. Maybe if he had stayed, he could have earned 1st round money next season. Maybe not. I guess if you can get paid to better learn your position - go for it.
I've seen Green projected as a 4th rounder. He's definitely still learning to play defense. He has the most to lose by leaving early.
Of course, no one really knows their financial situations. Also, some kids aren't made for college - they want to move on as soon as they can...

are doing good in the NFL. Bryant and Breeland say hi. Also, 4 out of the 5 players leaving early this year will be drafted in the first two rounds. At this point TJ Green is the only early entrant from us, that doesn't have a high grade.

As I've said " if they're not talking about you, then you don't need to leave. Dodd made his case in the play offs. For the guys that flew under the radar , your likelihood of making it is slim to none. If you've graduated, then its no big deal. But if not. Your taking a gamble that could really hurt you you in the future. Not worth the gamble. GO TIGERS!!

Demarcus Robinson declared early? LOL! Someone email him applications to McDonald's and the other fast food joints.

The article is informative, but one sided.

I wish that some of the guys we are losing would stay. But I don't know that staying would significantly change their draft position or long term potential. More than 3,000 guys leave the college ranks every year. 256 get drafted. The odds are against every player. I hope the best for all of them.

I worry about what our boys do if they don't get drafted. They are family. I hope that they are getting advice from people who care about them and not their own self interest.

Coaches' Input

Are Dabo and the coaches allowed to counsel the players about the draft? If so, does anyone know how active a role our coaches take?
