In Defense Of "No Risk It, No Biscuit" Man (Long)

Dec 31, 2022, 1:10 PM

These are just a few thoughts and statistics I thought people should consider when discussing Wes Goodwin's first year as our DC. There were a lot of ups and downs with our defense last night that cannot be ignored, but I think Goodwin is catching a few strays from fans that he might not necessarily deserve. I truly believe Goodwin did an admirable job for a first year coordinator considering he was nothing but an analyst the year before. I'll be the first to admit that he is not without his flaws as we have seen firsthand during multiple games this season. His inability, or refusal, to make quick adjustments being chief among them. However, I look forward to next season with the hope that he is actively adjusting himself as well as the defense.

With that being said, I would like to quickly compare and contrast defensive statistics from his first season as DC with Brent Venables' first season as DC at Clemson in 2012. Using defensive stats obtained from ESPN and Sports Reference (CFB)

In 2012, BV's defense had: 87 TFL's, 34 sacks, 13 interceptions, 1 pick six, 40 PD's, 7 FF, 1 FR, 1 S&S.

In 2022, WG's defense had: 110 TFL's, 44 sacks, 13 interceptions, 2 pick six, 64 PD's, 10 FF, 8 FR, 0 S&S.

From a statistical standpoint, in my opinion, WG did a great job for a first time coordinator considering BV had spent the years prior to his 2012 debut as a co-DC and on the field coach at OU and WG had no such experience. WG either tied or surpassed his predecessor in 7/8 categories. I'll admit, it's not a 1:1 comparison as our 2022 team was able to 14 games unlike our 2012 team which played 13 games. However, I doubt one extra game would have allowed for 10 more sacks, 23 more TFLS, and etc.

Another thing that could be considered as making this comparison lopsided is roster and overall talent. It's a fair argument to note that our 2012 defense was not as talented as our 2022 defense from a recruiting standpoint, but the 2012 defense did have 12 players with stints, however brief, in the NFL. In my opinion, the 2022 defense has 10-14 players with the size and skill to make it to, and in, the NFL. So perhaps its too early for this comparison.

All of this unwanted two-cents is just to say this: I'm still a Wes Goodwin fan and forever a Clemson Tiger fan. I'm excited to see which players come back and what our team looks like next year. I'm not quite over this Wes Goodwin experiment yet, and I truly believe he can be a great DC!

I will note that I am moving closer and closer to being completely done with the Brandon Streeter experiment, but that's a post for another time!

How does the 2022 D compare to the 2021 D?

Dec 31, 2022, 1:14 PM

That would be a better comparison.

Fair Point!

In BV's final season as our DC, our 2021 defense posted these stats: 87 TFL's, 42 sacks, 53 PD's, 12 Interceptions, 1 pick six, 8 FF, 8 FR, 1 S&S.

WG beats or ties 7/8 categories again with relatively the same roster and starting line up.

I don’t think Goodwin is to blame this year. If we had an offense that was just decent we would be playing at 3:30 today.

I agree!

I saw him catch a few strays last night and in weeks prior. When talking about poor coaching and coaching adjustments I do not think he and Streeter should be mentioned in the same breath (no offense to Streeter).

This post was an odd way of saying it's not his fault...

I think your assessment of not making quick in game adjustments is dead on. Last night for example, 3 times Shipley went in motion as a receiver and 3 times Cade was sacked. In the post game comments Streeter says “he needs to go back and look at the film” or words to that effect. It should not take 3 times for something like that to happen in order to make an adjustment like putting Shipley on Beasley to block during pass plays. Both Streeter and Goodwin are young and inexperienced and lack the confidence in their own in game analysis of what is going in and blindly follow the game plan verbatim

I agree, Streeter and Goodwin both fail at making quick adjustments. The biggest difference in my eyes, however, is the fact that Streeter has been a true position coach far longer than Goodwin and he was our passing game coordinator prior to Tony Elliot's departure and Kyle Richardson's promotion. In addition to this, this is not his first stint as an OC. He has called played before, albeit at a way smaller school on a way smaller stage, but the experience should already be there. Goodwin can progress as a DC, I'm not as convinced with Streeter at OC...

Streeter cannot be an OC if he is not in touch with what's

Dec 31, 2022, 1:49 PM

going on in the game. How many times this year has he made comments that he was "not aware" of how many touches his top offensive weapons had, or how many passes had gone to which area(s) of the field. If he's not up to date on that, how the #### can he "coordinate" the offense?

I must say that IMO, the "Streeter Experiment" needs to be wrapped up, and the "conclusion" presented that it didn't work.

Conversely, I think the "Goodwin Experiment" should be extended for another year... with the caveat that this is only my opinion. I see a lot of room for improvement, but I also see some "baby steps" in the right direction.

The whole problem is the offense. When an offense can’t sustain drives and score it puts the D in a bad way!

My only issue with Weslicheck...

Dec 31, 2022, 2:34 PM

Is he needs to be a LOT more demanding..

I'm not saying get intense like BV(He's one of a kind in that regard)...

But challenge his Defense more...

But we didn’t need to hire someone with zero coordinator experience

Dec 31, 2022, 2:37 PM

and wait on them to learn on the job.

We have a lot of future NFL players on our defense. The correct hire would’ve been an experienced DC at the power 5 level who didn’t need to grow into the role like Goodwin has and is.

As one option, Clemson could have hired a retired NFL DC ... so many options are on the table at a program with success Dabo has facilitated.
