Why is everyone so up in arms over the transfer portal?

Don’t the athletes still have to sit out a year if they transfer unless they meet certain criteria (like medical reasons or pursuing a graduate degree)? How is this any different than before the “transfer portal”?
As far as I can see, it’s just a name and a place for schools to be able to see who is available for transfer. It helps the student because his name is officially out there, and it helps other schools’ coaches with visibility.
Until the NCAA actually allows athletes to play immediately without stipulation, I don’t really have an issue with the transfer portal.
Maybe I have this all wrong...
Edit: The only other major difference that I just thought of is that I don’t believe a student athlete has to ask for permission to leave a school as they were obligated to do before. But I never thought that was fair, so I’m fine with it.

This year there is no penalty. All transfers can play immediately. I think people are talking more about possible things to come.

While I agree that I may have to rethink my positioning if that becomes permanent going forward; nothing I’ve read said it’s actually going to happen.
I think the prospect of paying athletes is a much bigger game changer than letting kids transfer once to another school.

I'll temper this with "I could be wrong" myself. However, it's fast getting to the point that anyone can put their name in because their dog is sick and I need to transfer and they're being granted immediate access to play. Justin Fields being so high profile, brought light and essentially accelerated on the spot transfers... Imho. Theres been others. Josh Belk.
No problem in what you described or pursuing a grad degree which is what most of Clemson transfers have been.
Transfers are becoming common place without having to sit out. There has been talk of players unions, name payments etc. Also been in the works for several years on trying to set up a farm system ala baseball. All coupled together will destroy college football.

? They now require specific documentation attesting to that fact.
And personally, I think Justin Fields had every right to transfer. No kid should be scared for his well-being at an institution of higher learning.

Exactly why I tempered with an idk. Haven't kept up with the rules. Just what's been posted on here.
I have no problem with fields transfer. Used it merely because it became such a high profile situation. Used in reference that his and other cases are accelerating changes in cfb.
In and of itself a fella transferring isn't a huge issue. How long will it take before it turns into free agency, putting players on the inr and college turns into pro. ??? I hope not.

Fields issue was he went with his heart to the school he wanted to go to from childhood and then realized oh no this offense does not work for my skill set.
He should have committed to OSU right out of the gate.

Also he couldn't accept that Kirby Smart didn't name him starter right away like Trevor at Clemson ( well almost right away) He felt like all he had to do at Georgia is show up. Remember he has been in Trevor's shadow since middle school.

Do you seriously think Justin fields feared for his life in Georgia? If you really believe that you need some help.

He wanted to transfer and wanted immediate eligibility so they pulled the race card.
Supposedly someone on the baseball team used the “n” word, But Justin fields did not hear it. He heard about it secondhand after the fact. So he says.
He grew up in Georgia. Do you think the first time he ever heard anything racist was when he got to college?

If you must know, I graduated from Clemson in ‘05 (per my handle). I am not in any of those groups you’ve accused me of being, nor do I particularly care much about politics in general. Either way, that has nothing to do with what was being discussed.

I tend to take people for their word and I’m reiterating the reasoning provided by the player and school. Your reasonings were all “conspiracy theorist” type statements. You have no idea what was going through Fields head just as much as I don’t either.
I’m not looking to argue, especially with someone as close minded as you.

You can get a waiver and play immediately. Most of these players are using all kinds of crazy excuses and being given immediate eligibility.

Coaching staff makes a commitment to the players.
Unless there are extenuating circumstances, I hate to see players leave. And also hate seeing other teams stock up via free agency.
