Bowl Games- Then and Now

Dec 31, 2021, 1:39 PM

Us old timers can remember when bowl games were a big deal. Prior to the late 50's and early 60's when more bowls were added, there were only 6 (Rose, Cotton, Orange, Sugar, Gator and Tangerine). Now, there are so many bowls that even teams with a losing record get invites. A bowl game is more like a 13th regular season game than a reward for an outstanding season.

Why so many bowl games? It's all about TV advertising revenues. One commercial after another every time there's a stoppage of play. That's why there are 4+ hour ballgames, like the Music City Bowl yesterday (4:19). It's virtually impossible for a game to have any rhythm or flow. Sad to see, but it's all about money.

I’m not going to complain about watching more football. Now get off my lawn!

I'm with you on watching more football...

It's just a shame we have to watch 2-3 hours of commercials along with every game!

Not going to argue about that. Plus having to have 10 different subscriptions to networks, Netflix, paramount , Hulu, Disney etc to watch shows we like. Even still get adds after you pay for a subscription! Ridiculous!

How many of you remember the rainy night at the Gator Bowl back in 1977 when we played Pitt? The stadium was full of Tiger fans and I will never forget walking out of our portal in the Upper Deck and seeing orange everywhere. We has so many fans there we could do the C-L-E-M-S-O-N chant all around the entire stadium. Our family has so many great memories from Tiger Bowls back when bowls were special and our children will always remember the trips which makes it even better.

I was there. Seems like it was just yesterday. Where did the time go?

I remember how hard it was to get bowl game tickets especially for Clemson. The luckiest I have ever been getting bowl tickets was for the 1981 NC game. My cousin new someone on the Orange Bowl Committee. We got tickets on the 35 yard line about 25 to 35 rows up. That was a great trip. It was a big deal being invited to the Gator Bowl. My Dad and Sister went to the 1979 Gator Bowl. He paid $200 for 1 ticket.

Now it’s embarrassing if you don’t go to a BG. In the 70’s and early 80’s there were approximately 21 BG’s now there are 44 BG’s this year. It meant a lot of you received a bowl game invite when Danny was there. I enjoy watching BG’s but some of them like the Bahama BG and The Jimmy Kimmel. Teams With losing records are now going to BG’s.

Original poster is correct. It’s all about the $$$$$! ESPN is a big reason there are so many BG’s. It use to be difficult to get a BG invite.

Congrats to Wake Forest for a great season and a BG win and a 12 win season!

I'm sure you meant the 1978 Gator Bowl vs OSU

with the Woody Hayes hit on Charlie Bauman that everyone saw but Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian calling the game. In 1979, we were in the frigid Peach Bowl freezing our tails off (I was there) while losing to Baylor. Those were some good times though. Sometimes seems like forever ago, sometimes seems like yesterday.

I was at the Peach Bowl in '79...

Coldest I've ever been at a football game... except for a Bears game at Soldier Field in Chicago... sleet... strong NE wind coming off Lake Michigan... Brrrr.

Yes my mistake. Thank you for letting me know. That was so long ago. But it seems like yesterday. I love Danny Ford’s reaction when Clemson intercepted Art’s pass. He was not sure how to react.

Great memory!

Yeah and that dilution of the bowls is a big part

Dec 31, 2021, 3:27 PM

of why many see them as meaningless exhibition games now and that is 100% the fault of the bowls and the NCAA, not the players.

I am a little disappointed in guys now opting out of the NY6 bowls like Pickett last night, but I just can't see why anyone should get upset with a guy skipping the Dukes Mayo Bowl.

Anyway, we are quickly reaching a point where only playoff games matter and everything else will be treated as a glorified scrimmage. The practices and the game will be a nice opportunity to get reps for the returning players and that's about it.
