I'm Retiring --- Again

Dec 3, 2019, 2:13 PM

I retired from my long time job on Feb. 28, 1986, from Fort/AIC Consultants in 1994 and will retire from Clemson Community Care (CCC) on Dec. 23, 2019. I suppose my tenure at CCC was a failure because I never received a promotion much less a penny in pay. Well, I suppose I should rephrase that statement. I had an opportunity to work with a group of wonderful people, something money can not buy.

I don't even remember when I started going down on Monday mornings to unload and sort food items. Time passes fast when one is having fun and I had lots of fun but something has happened, those ten and twenty pound boxes seemed to get heavier every day. I was beginning to wonder if I was getting old. Last year, just before Thanksgiving, we were unloading turkeys that had been donated to CCC. I picked up one that was pretty large and it seemed like someone must have stuffed it with lead. The tag indicated the turkey weighed 38 pounds. We have a normal sized oven in our home and a 15 pound turkey is about the largest I can get in the roaster pan and oven.

Walmart, Publix, local churches and individual donors are the largest contributors during the week, but food drives by various groups and organizations are instrumental in maintaining a sufficient supply of items for distribution to those in need.

Joe, you remind me of my grandmother on my moms side. Each week she would go to the local care facility to visit the "old people" from the church (back then it was a perfectly acceptable term). Turned out she was bu at least 5 years the oldest person in the church. She survived breast cancer and a mastectomy back in the 1920's and lived another very active 60 years
