I’m not sure how educated our fans are on the history of College Football…

Sep 12, 2021, 1:28 AM

But the ACC has NEVER been GREAT at college football. When the conference was created it was an above average Clemson team with Duke and Maryland (Yes…that Duke and Maryland). Then we added GT that hadn’t won a championship since before the ACC was founded (in 1952).

It wasn’t until FSU was added in 1992 that the ACC had a powerhouse program. And they TRIVED in the ACC (FSU and the 7 Dwarves should ring a bell). We made a shot at beefing up football by bringing in two powerhouse programs at the time in Miami and VT. They are just above average now.

We have NEVER been great. We will always be around the same level of the PAC12 and Big 12. All this talk about “we need out of the ACC! “ and “This conference is going to kill us” is just chicken littles. Not every conference is going to be the SEC or Big 10. The ACC has enough quality and traditional powers (FSU, MiamiVT Clemson) to stay relevant.

We’ve been in an average ACC for almost 70 years (and the Southern Conference before that). If it hasn’t trashed our program yet it won’t be happening anytime soon. If anything Clemson is better off now than we’ve ever been. The only way we get “left behind” is if a new division of football is created with the likes of OSU, Michigan, ND, Penn State, Texas, Bama, USC, Oregon, etc and we are not invited.

Right, and in the last decade the ACC has won 3 Championships FSU beat Auburn, Clemson beat Alabama twice, and lost one each to LSU and Alabama. Stay put in the ACC and the other teams will get better.

Clemson was bad in the early 1970’s, real bad 2-9, 3-6-2….. Red Parker and Charlie Pell recruited some players, then Danny Ford put it all together. If Danny stayed he would have had a 20+ year run.
Keep Dabo around and we could have a +30 year run like Danny, Bowden or Bear…..
Changing conferences does nothing to make Clemson better.

Changing conferences is about money, and Money will not fix the problems at Texas. They along with Texas A&M are always #1 and #2 with Athletic revenue, about TWICE Clemson’s revenue.
Changing to the SEC may have helped Texas A&M, but hiring a Championship ACC coach seems to have more impact.

Dominate the ACC until somebody else gets better, it worked for Bobby Bowden! If we win our games, we will get a shot at the playoffs, but lose two games and we are out!

We aren't playing under the rules that allowed FSU to dominate anymore. The ACC is at a historical bad!

From Clemson to thrive it must adapt to the times.

If the Playoffs expand to 12 teams Clemson will be fine in the ACC. If it stays at 4 teams and we continue to lose to top teams when it counts we become the Boise State of the ACC.

I don't want to leave the ACC but I don't want this league to drag us down either.

My memory of Clemson football is different than yours. It was actually Clemson and the 7 dwarfs. Danny had the team playing championship level football. Probation killed the momentum. When FSU joined the conference, the Noles did not take the Clemson game for granted. FSU fans understood that the Noles would have to beat Clemson in order to be ACC champions. The ACC has never been this down in football. It was not that many years ago that the ACC went undefeated with the SEC on rival Saturday. What has changed is the additions of the CFP and expensive football complexes. Schools are having to make the decision to invest in football. Remember Paul Johnson of Ga Tech complaining after his last game with Clemson? Paul stated that Ga Tech would have to invest in football if the team was to compete with Clemson. How many ACC teams have built football complexes? I know of Clemson and FSU. Are there others that I am not aware of? There will be fluke wins but, college football is turning into the haves and have nots. Time will tell what the NIL does to the current list of haves.

Check out the ACC standings over the years…

Sep 12, 2021, 7:25 AM

Yes the ACC is historically bad compared to the last 20-25 years (funny this has been our most successful run) but everything you hear about the 80s isn’t correct. There were multiple years the ACC champion didn’t finish in the top 10 or 15 and the rest of the teams finished unranked.

You see this in the 70s as well. In 79 there wasn’t a ranked ACC team at all.

BTW, multiple ACC teams are ranked this year and will be at the end of the year.

sixth best program in the nation through the 80s. And that would have been after probation.

Perennially elite, no. But it can't be said that we were "never great."

UNC has a nice one, I’ve been inside, however it’s 10 years old now so may be outdated.

What is educated?
What is our fans?
What is History?
What is College?
What is Football?
What is the ACC?
What is Duke? I thought it was a mayonnaise?
In all seriousness I wouldn't mind having Maryland back. At least they have some colorful uniforms.

This is true, outside of the 90s the ACC has not been that great. the 90s saw the addition of FSU, North Carolina was a top 10 team, Virginia was a top 25 team and Clemson was decent. Georgia Tech won the national championship, we all seem to forget, in 1990, and with FSU winning it in 93 and 99 that makes three national titles to ACC schools in that decade. Not bad….

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And that happened in the 2010s for the ACC, too.

Sep 12, 2021, 8:50 AM

In the far, distant past of 2 and a half years ago.

I’m assuming will be ranked around #5 today. As long as we continue scheduling well out of conference and continue winning at a high clip we’ll be fine. The expansion to 12 teams will just improve our odds of getting into the playoff overall.

When the ACC is ranked in polls like Sun Belt or AAC teams no matter their success, then it will be time to depart.

With the collection of teams its added the last few decades

Sep 12, 2021, 9:42 AM

it should be. But they ALL cycled down at the same time. FSU 3 nattys, Miami 5 nattys, VT played in a natty, GT a natty in 90 plus some older history. UNC has had flashes.

The odds that FSU, Miami, VT, and GT would be in the dumps, down cycles, at the same time was pretty slim but it happened. Bowden and Beamer got old. GT went through style changes. UNC lost Brown then got him Back.
