From my time as a football manager at Clemson, your coaching buddy is right on. For some top recruits the light comes on early and bright, some never see the field because they can't adapt. While performance in practice may not be a total indicator, if they can't handle stuff in practice, it may be the only indicator. Mop-up duty against a team who knows they are beat may not be. That's why coaches make the big bucks. As Frank Howard used to say "the best player on the team to the fans is the second-string QB" (in this case -the 3rd String).

ly do they forget our thrashing and Oklahoma's thrashing of Ohio State. We will see if Penn State is the the team this Sat., if they get beat by OSU, then big ten goes down below SEC and ACC is best conference again. Wisconsin has not played any mentioning team yet.

You lost the best player in school history in Watson, the guy that set the single season rushing record in Gallman, the guy that set the school record in receptions in Artavis Scott, the leading receiving tight end in school history in Leggett, a first round draft pick at wide receiver in Williams and a three year starter at center. Did you think they offense would not miss a beat?

Re: Plyler's Blog: Friday Email Bag

I too remember Coach Frank Howard's days. I remember people complaining about Charley Bussey not starting over Don King; Harvey White not starting as a sophomore over senior Bill Barbary; and then Lowndes Shingler not starting ahead of White. This old broken record has been played many times by Clemson fans, and it will continue to be played forever.

Why do we have to "take what the defense gives us?"

Oct 27, 2017, 3:47 PM

Why can't we ever dictate what we want to do? We have outstanding players.

Do you think the offense has underwhelmed up to this point?

Oct 27, 2017, 3:59 PM

Or do you think we are right where we need it to be to compete?

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the QBs have almost no leash outside of the gameplan

Oct 27, 2017, 4:24 PM

so the quick answer is underwhelmed compared to what it could do, because it is a QB centric/driven system.

Turnovers were a huge issue coming into the season. We still have a defense that can minimize the impact of turnovers, but don't have the dude at QB that can make the bad go bye bye through sheer will, inspiration and play.

Coaches have a tendency to reel things in when they're trying to work through or around issues, minimize mistakes through play calling, etc. A firm grip and not putting players in position to fail. It seems that's how they play call, coach offense in tight games.

It seems to me right now Clemson would have a hard time scoring with some teams we've played in the past.

Re: Do you think the offense has underwhelmed up to this point?

Oct 27, 2017, 4:25 PM [ in reply to Do you think the offense has underwhelmed up to this point? ]

With this many new faces inkey places, I expected the offense to struggle at times and the overall production to be down. I was pleasantly surprised by Bryant and his ability to throw the ball better than I expected. The offense did not look great last game but I chalk that up to the injury with the most important player. But how many teams can lose their best player and not have a drop off? Stanford did not play Love last night and had 222 total yards and 15 points. FSU, Michigan, Florida are examples of losing a QB and struggling. If Bryant is healthy Clemson’s offense is fine. If not, then it might struggle again. They have had to feature the running game more because of his skill set. When Cooper, Johnson, Brice or Lawrence take over the offense will based more around their skill set.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's played well, but Clemson's offense is designed to be

Oct 27, 2017, 4:41 PM

balanced, making it impossible to load up against the pass or the run.

KB2 has played fine, I don't believe he can win a game with his arm and that makes a balance by design offense, imbalanced and that's not good.

Is it an unreasonable expectation to throw for more than 5

TDs in 6 games at a school renowned for it's WRs?

Re: Is it an unreasonable expectation to throw for more than 5

Oct 27, 2017, 4:55 PM

Would you expect Clemson to be tenth in the country in rushing touchdowns? This offense is different than the last two years. Watson’s strength was passing and was a first round pick as a result. Bryant is more of a runner and as a result Clemson’s offense has improved running. Half full or half empty. With the past Clemson as been able to get a ton of great WRs but struggled to sign five star RB. UGA can’t sign five star WR but loads up on RB. The offense will look different after Bryant. In two years when the next QB takes over people will ask what happened to the running game and why has it dropped off.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey Tommy Bowden, can you stop deflecting and stick to

Oct 27, 2017, 5:10 PM [ in reply to Is it an unreasonable expectation to throw for more than 5 ]

Clemson? I don't care if UGA struggles to sign WRs or Florida lost their QB...I care about Clemson not being able to complete passes down the field vs Playoff teams...Knowing everybody else has problems toodoesn't make me feel any better about the lack of a passing game

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hey Tommy Bowden, can you stop deflecting and stick to

Oct 27, 2017, 5:16 PM

This is all relative. Clemson is not going to be the best in the country at every position every year. It is important to pay attention to everything going on around you. Comparing to the competition is not being Bowden. It is a refernce pout to how difficult it is. Clemson is playing with five returning starters on offense. They lost six of the best players at their positions in school history. Four of them left school early. This team is different. When Lawrence gets here people will ##### about the running game. The time last year people were complaining about Clemson’s offense even with Watson. If was three months ago some wanted to move Bryant to wide receiver of safety. How soon we forget. Where is the bitching about the defense at Syracuse?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the Defense hasn't underperformed all season, we have a LB

Oct 27, 2017, 5:36 PM

who is tied with our leading receiver(at WRU mind you) for TD passes over halfway into the season...What happened to We Too Deep? I could have sworn you said we were reloading at this point when talking about Depth this Spring....Maybe I misheard you

With a healthy Bryant yes. They were ranked two in the country and many people had them at number one. The key will will be the defense and a healthy Bryant.

I am headed out the door for a party now and can’t keep replying. But did you really think this offense would be close to last year’s in terms of passing touchdowns?

First of all, you didn't answer my question...Do you not see

question Mickey

Oct 27, 2017, 6:35 PM

I appreciate your trying to put “perspective” on this qb issue but do you think Fromm or Ehlinger were better practice players than the “starters” or more senior qbs? Are you saying HJ is not at these two players level?

I’m not trying to be overly factious (maybe a little) as I’m generally curious.

And for clarity, I don’t really buy this “coaches are never wrong” mindset being presented by all the “knowledgeable “, rational fans. I don’t claim that HJ is the better option - I just know he can’t be that much of a risk if KB goes down.

Re: question Mickey

Oct 28, 2017, 9:43 AM

Ehlinger has six touchdowns and four interceptions this season for,a,team that’s 3-4. I watched Texas score 10 points on a bad Oklahoma State defense last week and they lost the game in overtime due to his bad decision on the interception.

Fromm is better than Johnson. He is also blessed to have five star running backs and a great tight end to help. They don’t ask him to do a lot. He was 8 of 13 against Sanford, 9 of 12 against MSU, 7 of 15 against Tennessee, u of 11 against Vandy.

Johnson played Indiana high school football and adjusting to big-time college football was going to take some time. I think Johnson has a very high ceiling. He as a lot of tools. However, it just takes time for almost every quarterback coming into the game. Be patient. He is coming.

Finally, I have said many times that coaches make mistakes. They are not perfect either. But this staff has a lot equity with me. They know more than we do about players they are around everyday.
